SOLON -- The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the driver involved in the fatal crash Wednesday afternoon.

He is David G. Benning, 46, of Novelty.

The crash is still being investigated by the Solon Police Department with the assistance of the Southeast Area Law Enforcement Accident Investigation Unit and in collaboration with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's officer. It is unknown at this time whether the crash was caused by a medical issue or whether the driver's injuries from the crash caused the fatality.

Solon police released an official report this morning.

At 3:48 p.m. Wednesday, a cream-colored 2008 Ford Escape SUV, solely occupied by Benning, drove off the right side of the roadway on U.S. Route 422 eastbound, just east of the Liberty Road overpass.

The SUV continued off road, striking several small trees and then going over an embankment before coming to rest in a drainage culvert. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Solon Police and Solon Fire/Rescue medical personnel responded to the scene to find the driver apparently dead at the scene.

He was transferred directly to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

The right lane on U.S. 422 eastbound was closed between 3:48 p.m. and approximately 4:50 p.m. at which time all lanes of travel were temporarily re-opened to facilitate rush hour traffic.

Solon police say to expect the right lane to be closed temporarily over the next several hours for continued crash investigation and extrication of the vehicle.
