"STOP, DROP AND ROLL"

We were all taught those three words during grade school in case of a fire.
I found out today that's easier "said than done."

My wool sweater I was wearing caught fire this morning as I went to take a pan off the gas burner. The fire raced from my wrist up my shoulder so quickly, I panicked and started spinning around, frantically screaming and patting my right arm hoping to put out the flames. As you might have imagined my wailing didn't help, it only fueled the flames.

I've always had a plan in case of a house fire, the route I'd take to exit my home depending on the location of the fire. What I hadn't figure out was what I'd do if I caught fire!

So I'm sharing this story to say, have a plan, by all means remain calm and don't panic. I was two feet from my kitchen sink and could have put my arm underwater quickly. A fire extinguisher was literally in the cabinet right beside me, but that wouldn't have helped me in this case.

Just have a plan. I was fortunate, though my arm was covered in black marks...I was relieved to discover they were just soot marks so I came away unscathed.

My husband has banned me from cooking!

I know Sue,

Anyone who knows me realizes the kitchen is a tough place for me.
If I don't cut my fingers, I destroy meals.
Its never been a strong suit!

That experience must have been horrifying. I'm glad that you are okay though.

Hey Stephanie,

It was horrifying...I actually lost my mind for a few seconds.
All I could do was scream.
That's why its such a good idea to think about it and have a plan if you catch fire and not panic!

I am relieved you are okay Ramona, I know you were not really trying to get out of cooking! A couple weeks ago, I was starting our gas grill outside with a long wooden match. I had both burners on high and the grill went WHOOSH! The heat rose up and I thought, this probably isnt' the right technique. A few minutes later I went in to wash my hands and noticed my hair looked like it had sawdust all over it. I brushed at it with my fingers and realized it was burnt hair all falling off. Fortunately, I was due for a haircut and they got me in right away for a "professional" cut. I realize how stupid I was and how blessed...so glad God took care of me, despite me. Glad I didn't need the Solon Fire Dept for complete humiliation.

Hi Deb,

Your ordeal is much more frightening than mine!
I'm so glad you're okay. I guess its just a reminder to us that we need to slow down and concentrate and focus when we're dealing with fire.

I'm so not looking forward to the day Tim says goodbye for good...though I know he and I will remain friends forever.
