CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland office of the FBI announced the federal arrest of Erik Castillo.

According to the complaint affidavit, Erik Castillo, 33, admitted responsibility for the robberies at the CommStar Credit Union, 5609 West Erie Avenue in Lorain on Jan. 8; the Chase Bank robbery at 2232 Fairless Drive in Lorain Jan. 28; and the Kwik Mart robbery at 3155 Pearl Road in Lorain on Jan. 25.

At 2 a.m. Jan, 26, Castillo was arrested by the Lorain Police Department for the robbery of the Kwik Mart.

Castillo was identified by two Kwik Mart employees who recognized Castillo as a frequent customer and the brother of a Kwik Mart co-worker. Lorain Police Department officers located Castillo at a local business in Lorain.

The FBI and Lorain Police Department had been investigating the two bank robberies since their occurrence. FBI agents, in collaboration with Lorain Police Department detectives reviewed the interviews of Castillo that had been conducted and the corroborating evidence obtained. Investigators consulted with prosecutors and determined that federal charges should be filed.

A federal arrest warrant was obtained for Castillo, based on a complaint alleging violations of Hobbs Act and Bank robbery.

Today Castillo was transferred from local custody and placed into federal custody by FBI agents.

Castillo was scheduled for his initial appearance at 1:45 p.m. today before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Vecchiarelli.
