News: Powerful winds push Lake Erie water east

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Powerful winds blew some of Lake Erie's water east early Wednesday morning.

In just a couple of hours, water levels rose more than 10 feet in Buffalo, New York, while the lake dropped about five feet on the western end, in Toledo.

The National Weather Service says winds gusting to 60 miles an hour acted like a giant fan blowing on a shallow pool.

News: Crews restoring power after strong winds rake across Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND -- Power crews are making progress in their attempts to restore power to thousands of customers.

As of 2 p.m., the First Energy web site is reporting the biggest remaining outages in Cuyahoga and Lake Counties. In both counties, between 2-5,000 customers are still without power. The hardest hit areas remain the city of Cleveland in Cuyahoga and Willoughby in Lake County.

Elsewhere, the First Energy web site is reporting outages of 500-2,000 customers in Geauga and Ashtabula Counties. Outages numbering fewer than 500 customers are scattered across just about every other county in northeast Ohio.

At the height of the wind storm, more than 20,000 customers were without power. By mid morning the number had dropped to 12,000.

First Energy says crews will keep working until all customers are restored--but how long that will take is not known.

The outages not only involve homes but also many schools. As a result several districts closed Wednesday due to the high wind damage.

As the high winds blew through the area, they knocked down many tree limbs and, in some cases, whole trees. In Willoughby a tree came crashing down onto a home. No injuries were reported.

The downed trees and poles often resulted in road closures. This was the case in Wickliffe where a couple of power poles fell near the intersection of Rush Rd. and Twin Lakes.

Blizzard of '78: Heroic trucker, Supermarket sweethearts

    By WKYC Reporter Dick Russ

The family of truck driver Jim Truly looks back at the blizzard's 30th anniversary this weekend with mixed emotions.

Truly survived six days in the blizzard, trapped in the cab of his truck under a 30 foot snowdrift that was nearly half a mile long.(Pictured)

"They didn't think that, you know, he could have survived that long," recalls his widow, Carol. Jim Truly died of natural causes eight years after the blizzard.

"It was terrible, it was just terrible," she says sadly, taking a pause while paging through the yellowed newsclippings of her husband's amazing survival story. "I wish he was still here today."

Jim Truly was hauling steel from Cleveland to Mansfield when the blizzard hit. He had pulled over to help another driver then decided to wait until the heavy snow passed. It never did.

"It was a difficult time for him, a difficult time for the family," says Truly's daughter Susan Pogue, who was a teenager at the time of the Blizzard of '78. She remembers the day well, and wonders how her dad survived in a dark, freezing truck for so many days.

"Either he had some oxygen trapped underneath there, which is hard to believe, or he had some real good guardian angels blowing air in there for him," Pogue figures.

The family can't forget Jim's homecoming to their house on Denison Avenue on Cleveland's West Side. "I know when he came in the door and greeted all of us and we were crying and everything," Carol Truly remembers, "and then he said 'I need a bath!'"

Carol recalls that the rescued trucker asked for applesauce and hot soup. He had survived the blizzard by eating snow and smoking cigarettes.

"When he got hungry he rolled down the window," Carol explains. "He did a lot of praying and a lot of thinking and thought about all of us."

Truly's daughter says her dad slept a lot in the truck and probably didn't realize how much time had passed because he had left his watch at home. It needed a battery.

"Every time he woke up he was just trying to use the CB radio, trying the CB. He rolled the window down, tried to push with his hand and couldn't get through."

Truly's rescue came when someone in the area heard him banging on the inside of his cab with the lead pipe he kept on the floor of the truck. His family says retelling the story of his heroic survival keeps Jim Truly alive in people's memories.

John and Ginni Tuggle of Uniontown, Ohio (pictured) can't ever forget the Blizzard of '78. She was a cashier at an Akron area IGA Supermarket. He was the manager.

"I called her in to work because I thought she was one person who would get there," remembers John, who wanted to keep the store open in the terrible weather for people who needed essentials.

Ginni answered the call and trudged to the supermarket through the raging blizzard.

"The funny thing is I didn't like him when I first met him," says Ginni. "I really didn't care for this guy but I went in and worked the day of the blizzard."

"We worked together side by side all day long, and we got to know each other," Ginni says.

John Tuggle says there was a reason he called Ginni. "I have to admit she had caught my eye previous to that. And so when it (the blizzard) happened, she was one of the ones I purposely called."

