HARVEYSBURG, Ohio -- The mayor of a southwest Ohio village has been charged with sexual imposition involving a village employee.

The Warren County sheriff's office said Wednesday that Harveysburg Mayor Richard Verga, 75, was charged with the misdemeanor count after investigation of allegations by a female employee.

She alleged he touched her buttocks three times before a council meeting April 28, according to a police report.

Verga has denied wrongdoing. Verga did not return calls from WKYC for comment.

"Sexual Imposition requires more than just a he said-she said deal," said Warren County Sheriff Lt. Eric Johnson. "It can't be just one person's word versus another person's word. There has to be some sort of collaborating evidence, which we feel we have in this case."

Johnson said they launched their investigation on May 5.

The case stems from a complaint from Harveysburg Village Clerk Carol Nelson, who also serves as the clerk of courts. WKYC could not reach Nelson by phone.

Verga was asked by all six members of council Monday to take a leave of absence, pending the criminal investigation.

Verga refused.

Verga will be arraigned at 9:50 a.m. Thursday.

Harveysburg is a village of some 550 people, about 30 miles southeast of Dayton.
