Even I couldn't make this stuff up. This is absolutely sad.

At 7:14 a.m. Friday, a 16-year-old boy at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut stabbed a 16-year-old girl in one of the hallways, reportedly because she refused to go to the prom with him. USA Today and the Connecticut Post are telling the story, as are Connecticut TV stations.

The girl, Maren Sanchez, was stabbed in the school hallway at 7:14 a.m. and died from injuries from the attack at 7:43 a.m. at Bridgeport Hospital.

The prom that was scheduled for Friday night has been postponed and will be rescheduled.

The school was put on lockdown just after the incident and then all the students were sent home on buses about 9 a.m.

According to police, a staff member witnessed at least a portion of the incident. Other witnesses say that he tried to strangle her and then threw her down a staircase before stabbing her in the throat.

The boy was taken into custody and arrested and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Juvenile Court in New Haven.

Social media like Twitter and Facebook started getting posts about 7:45 a.m., all naming both the boy and the girl.

In this day of "instant news," I can only say that the incident is horrific.

We all have to live with disappointment and rejection but it seems like many of the younger generation resort to violence -- either against themselves or against others -- when things don't go their way.

I'm not saying either is a good way to handle rejection but to me it appears that this level of aggression being displayed in recent school attacks is increasing.

Prayers for all involved.
