WICKLIFFE -- Police here are looking for a man who tried to rob the Imperial Wine & Beverage store on Sunday.

Just before noon Sunday, police responded to a report of an attempted armed robbery. The incident occurred at Imperial Wine and Beverage at 30308 Euclid Avenue.

Police say the store owner was behind the counter when a man entered the store wearing a tan coat or sweatshirt with the hood up and a dark-colored ski mask. The suspect was armed with a black-handled steak knife. The store owner stepped into the back room to retrieve a handgun, and turned to point it at the suspect, who had chased after the owner and was now within arms' reach.

Police said the two struggled for the firearm, and the suspect dropped his knife on the floor at some point. The store owner and suspect both fell to the ground while wrestling for the gun. The owner feared for his safety as he felt the suspect trying to turn the gun in his direction. At one point, the store owner tried to fire the gun, but the revolver cylinder would not rotate and the gun did not discharge.

The two wrestled over the gun for about 30 seconds before the suspect jumped up and ran out.

The store owner chased him outside and saw him enter the front passenger door of a black or dark blue newer four door car. He obtained a possible partial license plate number of 2191.

The victim believes the license plate is an Ohio issued plate, but he lost his glasses in the struggle and is not certain of the plate number or state.

The main suspect and the vehicle driver are both believed to be white or Hispanic males. Officers recovered physical evidence at the scene and forensic testing will be conducted.

The store owner received minor cuts and abrasions to his hands, but was not seriously injured and no shots were fired during the incident.

Police are asking the public to see if they can identify the vehicle taken from a nearby gas station on surveillance video.

The suspect's black four door sedan can be seen as it drives westbound on Euclid Avenue.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Wickliffe Police Department at 440-943-1234.
