CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers have hired David Blatt to become the team's new head coach.

This was confirmed by the Priority Sports firm that represents Blatt.

The firm tweeted "Congratulations David Blatt, new head coach of the Cavs"

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and David Griffin, the Cavs General Manager, offered the job to Blatt after he interviewed with the team in Cleveland on Wednesday. Negotiations continued Thursday.

Negotiations went on throughout Thursday evening.

Blatt has spent all of his coaching career in Europe and Israel. He was the coach of the Russian Olympic basketball team that won a bronze medal in 2012.

He coached the Maccabi Tel Aviv team this past year to a European Championship. He resigned that job after the season to take a run at living out a lifelong dream of coaching in the NBA.

Blatt will become the team's 20th head coach. The Cavs are on their third coach in three years and own the No. 1 overall pick in next week's draft.

Media sources report Blatt agreed to a four-year deal that could be worth as much as $20 million.

He was born in 1959 in suburban Boston, Blatt grew up watching the Bill Russell-era Boston Celtics win 10 NBA championships in 11 seasons from 1959 to 1969.

Blatt played prep basketball at Framingham South High School and went on to play point guard at Princeton University from 1977 to 1981.

Blatt won a gold medal at the Maccabiah Games in Israel as a member of the U.S. national team.

He had a standing offer to become an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors on the staff of Steve Kerr.

Blatt postponed a decision on that job so he could interview with the Cavaliers for their head coaching position.

Blatt, 55, was a college basketball player at Princeton. He learned his style of basketball from his coach while at Princeton Pete Carril.

He is known as an offensive coach, who demands a great deal from his team. He is a vocal, flamboyant coach on the sideline during games. The Cavaliers have been looking for this style of coach after firing Mike Brown at the end of the 2013-2014 season.
