CLEVELAND -- Today was sentencing day for the driver that struck and killed Kiara Rodriguez, 19, on Interstate 90 in July.

William Nichols, 65, of Willoughby Hills, was sentenced to 6 years in prison, given a $350 fine, had his driver's license suspended for the rest of his life, and was ordered to pay $8323.86 in restitution, mainly the funeral cost for Rodriguez.

On Jan. 15, Nichols pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to stop after an accident.

On July 20, Rodriguez, 19, and two of her friends were driving on I-90 when their vehicle got a flat tire.

Pulling over onto the berm, the driver, Rodriguez, got out after checking to make sure there was no traffic coming.

As soon as Rodriguez got out, Nichols struck her he drove by, throwing her body 30 feet in the air. Police administered a Breathalyzer test and Nichols blew a .116, over the .o8 limit.

The courtroom was was filled to capacity with family members from both sides and many were turned away. Through an interpreter, Rodriguez's parents spoke, as did her friend who was with her at the time of the accident.
