CLEVELAND - A major storm system moving through the northeast part of the U.S. funneled in wicked winds to northeast Ohio on Monday.
WKYC Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling says wind gusts near 45 m.p.h. were common at many of the official National Weather Service reporting stations from late morning through early evening.
The highest gust in northeast Ohio was at the Akron Canton Regional Airport at 1:44 p.m. Monday afternoon when the wind was clocked at 53 m.p.h.
In Cleveland, the winds gusted to 45 m.p.h. in downtown Cleveland at Burke Lakefront Airport around 1 p.m. and 48 m.p.h. at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport at 1:27 p.m.
The high winds prompted a Wind Advisory to be in effect for much of the day with some damage reported across the area from downed trees and power lines.
By 8 p.m, the winds fell below the threshold for an advisory, although Kling says windy conditions will continue into Tuesday as the storm system to the northeast moves away from Ohio.
Here are the peak wind gusts from the National Weather Service through 8 p.m. Monday evening:
