Weather across the nation on September 20, 2016

An area of low pressure along the coast of southern California ushered subtropical moisture over the Southwest.

This moisture translated to light to moderate rain and isolated thunderstorms across southern California, southern Nevada, Arizona and southern Utah. Prescott, Ariz., reported a midday total of 0.40 of an inch of rain. Thermal, Calif., reported a midday total of 0.14 of an inch of rain.

Just to the north, a trough of low pressure began to cool conditions off across the Northwest. Deer Park, Wash., recorded a morning low of 35 degrees. Burns, Ore., recorded a morning low of 37 degrees.

Meanwhile, a cold frontal boundary produced scattered showers and thunderstorms across the northern Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley. Flash flood watches were issued in southeast Minnesota, western Wisconsin and northeast Iowa.

Brookings, S.D., reported a midday total of 0.41 of an inch of rain. Hot and humid weather persisted across the central and southern Plains. Heat advisories were issued for eastern Oklahoma. Enid, Okla., recorded a midday high of 93 degrees with a heat index of 99 degrees.

To the east, a wave of low pressure formed along a cold frontal boundary, which brought rain and thunderstorms to the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast. Melfa, Va., reported a midday total of 1.81 inches of rain. Greenville, N.C., reported a midday total of 1.78 inches of rain.

A cluster of thunderstorms also fired up in northern New England. Most of the Northeast and the Midwest avoided precipitation on Tuesday.
