San Marcos, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Dann kicked a 41-yard field goal, his fourth of the night, with just four seconds remaining to give the Texas State Bobcats a 33-31 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars in a Sun Belt Conference shootout at Bobcat Stadium.
For the Bobcats (5-3, 2-2 SBC), Tyler Jones threw for 218 yards on 15-of-25 passing, with two touchdowns and an interception, while adding 68 yards rushing. Robert Lowe ran for 89 yards on 15 carries while Chris Nutall added 76 yards on 12 attempts. Isaiah Battle caught three balls for 62 yards to lead Texas State receivers, while Brandon Smith nabbed four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown.
Ross Metheny led the Jaguars (3-4, 1-2) with 300 yards passing, connecting on 27-of-43 with three touchdowns and an interception. Danny Woodson pulled in five passes for 118 yards and two scores, while Wes Saxton caught 10 passes for 89 yards. Chris Dinham led the Jaguar rushing attack with 50 yards on just four carries.
The Bobcats drew first blood, scoring on their first possession with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Ryan Carden, capping an eight-play, 62-yard drive. They added to their lead with a 68-yard scoring drive early in the second quarter when Jones found Smith for a 16-yard scoring strike that gave the squad a 14-0 lead with just 13 minutes to play in the half.
South Alabama finally got on the board with a 20-yard field goal late in the half and continued to cut into the deficit when Metheny scored on a three- yard rushing touchdown with 8:14 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bobcats added a 35-yard field goal by Dann in the final minute of the third to extend their lead to 17-10.
The fourth quarter saw a flurry of scoring, starting when Metheny connected with Ross on a 13-yard touchdown with just over 13 minutes to play in regulation.
A 37-yard field goal by Dann gave the Bobcats the lead back midway through the quarter and they extended that when Justin Iwuji intercepted a Metheny pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown to make the score 27-17.
Metheny bounced back and drove his team 75 yards in eight plays, capped off with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Woodson that cut the Bobcat lead to 27-24.
A 43-yard field goal by Dann with 2:22 remaining put the Bobcats up 30-24, but less than a minute later Metheny connected with Woodson for another big touchdown, this time a 43-yard scoring pass that gave the Jaguars the lead at 31-30 with 1:32 left in regulation.
Jones and the Bobcats moved the ball to the Jaguar 24 to set up Dann's game winner, converting a 4th-and-24 on the drive with a 51-yard pass to Ben Ijah which put the Bobcats in field goal range.
The Bobcats converted 8-of-17 third down while holding the Jaguars to just 4- of-13. Texas State also dominated time of possession, controlling the ball for more than 37 minutes.