"I arranged that she would be working in close association with me. Had it all planned. Not the weather obviously, but it worked well," smiles John.

It must have worked, as Ginni testifies: "We got married in September and in October I found out I was pregnant."

The Blizzard of '78 had sparked a romance that has lasted 30 years and four children, and still brings quick smiles to the faces of John and Ginni.

"Well it was really cold outside that day," Ginni laughs, "but it was really warm inside that IGA."

News: Cleaner Air for Northeast Ohio

Northeast Ohio residents may have seen little to rejoice about in the harsh weather we experienced last weekend, but the Arctic front did bring us something to celebrate. For four days straight, January 18th through Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, our region experienced crystal-clear pollutant-free air! The Arctic front brought down cold clean air from the north flushing nearly all the fine particle pollutants from the air and preventing new fine particles from forming.

As the warm front moves through this upcoming weekend it will bring increased dewpoints. Matched with light southerly winds on Saturday, fine particle pollution levels with rise back up to "moderate" for this weekend.

Fine particle pollution affects the health of all living things, but affects children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues more severely. If you are part of these more vulnerable groups or know someone who is go to http://www.noaca.org/ to check today's air quality or signup for free email air pollution advisories.

News: Weather conditions varied from the east to west side

CLEVELAND -- They say if you don't like the weather in Cleveland, wait five minutes. Well, that was definitely the case Sunday, and in some cases you only needed to drive five minutes!

The eastside, in cities like Chardon and Thompson, got up to a foot of snow and more.

But to the west in cities like Rocky River and Lakewood, it was sunny and clear, and very little snow on the ground.

But as you moved closer to downtown, the roads got worse. Police had to shut down a 12 mile stretch of I-90 after several accidents.

News: Cold has different effects on different people

    By WKYC Reporter Vic Gideon

CLEVELAND -- Shaker Square was bustling with activity on Saturday night despite frigid temperatures. But not everyone could venture out.

"I just stay in the house when the temperature gets this cold," says Marianne Fink, a senior who lives in the shadow of Shaker Square. "It's dangerous to go out."

Marianne received a voice mail from the City of Cleveland warning about the dangers of going out in the cold. But younger patrons just bundled up and headed out.

"I did not want to stay in the house it all," says Brittany Williams, heading to a movie at the Colony. "It is freezing but I did not want to stay in the house."

Restaurants like Sasa Matsu Japanese Bistro saw a packed house.

"I think on a cold night, there's nothing better to do than to go out and have dinner," says owner Brenda Kim. "It's going to be warm, they're going to have fun, have a great meal."

But for Marianne, she's going to miss a Sunday ritual because of the weather.

"I'm sure missing mass one Sunday isn't going to send me right to hell!" she says.

But even those who braved the cold modify their behavior.

"On colder nights, people definitely hang out a little bit longer," Kim says.

For Marianne, she doesn't mind staying in.

"The only thing I would miss is going to the Indians game and they're not playing!" she jokes.

Thoughts of spring are keeping her and others warm this weekend.

    Cleveland's Temperature Plunge Plot:

News: Winter tips may cost a little upfront but can save thousands

    By WKYC reporter Vic Gideon

UNDATED -- You can try to stay out of the single digit temperatures this weekend but your home doesn't have that option, so be prepared to spend a little money to get it ready for the cold.

"Burst water pipes, water damage, and I hope everyone learned their lesson from last year," says Bill Sheck of Seitz-Agin Hardware in Cleveland Heights about the dangers of the cold. "People should be prepared to insulate their doors, their windows, and even their electrical outlets."

Many people don't know they're losing heat through electrical outlets and suggests putting a foam insulators in the for about a dime a piece. He suggests putting insulation all around doors and windows.

"Put the double-stick tape on, put the plastic on, take the hair dryer to it, and now you've almost vacuum-sealed your window against Arctic air creeping in," Sheck says the window insulation kits that run about $21. Door insulation runs about $8.

Something you also might not realize: rock salt doesn't work below 15 degrees.

"Your best bet is the pure Calcium Chloride," he says. "It's going to melt fifteen degrees below zero, it's not going to harm your pets, not going to harm your grass, not going to stain your carpeting or indoor flooring."

