LORAIN -- HAZMAT teams and the Lorain Fire Department are on scene at Republic Steel after chemical fumes led to a plant evacuation.
The company, in a statement, said it notified the fire department after a chemical reaction in an area of the plant that is being prepared for expansion.
Republic says personnel in that area of the plant noticed unusual fumes while a contractor hired by the company was emptying tanks. Employees and contractors were evacuated. One person exposed to the fumes was treated at the scene.
The incident caused no damage to the plant or any interruption of its operations.
The company is located on East 28th Street.
A spokesman at the Lorain County Emergency Management Agency says a HAZMAT unit is on scene as well as the county's emergency mobile command unit.
