City officials hope to prevent drowning tragedies with awareness of free swimming lessons.

CLEVELAND -- The city of Cleveland Division of Recreation along with the Cleveland Metroparks have announced the 2014 Water Safety Initiative.

This means free swimming lessons are offered to Cleveland-area residents at the recreation centers.

Registration for indoor pool lessons started today. Here is more information from the City of Cleveland.

Indoor Pool Registration

June 2, 2014 -- Registration Begins

Week of June 16 -- Classes begin, and registration ends OR registration ends when classes fill. Space is limited. Sign up early.

Outdoor Pool Registration

Session I

Wed, June 18 -- Session I registration begins

Week of June 25 -- Outdoor classes begin, and registration ends OR registration ends when classes fill. Space is limited. Sign up early.

Session II

Wed, July 9 -- Session II registration begins

Week of July 16 -- Outdoor classes begin, and registration ends OR registration ends when classes fill. Space is limited. Sign up early.

For indoor pools all participants must be at least 4 feet tall and 8 years old.

For outdoor pools all participants must be at least 4 feet tall.
