NEWTON FALLS, Ohio -- A Warren couple is accused of using a 14-year-old boy dressed as a Boy Scout to pull off a 'popcorn scam' last fall.

According to records in Newton Falls Municipal Court, Brian Billman, 33, and Christina Hill, 34, both of Warren, used her 14-year-old son to sell popcorn in the Lordstown area and other nearby communities in Trumbull County like Niles, Howland, Champion and Warren.

From October through December, they are alleged to have approached residents selling popcorn as a fundraiser for Troop 101 out of Warren.

They asked for cash payment upfront, then never delivered any popcorn. Lordstown police investigated and learned Troop 101 didn't have a popcorn fundraiser.

A case was filed Feb. 27 and warrants issued for their arrest on both felony and misdemeanor charges.

Both Billman and Hill were in court Monday morning. Billman's bail was set at $25,000 and his next hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday.

Hill pleaded not guilty and her next hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. April 10.

The son faces charges in Trumbull County Family Court.
