The Sheriff's Office says Timothy A. Freeland, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene
ROOTSTOWN TOWNSHIP -- A Rootstown Township man is dead after he was struck by a train Wednesday morning.
The Portage County Sheriff's Office was called at 6:10 a.m. by Norfolk Souther Railroad Police who reported an Amtrak passenger train had struck a man who was walking along the tracks a quarter mile north of the Lynn Road crossing.
Timothy A. Freeland, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was reported that Freeland was walking with his back toward the train.
The train engineer reportedly told authorities he saw the man and blew the whistle to alert their approach.
The Portage County Sheriff's Office is working with railroad police from Norfolk Southern and Amtrak in the ongoing investigation.
