Browns quarterback battle begins Saturday at training camp
As we get ready for Browns training camp, there isn't a quarterback that will get more attention than Johnny Manziel. Meaning, I don't think there's an NFL quarterback with more pressure than Brian Hoyer.
Last week I would have said Tony Romo, but now that Brandon Weeden is next in line in Dallas, Tony can breathe easy.
This quarterback battle has become the great divide here in Cleveland and around the country. And it's really a question of 'Are you pro-Johnny Football or anti-Manziel?' "
Hoyer fans say he should no question be the starter, even with only four starts, seven touchdowns, six interceptions and 12 sacks. I hear, "Yeah, but he learned under Tom Brady."
Yes, but those aren't Brady-like numbers. I still think Hoyer is the better choice because I was never a fan of bringing Johnny Football here in the first place.
But is there pressure to start Manziel? What if Hoyer starts 0-2 -- or 0-3? The schedule doesn't help with Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Baltimore before the bye. How will fans react to the first interception, or how will ownership react when jersey sales slip because Manziel is not the starter?
The NFL is a business first. Hoyer can stay in the driver's seat by winning, but, with each loss, management's patience will be tested. Hoyer has all the pressure. How much of a chance will he truly get?
