Aggressive storm hits Willoughby Hills

WILLOUGHBY HILLS -- Around 3:15 Saturday afternoon, Willoughby Hills was hit with an aggressive storm, according to a police department announcement.

Police say the storm only lasted 15 minutes, but knocked down several trees, one of which fell onto an occupied pick-up truck at the police station.

The female passenger was transported to a hospital. There is no word on her condition.

All of the city's service departments are out with chainsaws, trying to clear away trees that have fallen onto houses.

Police confirm that Community Days, a local event, was canceled as a result of the storm.

There were many power outages and a small electrical fire in the dispatch center of the Police Station. The fire was brought under control quickly, and the dispatch center is back to fully operational status.

Apparently, no one was hurt in the fire.

News: Lorain County gets hit hard on Thursday

By WKYC Reporter Obie Shelton

LORAIN COUNTY -- As we wait to see what the latest round of stormy weather dishes out---folks in Lorain County are still cleaning-up after Thursday's severe weather.

Nearly the entire viewing area was put under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings over the course of the afternoon and early evening. But in Lorain County, residents say it appears the storms were more concentrated especially for people living in Wellington and Lorain.

According to the NOAA National Weather Forecast Office in Cleveland, storm damage reports from the Lorain County Emergency Management Agency put rainfall amounts from the storm at 3.63 inches of rain. The rain fell so intensely that it literally "scoured" the soil away from roots causing trees to topple.

Greenwood Cemetery reported two trees down.

The flash floods created by the torrential rains have left some roads still closed in the southern portion of Lorain County. Rising creek waters along Cemetery Road washed out the pavement in one spot.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning through Saturday morning for the Black River at Elyria. Minor flooding is reported and is expected until the river crests later this evening.

Video Feature: "Lake Erie: Beyond the Surface", Part 4

As the high definition leader in locally produced programming in Northeast Ohio, WKYC is proud to showcase our region's most important natural resource in a year- long effort. Lake Erie: Beyond The Surface is a thirty-minute HD special.

It is the last of four programs dealing with the fate and future of our great lake.

Under the cold murky water of Lake Erie lie thousands of shipwrecks, evidence of our rich maritime heritage.

For centuries, these waters have provided vital shipping lanes, abundant food, and the power to drive industry. But while the water's generosity seemed limitless, the lake itself was not. It's taken decades to reclaim this greatest of resources. We stand by the shores of a cleaner lake, but also at the crossroads of some key decisions.

What does the future hold for this lake? Our region?

Channel 3 explores the growth of international shipping, lakefront development, how Lake Erie will be managed to ensure its future, the newest environmental threat and the lake's role as a renewable energy resource.

Northeast Ohio: Waterspouts form over Lake Erie

Cooler than normal temperatures with an upper level trough over the Great Lakes makes for some interesting weather Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service says it has received reports of waterspouts along the lake shore from Avon Point to Cleveland to Mentor.

Photos: Waterspouts

Video: Waterspout near downtown Cleveland

Video: Waterspouts off Huntington Beach

Read the story

There are generally 5 stages to a waterspout.

1st Stage: The first sign, which can be seen from the air but usually not from a boat, is the formation of a dark spot on the water. Many dark spots dissipate without growing into a spout.

2nd Stage: A boat at the surface would probably feel the wind shift and maybe increase. Also, if you looked upward, you might see a funnel coming from a cloud overhead or off to one side.

3rd Stage: Even though it might be invisible, a vortex is reaching the lake surface from the cloud. At this time you might see the funnel pointing down from the cloud toward the ring.

4th Stage: When the funnel reaches all the way from the cloud to the lake surface. You can usually see through the funnel - it's really a thin cloud of tiny water droplets. During this stage, small waves are being kicked up and the spout leaves a bubbly wake behind as it moves across the water.

5th Stage: The spray vortex weakens as the funnel becomes shorter and retracts into the base of the cloud disconnecting from the surface. This usually occurs when the cloud producing the funnel crosses from the water to land.

News: Lucas County Not a Tornado, Just High Winds

The National Weather Service office in Cleveland concluded Tuesday that damage in Lucas County in Northwest Ohio was caused by straight line winds and not a tornado as first thought on June 9th.

The survey team toured Sylvania and Springfield Townships and estimated winds to have been between 60 and 75 m.p.h. around 7:30 p.m.

Officials found the damage path was approximately two and a half miles in length and
started near the intersection of Centennial Road and Dorr Street. The damage path continued northeast and ended along McCord Road and north of Bancroft Street.

Many large trees and limbs were downed along this path. At least one home and one outbuilding were heavily damaged by fallen trees. A second home also sustained damage when a tree was uprooted causing damage to the foundation.
