A vehicle-train collision kills one woman and sends another to hospital
CLINTON TOWNSHIP -- One woman is dead and another sustained seriously injuries after a train collided with their SUV.
The crash occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Sunday on Newkirk Rd. in Wayne County, just north of State Route 226 in Clinton Township.
Jennifer A. Phillips, 32, of Millersburg, was traveling southeast on Newkirk Rd. with a passenger, Raven Nicole Caskey, 31, of Millersburg.
Phillips drove a Chevrolet Trailblazer over tracks at a railroad crossing and then veered to the left side of the road. It is unknown how long the car was stopped prior to the crash.
The car was resting partially on the tracks and was struck by the train, traveling eastbound.
After being struck, the car spun around and came to a stop just south of the tracks.
Caskey was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wayne County Coroner.
Phillips was transported by Metro Life Flight to Akron City Hospital for serious injuries.
It is unknown if alcohol was a factor.
The crash remains under investigation.
