Seven officers have been assigned to the unit, taking the total from 20 to 27.
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland police are assigning seven additional officers to the department's Gang Unit allowing it to add a third gang squad.
The addition includes six officers and one sergeant. The new detail is effective Monday.
Currently the gang unit is made up of 18 detectives and two supervisors. This will bring the total to 24 detectives and three supervisors.
The primary focus of the Gang Unit is to proactively address gun violence through street enforcement, investigations and special initiatives.
The newly detailed officers come from five police districts and will undergo three days of investigative and tactical training before being deployed.
