LAKE COUNTY -- The warmer weather is finally allowing construction crews to finish some much needed work on I-90 in Lake County.
It's part of our continuing coverage of a dangerous stretch of road that's had two multi-vehicle accidents during the holidays.
The rising temperatures are allowing construction workers to put in a section of a temporary shoulder so you can pull over safely.
The lanes are so narrow that pulling off to the side will get you stuck in the mud.
It happened Friday morning. A tow truck had to pull a semi tractor trailer out.
Drivers like Richard Turner avoid the area for that very reason.
"If you do fall off the road, you got no allowance, you'll roll the car over," said Turner.
To give drivers more room, ODOT installed a section of a temporary concrete shoulder on the eastbound side between state Route 44 and Vrooman Road.
Over the weekend, crews will prepare the road so they can paint the lines.
Some drivers say it's essential when it gets dark.
"If they would mark it a little bit better at night, especially with me coming from up north and not from the area, where the split was I wasn't too familiar with the exists," said driver Eric Williams.
ODOT says they had hoped to finish the project back in November but continuous snow Fall, starting as early as October, delayed the work.
After the multi vehicle accident Christmas Eve and another a week later, construction crews put up amber lights on top of the orange barrels to help drivers better see the road.
They also added two speed trailers, three portable message signs, and four additional 55 mph speed limit signs.
Drivers say the improvements couldn't come soon enough.
"It looks like it's going to be plenty wide when they're done so hopefully they're done soon," said driver John Youdath.
"Just fix it," chuckled Turner.
If you're driving in the area expect to take a detour.
On Saturday from crews will close the right lane on I-90 westbound between SR 528 and Vrooman Road from 7 a.m to 4 p.m.
During the work the I-90 westbound exit ramp to Vrooman will close.
On Monday, crews will close the right lane on I-90 westbound between SR 528 and Vrooman Road from 7 a.m to 3 p.m., weather permitting.
