AKRON -- LeBron James has never forgotten where he came from nor the kids who face the same obstacles he did growing up.

The LeBron James Family Foundation continues to support the Akron community, including the schools and the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Despite going to Miami, that dedication to his hometown just keeps getting stronger.

LeBron James has come a long way from the shy kid who would sit in the back of the class and moved constantly with his mother, never staying for long in one place.

But along the way, teachers, coaches and people with big hearts changed his life.

In 2011, WKYC Education Reporter Kim Wheeler spoke with him at NBC's Education Nation Summit about his commitment to the schools.

"I grew up in the inner city too. I remember what it was like and I want to give back," said James.

The LeBron James Family Foundation does a lot for the children of Akron with his Wheels for Education program, providing students with computers, tutors and bikes. Kids are rewarded for good grades and attendance.

LeBron also encourages kids to take make a promise to stay in school, listen to teachers and parents.
