After a brutal winter, warm weather sounds like relief, but it can lead to severe flooding.

Many of us are looking forward to warmer temperatures, but the state is reminding Ohioans of potential problems.

Temperatures are rising this week, and the forecast shows the snow will turn to rain. But when rain falls and melts the snow already on the ground, it can lead to flooding. Even a small amount of rain can produce large amounts of runoff very quickly.

When water can't penetrate the frozen ground, it runs into lakes, streams and rivers, and causes the extra water to spill over the banks.

The state of Ohio suggests preparing for flooding. They say keep an eye on icy conditions, secure buildings in flood-prone areas, and have an escape plan.
