I don't need to remind you that Valentine's Day is Friday.

I wondered if there was anything "new" under the sun as far as gift-giving? Not really, apparently, but I did find this interesting "pitch" from Ebates.com and some of the gifts wanted aren't very personal.

I stumbled across their survey and was rather surprised to see that their survey was based on astrological Zodiac signs.

Huh? OK, so I took a look.

Apparently, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces want gift cards (36%), a Smartphone (11%), or an Xbox/Playstation (7%)

Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo want flowers (26%), jewelry (23%), or a TV (9%) and Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius want shoes (12%) or a Tablet (12%)

Libra, Aquarius, and Gemini want chocolate (29%), clothes (19%), or tools (6%).

The #1 item women want is flowers (41%).

Ebates.com found that the top item men want is a gift card to their favorite store (25%).

I just don't see how romantic it would be to get (or give) a gift card or a hammer or a Smartphone. I always thought the gift was to be something from the heart and romantic and not something that was expensive.

The last time I had a wonderful Valentine's Day was back in 1969 when I received a series of Valentine cards, mostly in the Peanuts comic characters genre. You see, I am all about the romance. I would rather sit and watch a movie cuddled up at home by the fireplace than go out for a fancy dinner.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like dinner at a nice restaurant but the gestures are supposed to be from the heart.

The worst Valentine's Day I ever had was back in 1970 when my then-boyfriend drunkenly took me to a "pot party" on campus. I almost immediately called another friend to come and get me. He arrived with an entourage and whisked me out of that dorm room.

Needless to say, that was the end of that boyfriend. (Looking back, he only wanted to date me to join my popular "crowd," which subsequently shunned him after that episode).

Sadly, I have looked forward to Valentine's Day each year since, hoping they would be better but they never were. Yes, I've been waiting 44 years for a decent Valentine's Day. Apparently, I have become used to being a lady-in-waiting. But some day, my luck will change.

Oh, and I'm a Capricorn and I do love flowers so at least that part of the survey seems to ring true. Hope you get your heart's desire this weekend.
