AKRON -- John Wise, the man convicted of shooting and killing his wife as she lay in a hospital bed, has died in prison, his attorneys said.

Wise said he shot his debilitated wife out of love in August 2012 after she suffered aneurysms and appeared to be in pain at an Akron hospital. Mercy is not a defense to a murder charge in Ohio.

He had requested clemency and his attorneys were prepared for an Aug. 11 hearing, according to the statement the attorneys released.

The Ohio Parole Board agreed to a full board hearing on Wise's clemency application. His attorneys were in the process of preparing for the hearing.

The prosecutor's office recommended the reduced sentence that Wise was given. Prosecutors have said they would oppose any further reduction in the punishment.
