SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP -- Rescue and Dive teams have found the body of a 16-year-old missing swimmer.

Camden Cole disappeared Tuesday night in Springfield Lake in Summit County.

Rescue and dive teams spent hours on the lake searching.

Friends describe Camden as caring and carefree.

"You hear about his happening elsewhere but you never think it's someone you know and my heart goes out to the family. This is awful," said friend Madison Miller.

"He had a lot of friends a lot of people cared about him. He was a caring guy. Loved his friends too. It's sad. A lot of people lost a good friend," said friend Cody Carter.

Police say Camden and a friend were swimming toward a buoy when Camden got distressed and disappeared under the water.

Search and dive teams used sonar and dropped markers in a pattern to help find him.

At times, they say the visibility underwater was down to 8 inches.

"In speaking with the family, he was a very good swimmer. We don't know why he became distressed during this. That's obviously something we will look into further," said Sgt. Eric East, with the Springfield Township Police Department.

Swimming is prohibited from the public side of the lake because of the lack of lifeguards, but parents say it doesn't stop kids from jumping into the water from private docks.

"When it's hot in the summer, nobody has a pool in the area so they come and jump into the lake," said Christine Suzuki.

Camden's friends can't believe he's gone.

"I can't wrap my head around it. It's heartbreaking," said Carter.

Police say there hasn't been a drowning in Springfield Lake since 1983.

Lakeview Lighthouse Church in Akron will be open Wednesday to anyone who wants to talk with a counselor.
