Another day of thunderstorms dumps heavy rain on northern Ohio

CLEVELAND -- Another round of showers and thunderstorms brought some minor damage and flooding rains to the area for a second straight day.

A warm and sticky afternoon made ideal conditions for heavy rains, thunder and lightning across many areas of northeast Ohio on Wednesday.

The first round of storms brought total rainfall amounts of up to 4 inches in Sandusky and Ottawa Counties where flash flood warnings were posted throughout much of the evening.
Weather watchers in the Port Clinton area reported knee high water in that city. Magruder Hospital had to close its main entrance as flood waters got too deep.

Another area of storms moved through the Cleveland area with some minor damage in Westlake where a tree was reported down, in North Olmsted with limbs down on wires, in North Mentor in Lake County with a small tree down and another fell in Painesville also in Lake County.

3/4" hail was reported in the Kent area with a third batch of storms that moved through Summit and Portage Counties.

The rain also delayed the start of Indians vs. Tampa Bay game at Progressive Field for 1 hour and 55 minutes.

WKYC Meteorologist Betsy Kling says another round of showers and thunderstorms will occur on Thursday as a cold front nears the state.

Once it passes, we'll have a nice looking weekend ahead.

Memorial Days have a good chance of being warm

By Frank Macek

CLEVELAND -- Memorial Day is Monday, but what are the chances of a nice holiday each year in northeast Ohio?

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, your chances of a Memorial holiday with temperatures of at least 75 degrees are about 44%.

That leaves us with a 56% chance it will be cooler than 75 degrees based on the average temperature of the holiday since 1900.

However, keep in mind Memorial Day is occurring a bit earlier than normal this year. Only 4 others times (1981, 1987, 1992 and 1998) has it occurred this early since 1866 when it was first observed as "Decoration Day."

Prior to 1971, the holiday was always observed on May 30th.

On June 28, 1968, the United States Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved three holidays from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend.

The holidays included Washington's Birthday, now celebrated as Presidents' Day; Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May.

That law took effect at the federal level in 1971.

So, let's look at how temperatures fared on the holiday during the past 109 years.

Holidays when temperatures were in a particular range:

14 days were in the 50s
33 days were in the 60s
34 days were in the 70s
25 days were in the 80s
3 days were in the 90s

The hottest Memorial Days hit 90 degrees on:

*May 30th in 1944, 1953 and 1988

The coldest Memorial Day was 53 degrees on:

*May 30th in 1903

So enjoy the holiday, remember and appreciate the Fallen and be sure to have the sunscreen handy just in case!

A Record Setting Start to Monday

By Frank Macek

CLEVELAND -- If you thought it was unusually cold this morning, you were right. It was record setting cold!

The National Weather Service says we set a new record low of 34 degrees Monday morning at 5:20 a.m.

That beats the old record by 2 degrees...36 degrees set in 1985.

The Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport also set a new record low of 30 degrees at 5:34 a.m. this morning.

Their old record was 33 degrees in 1983.

Elsewhere across the area, morning lows temperatures were as follows:

Akron Canton: 35 degrees
Mansfield: 34 degrees
Toledo: 34 degrees

Northeast Ohio will see another round of cold overnight temperatures Tuesday morning with Frost Advisories once again issued for much of the area.

Weather Radios: a safety MUST have

By Meteorologist Betsy Kling

Let's say it is 3AM and you are stirred awake by a rumble of thunder and the sound of something hitting your house. Suddenly, you hear more crashing and then the window blows out...

It could happen, and it does, dozens of times per year.

Ohio is no stranger to severe weather, and storms and tornados do not discriminate between night and day. Certainly there are various time frames during which severe weather is more possible than others, but the key is to be able to get information no matter what time of day (or night) it is.

A NOAA weather radio is a must have for every home and business. Today's weather radios are programmable, so you can be alerted to watches and warnings for only your county, or perhaps a county or two near yours as well.

Weather Focus 3: Freezing temperatures not that unusual in early May

By Frank Macek

Tuesday morning's cold weather isn't that unusual for northern Ohio as we near the normal last freeze dates of the season.