It costs about four times more than rock salt at $20 for a 50-pound bag. But the best investment might be a cord of wood for the fireplace, selling at Seitz-Agin for $6.49

    News: Snow Care Program

    By WKYC Reporter Lydia Esparra

STRONGSVILLE -- While many of us have been waiting for the snow, it can be dangerous for the elderly. In Strongsville, they offer a program for seniors who can't afford to plow or shovel their drives.

    It's called Snow Care.

And seniors 62 and over on a limited fixed budget, apply for the program in September and if they qualify by the time the snow flies, city snow plows are at their driveway.

Snow Care is a city service so there is no additional charge to residents.

They only get the service when there is 3 inches or more of snow.

We've heard of similiar programs in Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, and Tallmadge, to name just a few cities.

News: Fire marshal reminds Ohioans about heating safety

COLUMBUS -- The state fire marshal says Ohioans need to be smart when using portable heaters, wood stoves and fireplaces to keep warm this winter. Ten people died and 56 people were hurt in heating-related house fires in Ohio during 2006, the latest year for which numbers are available.

Fire Marshal Michael Bell says most home heating fires are caused by human error, when heating units are used without caution or not according to the directions.

Bell says portable space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn, and fireplaces and wood-burning stoves need to be cleaned out every year.

News: Geologists seek answers to recent earthquakes in Ohio

CLEVELAND -- Geologists are trying to figure out why Ohio has had so many small earthquakes in recent years.

Tuesday's small earthquake under Lake Erie, which was felt by people along the lakeshore, was the 55th recorded quake over 2.0 magnitude in Ohio in the last decade.

That's about the same number as in the previous 30 years, according to the Ohio Seismic Network.

Sylvia Hayek is a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.

She says Ohio may be reacting to something called glacial or crustal rebound. It's the idea that the Earth's crust is still recovering or shifting from the retreat of glaciers that moved over the continent starting about 2 million years ago.

Wicked wind caused power outages Wednesday

    By WKYC Reporter Mike O'Mara

GENEVA -- Nervous neighbors borrowed generators today as the wait for power continues. For many residents nothing was more comforting than the sound of the generator motor firing up.

In Geneva, Pastor James Walker was about to have a flooded basement and got the power flowing in the nick of time.

"I've already taken hundreds of gallons out there by hand for the failed sump pump", said a weary Walker. "Thank goodness we got this thing."

Dozens of crews on emergency status were sawing downed trees and limbs from toppled power lines all across Northeast Ohio.

Early this morning some of the gale force winds clocked above 60 miles an hour. Block wide outages were reported in Lakewood and Parma. In Cleveland's Little Italy and Wade Park neighborhoods, residents waited patiently in the dark.

Huge trees were no match for the power of Mother Nature in Aquilla Village in Geauga county.

"You should have seen it. There were sparks flying all over!"

Near Ashtabula, Danny Thompson had the closest call. A power line came down on top of his truck as he was leaving work this morning. He was trapped inside the vehicle for two hours as his door handles started melting.

"Then it would would spark off the road, too. That's when the truck door handles actually started smoking and burning. I was getting pretty darn nervous."

School parking lots were empty in Geneva and Ashtabula with classes cancelled because of power concerns this morning. That was great news for young students playing football instead of studying for exams.

"I got up and saw it on Channel 3 News", said student Jimmy O'Leary. "And then I said oh yeah!"

By 7:30p.m. Wednesday night, more than 6,000 customers of First Energy were still waiting for the lights to come back on.

Moderate quake shakes homes in Lake County; 'Big One' not likely here

LAKE COUNTY -- Near Lake Erie, people knew something was happening Tuesday night. An earthquake measured at 3.0, moderate in intensity, was felt from Willowick to Mentor Tuesday evening.

"I was sleeping when the earthquake hit," a resident tells Channel 3 News. Their bed shook and the quake awakened them.

The tremor happened at 8:24 pm and shook homes in the area but cause no damage or injuries.

The earthquake was centered about six miles off Lake Erie at Mentor-on-the-Lake.

Callers to Mentor-on-the-Lake's 9-1-1 emergency system said they felt their houses shaking and thought right away it was an earthquake.

"Quakes of this magnitude usually don't cause property damage," said Dr. David Pierce, a professor at Lakeland Community College which has one of the 25 stations in the Ohio Seismic Network, formed in 1999 to measure earthquake activity.

Pierce says the 1986 quake that caused widespread property damage in Lake County is still the strongest earthquake measured in Ohio. It registered 5.0 on the Richter Scale.

