While much of the eastern United States has received plenty of rain to avoid drought conditions, some parts of the western United States are experiencing severe drought conditions.

Drought won't stop fireworks in dry western states

According to the United States Drought Monitor report issued July 1st, 2014, there are at least 12 states dealing with some type of drought condition. Parts of California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas have areas with "exceptional" short term (less than 6 months) and long term (longer than 6 months) drought conditions.

For example, El Paso has only received 25% of its normal precipitation since January 1st, 2014. The lack of rain, allowed for warmer than normal temperatures for this location, with the city recording its second warmest June on record.

Los Angeles, California just set a 2-year climate record for the driest back to back rainy seasons with only 11.93 inches, 60% below normal.
