CUYAHOGA HEIGHTS -- Cuyahoga County's Mayors & City Managers Association has overwhelmingly endorsed Issue 7, the sin tax to continue the pennies per pack and per beer on cigarettes and alcohol.

The money would be used to fund sports stadium repairs.

The vote was 55 yes, 1 no and 1 abstention.

Moreland Hills Mayor Susan Renda believes sports franchises have economic benefits for both downtown and the entire county.

The group was previously briefed by Issue 7 supporters, who made the case that the tax is not an increase and is needed to maintain publicly owned buildings.

A planned protest by Issue 7 opponents fizzled when they mistakenly went to a different building than where the meeting was held.

On April 1, there's a Cleveland City Club debate on Issue 7 and the larger issue of relationships between cities and their pro sports teams.
