Parma teen sentenced for superimposing ex-girlfriend's head on nude body

An investigative report by Dave Summers
April 3, 2002

PARMA, Ohio -- An 18-year-old Parma man was sentenced to 30 days behind bars for superimposing a picture of his ex-girlfriend over the body of a nude woman and then posting the picture on the Internet.

Tim Podany being taken to court Tim Podany failed to appear in court Wednesday morning for his sentencing. A warrant was put out for his arrest and police picked him up at his home. He was convicted of telecommunications harassment in March.

Podany says he put the picture online because his ex-girlfriend, Annie Shanks, had her family harass him. She and Podany were schoolmates at Parma High School.

Shanks' mom says she thinks Podany was verbally abusive to her daughter and very possesive. She says it got worse when she ended the relationship.

"He's sick," said Christine Shanks, Annie's mom. "Actually, mentally ill to do something like that."

Tim Podany in court Podany took Shanks' yearbook photo and placed it on a picture of the body of a nude woman. He then put the picture on the free website Geocities in February with the words "This is the stupid b****! She is a liar and she cheated on me. So you see my anger."

Podany said he did it because he was mad and he wanted to seek revenge on her.

Detective Tom Conner of the Parma police says the Internet is the new avenue for harassment.

"You don't know how long this is going to go on or what photos are going to appear on the Internet next of this person," said Conner.

Podany said it wasn't going to go any farther and that he forgot the picture was even there or else he would have taken it off.

"I have a lot of things going on right now," said Podany. "I'm stressed out."

The picture was taken off the website after police told Podany to do so. The judge wanted to order the defendent to post an apology, but he can no longer afford the service.
