The project will replace the bridge deck on I-77 to improve drainage between Interstate 480 and Grant Avenue
Drivers who use Interstate 77 to get into and out of the city will be taking a detour this weekend as the Ohio Department of Transportation moves ahead with work on a major bridge deck repair project that will be impacting north-south commuters.
The project will replace the bridge deck on I-77 in both directions to improve drainage between Interstate 480 and Grant Avenue over the Cuyahoga River, Granger Road, Canal Road and the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation. It's a two-year project.
This weekend ODOT crews will be closing down I-77 in BOTH directions beginning Friday and lasting throughout the weekend so that the first part of the traffic reconfiguration for the project can be implemented.
Weather permitting, work will begin on Friday at 7 p.m. All lanes on I-77 northbound and southbound will be closed between I-480 and state Route 21 until 6 a.m. Monday. Motorists will be detoured via state Route 176 and Interstate 490. All traffic leaving downtown Cleveland via I-77 southbound will be detoured via I-490 westbound to state Route 176 southbound.
Also during this weekend closure, crews will implement two ramp closures as part of phase one. On Friday at 7 p.m., the I-77 southbound ramp to I-480 westbound and the I-480 eastbound ramp to I-77 northbound will close until early November. I-77 southbound motorists will be detoured via I-490 westbound to state Route 176 southbound to I-480 westbound. I-480 eastbound motorists will be detoured via state Route 176 northbound to I-490 eastbound to I-77.
During construction three lanes in each direction on I-77 will be maintained on the bridge.
The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 50 mph during construction, and ODOT warns drivers this will be strictly enforced.
Drivers can also expect overnight lane closures in both directions on I-77 throughout the project.
Motorists are encouraged to visit the project's website and to sign-up for email updates for all up-to-date information about closures and restrictions.
