NAVARRE -- For hundreds of students at Fairless Elementary, today's school assembly was like any other. But for two of their fellow students, the assembly brought a surprise ending both had been hoping for since last May.

Eleven months ago, Skylar and Nathan Blumenauer's dad shipped out to serve his country in Afghanistan. Their father, Carl, is a petty officer in the U.S. Navy.

Since last May, Skylar and Nathan have only been able to talk to their dad on the phone or via webcam while he's been overseas.

But today, they could trade the phones and Skype for a real hug when -- much to their surprise -- their dad walked out into the gymnasium during the assembly.

Skylar and Nathan say they hope to get to ride bikes with their dad over the Easter weekend but say even if that doesn't happen they will just enjoy that for the first time in a long time they can say "He's home!"

A dad returning home from an 11-month tour of duty with the Navy overseas, surprises his son and daughter when he shows up at their school assembly.