For much of the area, the average date for the last 32 degree morning low temperature in spring is usually in late April or early May.

Since records have been kept at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the last freeze date occurs on April 21st on average, thanks to the nearness of Lake Erie and its impact on local area temperatures.

Away from the lake, freezing temperatures often occur through the first half of the month of May.

However, frost can still occur later in the season which according to the National Weather Service can happen when temperatures reach or fall below 36 degrees.

Tuesday morning's low reached 37 degrees at 5:33 a.m. in Cleveland, though many areas away from the lake were well below that.

So even though the calendar says May, northern Ohio can still have some frosty mornings.

News: Ohio Professor Blames Cicada Wake Up On Climate Change

CINCINNATI -- An biology professor who has been studying cicadas for decades says something seems to be going wacky with the obnoxiously loud insects' body rhythms, and he believes it's related to climate change.

Gene Kritsky at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati says cicadas are emerging on the Eastern seaboard, primarily in North Carolina, four years ahead of schedule. No brood was expected in the U.S. this year.

This is the fifth brood Kritsky has documented waking up four years early. They usually emerge every 17 years when the ground temperature reaches about 65 degrees.

Cicadas count the years by the fluid flow in tree roots, and Kritsky says a mild December-January followed by a hard freeze and another period of warmth affects that flow.

Ask The Channel 3 Weather Team: What's The Difference Between Weather And Climate?

Submitted By: Connie Granderson

Question:

What is the difference between weather and climate?

Answered by Meteorologist Hollie Strano:

Here are your answers, straight from the AMS glossary!

CLIMATE: The slowly varying aspects of the atmosphere-hydrosphere-land surface system.
It is typically characterized in terms of suitable averages of the climate system over periods of a month or more, taking into consideration the variability in time of these averaged quantities. Climatic classifications include the spatial variation of these time-averaged variables. Beginning with the view of local climate as little more than the annual course of long-term averages of surface temperature and precipitation, the concept of climate has broadened and evolved in recent decades in response to the increased understanding of the underlying processes that determine climate and its variability.

WEATHER: The state of the atmosphere, mainly with respect to its effects upon life and human activities. As distinguished from climate, weather consists of the short-term (minutes to days) variations in the atmosphere. Popularly, weather is thought of in terms of temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, visibility, and wind. 2. As used in the taking of surface weather observations, a category of individual and combined atmospheric phenomena that must be drawn upon to describe the local atmospheric activity at the time of observation.

Thanks for your question.

April in Review: A warm start to spring

CLEVELAND -- The month of April was warmer and drier than normal across northeast Ohio.

According to the latest monthly climate report, April seemed more like late than early spring, thanks to a warm spell that elevated temperatures in the 80s.

The National Weather Service says the four days in row of highs in the 80s was a record, never before seen during the month since records began over 100 years ago.

At Hopkins, the temperature averaged 3.1 degrees ABOVE the normal high. The highest temperature was April 26th at 86 degrees and the lowest on April 7th at 28 degrees.

It was also a little drier than normal across the Greater Cleveland area during April with 3.37" of rainfall measured. That is .29 inches BELOW normal with the greatest 24 hour total on April 14th and 15th with 1.01" of rain.

Not much snow fell either if you are keeping tallies. April saw 2.6 inches during the month, with most of that occurring April 7th. For the season, we have had 80.0 inches of snow.

Other recent Aprils have been considerably different. In 2005, the month was the snowiest on record, with 19 inches, and two years later 13.7 inches fell on the city, making it Cleveland's third-snowiest April.

News: Researchers releasing Lake Erie wind turbine study

CLEVELAND -- Researchers are releasing results of a yearlong study to determine whether winds blowing across Lake Erie can support wind turbines.

Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Case Western Reserve University and others planned to release the study Friday morning at the Great Lakes Wind Energy Center.

Supporters envision a pilot wind energy project in Lake Erie near downtown Cleveland.

The study was planned to look at the financial, environmental and engineering hurdles of such a project.