Because of Ohio geological characteristics, Pierce said a much larger quake, such as have happened in California and Alaska, is highly unlikely here.

"But if you have something in magnitude of 5 you may have shifting of the lands where your basements get ruined," explains Pierce.

He says a new theory of why we're having all these quakes around the lake is tied to the Wisconsin Glacier of 10,000 years ago. The glacier was a mile high and this might be "glacial rebound."

"That this compressed land is now starting to rebound up and that rebound is the feeling you get from an earthquake," says Pierce.

Rising mercury raises the spirit of Clevelanders

    By WKYC Reporter Chris Tye

But there is no question that the record in Cleveland for January 7th was broken, with a 65 degree reading at Hopkins airport. "It's beautiful, it's gorgeous," says Stephanie Perusek, who was spending the day with her kids at the Metroparks in Willoughby.

"We know that at the end of the week it will snow again, and we'll probably be skiing by Friday."

Others used this warmth to get chores done. "We are going home tonight and taking down our Christmas lights," says Julie Fetchik of Willoughby. And she wasn't alone. City of Cleveland workers were taking down the big city Christmas lights Monday -taking advantage of the warmth.

Some were taking advantage of the wind. Among them, Craig Lovejoy. "Look at this day," he says. "It is beautiful. And it's the middle of January. Can you believe it?"

For those stuck in an office all day today, Lovejoy simply says, "I'm sorry."

    New Record Highs Set Today

Monday was an unseasonably mild January day with a southerly flow of wind.

Several record high temperatures nearly a 100 years old were broken across Northeast Ohio including at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the Akron Canton Regional Airport.

    Akron Canton Airport
    64 degrees (old record 61 in 1907)

    Cleveland Hopkins International
    65 degrees (old record 63 in 1907)

The mild weather is expected to continue through tomorrow, though a HIGH WIND WATCH has been issued as a strong cold front approaches from the west and will move through by Tuesday night.

We'll have a return to more seasonable temperatures and a chance of more snow by the weekend.

Mild weather in store for Northeast Ohio

High pressure off the Carolina coast was bringing a strong southerly flow of air into Ohio this afternoon.

Since daybreak, temperatures have been on a steady rise into the 50s. However, skies will remain mostly cloudy this afternoon with a chance of showers or drizzle.

The warmer temperatures will also help the recent snows to melt, causing some rivers to rise slightly.

Low pressure from a large storm out west will begin moving northeast from Iowa, across the Upper Great Lakes and into Canada by tonight.

The high off the Carolina coast will remain there through Monday night which will keep a southerly flow of warm moist air into the Buckeye State.

We'll begin to cool down Wednesday and return to more seasonable temperatures by Thursday.

Got mail? Shovel a path for the postal carrier

By WKYC Web Reporter Kim Wendel

Northeast Ohio residents are asked to help with snow and ice removal so postal carriers can avoid delivery delays and possible injury by clearing a path free of snow and ice to their mailbox. "We want to assure there are no delays in mail delivery caused by carriers being unable to approach mailboxes safely," says postal spokesman Dave Van Allen.

He said letter carriers are advised to not risk a vehicle accident or a fall if access to a mailbox is not free of snow or ice. In those cases, mail may be returned and delivery re-attempted the next day. Injuries to letter carriers, primarily from slips, trips and falls, increase during winter months.

Customers can help limit injuries and assure their mail gets through by:

    *Clearing ice and snow from curbside boxes to allow mail trucks to approach and drive away without the need for backing;

    *Clearing walkways of snow and ice and provide traction on steps and porches, especially painted ones;

*Clearing overhangs to avoid falling ice and dripping water that can freeze into icy patches.

Ski season starts in earnest, but may not be for long

    By WKYC Reporter Chris Tye

PENINSULA -- It's the busiest day of the year at Boston Mills ski resort. The snow fell, the schools were closed and, for the first time winter lovers had what they wanted.

"In a word, today is perfect," says Kim Laubenthal of Boston Mills.

Some ski enthusiasts weren't sure their season would ever happen.

"Now that the snow is falling, I'll be here everyday," says Mike Hutchinson of Geneva.

But, this late Christmas gift may not be here for long, with fifty-degree temperatures expected by Sunday, bringing with it a halt to this ski surge.

"We have now created a base of snow," Laubenthal says. "Now we can keep the base and continue making new snow on top of it all season."
