"The Day My Heart Stopped Beating"

It was this past Wednesday morning around 7:45. My husband had arrived overnight with our two new house guests. Razz a mighty miniature pincher and Roxanne a beautiful sweet-loving miniature Schnauzer.

They belong to my sister-in-law who is recovering from surgery in New York, so I agreed to look after her beloved pets while she recuperates.

Rodney got up early Wednesday to let the dogs out including my Velvet, a miniature poodle. A few minutes later he returns with a look of horror on his face saying the "dogs" are gone! What do you mean they're gone, we have a fence I said. Please tell me their collars were on when you let them out? Yes, he replied but they have no name tags with phone numbers.

I scramble out of bed, hair not done, no makeup, not stopping to brush my teeth, grabbing a miss-matched sweatsuit and headed straight for the car. Rodney searches our neighborhood, knocking on doors, while I decide to patrol a development behind ours.

We search frantically, calling their names to no avail. I literally stopped breathing with thoughts of how to tell a woman who's in the hospital that I've lost her most beloved possessions, "her children!" I notice people are beginning to stare as I continue casing the neighborhood, I wonder if they'll call police saying a strange woman is lurking in their backyards and yelling out loud to herself. If I had stopped to think about it for a moment, I must have looked quite ridiculous, but there was no time to care about that.

As I headed home with my head held low, I couldn't believe my eyes, two dogs darted out in front of my car, Its "Razz and Roxanne!" I spring from the car and yell for them, Roxanne immediately runs towards me and jumps in the front seat, but Razz takes off in the opposite direction heading into the near-by metro-park.

He's so tiny, I lose sight of him as I drive around screaming his name, calling Rodney on my cell to come help search near the park. He tells me to head home and get Roxanne's leash, thinking she'll be able to lure him out of the park.

I arrive home, pull into the drive and I see the most beautiful sight I think I've ever seen...Razz is at the front gate trying to figure out how to get back in to the gate!

How could this be? How could a dog who just arrived at a new house hours earlier find his way home? I didn't care about the answers, my nightmare was over, I could finally "breathe" again.

Hi Romona- I know exactly how you felt! This past Sunday morning I was sitting by the upstairs patio window while my mom was making breakfast. The neighbor dogs Otis and Earl like to come visit our dogs Mr. Pugsley and Happy. Forgetting the downstairs patio door was open Mr. Pugsley and Happy went right through the screen to go out and play with their buddies. Neither dog goes out alone so to our panic we dropped what we were doing to run out for them. Our biggest fear would be they would run out to the busy street and get hit by a car. As my mom and I frantically scream their names we finally see them all playing in the neighbors yard. All was okay...so we thought. Upon going back into the house we saw our worst nightmare. Smoke and flames. My mom's love for our dogs made her completely forget she had oil heating on the stove for the hash browns. We quickly got the fire extinguisher and put out the flames. The stove, and microwave were ruined. The worst part of all is that a fire from a faulty coffee pot destroyed their kitchen only a few months before. The good part was that everyone was okay, my brother and sisters came over and we painted, cleaned, bought new appliances and have the house back to looking new-all so my mom would not have to worry. Last fire she was without a kitchen for 3 months! We spent the next day having a family cookout, laughing, and making sure the downstairs patio door was CLOSED! Have to love the pets :-)

Hi Bob,
I'm thrilled you had a happy ending as well.
They give us quite a scare at times but the love they give in return is well worth it.
Sorry about your Mom's Kitchen!
Thanks for sharing your story.

Velvet, stayed home like a good girl.
It was the two rebels I was taking care of that left the house. I found Roxanne wandering the nearby streets...but Raz found his way home himself. I will never know how?

Hi Romona- This story goes back a bit..to 2004-May.
We have a Beagle (red beagle) named Bailey...the most handsome-gentle-loving boy ever!
I lost my son Michael that May in a hit and run motorcycle accident..a devastating loss and still is to this day!
Soon after returning from his funeral, Bailey bolted out the front door as we were not paying the same attention as usual.
Off he went, nose to the ground as hunting dogs do, never picking up his head, never stopping. He just ran and ran with my daughter running after him hysterically crying for her beloved dog.
She could not catch up as he ran and crossed the street nose to the ground, but thankfully no cars!
Finally...he stopped..a dead stop...for one of his favorite pass times..EATING! Something he found on the ground and first inspected, allowing Sarah to catch up and grab him!
All is well and he is still with us being loved today!
Bailey is a Rescue Dog that had been in 2 homes prior and returned!
Til...Us! We cannot understand WHY he was ever returned...because he is and was from the start the BEST, the very best!
I think he knows I am saying this as he is next to me looking up like "yeah mommy that's me!"
And may I say...your Velvet is just beautiful! Donna

Hi Donna,

First let me say, I'm sorry for your loss. I know your child will always live in your heart.
Bailey sounds like a wonderful companion...where is the picture? I would love to see him?
I can imagine what you and your daughter were going through when he bolted, its as if the world stops and you're fixated on one single thing saving your pet.
I'm so glad you had a happy ending too.
