Northeast Ohio prep teams win soccer, volleyball state championships
Four area high school athletic teams earned championship hardware this weekend, as the Ohio High School Athletic Association volleyball state tournament and boys and girls soccer state championship matches were held in Dayton and Columbus, respectively.
The Revere High School varsity boys soccer team made history on Saturday afternoon when it won the OHSAA Division II state title. Revere (19-0-2) defeated Columbus Bishop Hartley 2-0 at Columbus Crew Stadium to win the program's first state title in its fourth championship match appearance.
Daniel Branch and Nolan Dyko netted goals for the Minutemen.
The Mentor High School (17-1-4) varsity boys soccer team lost to Mason (21-0-4) 1-0 in the Division I state title match.
The Rocky River High School varsity girls soccer team earned the program's first-ever state title on Friday afternoon when the Pirates (22-0-1) defeated Granville 3-1 in the OHSAA Division II championship match at Columbus Crew Stadium.
Grace Bennett and Abby Elinsky scored goals for the victorious Pirates.
The Walsh Jesuit High School varsity girls soccer team earned the program's seventh state title and second-consecutive championship on Friday night in the OHSAA Division I title match.
Sofia Rossi and Katie Quinn netted goals for the Warriors (20-0-3) in the team's 2-0- defeat of Mason.
The Hawken School (16-2-5) varsity girls soccer team lost to Hamilton Badin (15-4-4) 3-2 on penalty kicks in the Division III state title match.
Kat Zalar scored both of the Hawks' goals in regulation.
The Padua Franciscan High School varsity volleyball team defeated Kettering Archbishop Alter 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-21) in the OHSAA Division II volleyball state championship held on the campus of Wright State University on Saturday night.

The Gilmour Academy varsity volleyball team (22-7) lost to Versailles in five sets (26-24, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11) in the Division III state championship.
The Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School varsity volleyball team (23-6) lost to Maria Stein Marion Local in three sets (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) in the Division IV state championship.
