SOCHI, RUSSIA -- Lorain native Kelly Gunther describes her first Olympic race as a "whirlwind."

2014 Winter Olympics: Coverage from Sochi

The long track speed skater competed in the women's 1,000m race on Thursday.

Gunther says she always dreamed of competing at the Olympic Games, so she was trying to take in the whole experience.

In many ways it was a victory for Gunther to be on the track at all. She came all the way back from a devastating ankle injury that nearly led to her losing her foot.

Gunther finished 33rd. No Americans won medals in the event.

Gunther says didn't finish the way she wanted in Sochi, but it's not her last shot at an Olympic medal.

She told WKYC's Sara Shookman, who is in Sochi covering the Olympics, she plans to get right back to training for 2018 after a short break.

Gunther is also a backup for the team race later this week, but she won't know if she'll compete until race day.
