NEW FRANKLIN -- A fire Wednesday afternoon caused about $300,000 in damages to a lakefront home, but no one was injured, according to firefighters.

The New Franklin Fire Department was called at 4:09 p.m. to 243 South Bay Drive.

The homeowner was home at the time, reported the fire and was able to get out of the home, which is located on the Portage Lakes.

Firefighters arrived to find fire on the second floor and roof of the home.

The fire was under control at 4:54 p.m.

New Franklin firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the village of Clinton, Conventry Township and the city of Green.

The home contained no working smoke detectors, and the New Franklin Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors.

The Fire Department will be handing out smoke detectors to residents on May 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the main station at 5605 Manchester Road.

The detectors were purchased with funds from a $93,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency fire prevention grant.
