October 2009 in Review: Wetter Than Normal

CLEVELAND -- October wraps up the first full month of Fall 2009 with near normal temperatures, but above normal rainfall.

In their monthly climate report, the National Weather Service in Cleveland says the month turned out normal with an average high of 59.7 degrees and an average low of 45.0 degrees.

October saw a rollercoaster ride of temperatures with a balmy high of 76 degrees on October 30th to a chilly morning low of 35 degrees on October 18th. No records were set in Cleveland during the month.

The weather service reports a total of 17 days were actually below average during the month thanks to a period of chillier weather during the first half of October. Meanwhile, several days during the 2nd half of the month were well above normal including on October 21st, 22nd and 30th.

On the precipitation side, Cleveland was about an inch wetter than normal thanks to several days of heavy rains on October 2nd, 9th, 16th, 28th and 31st when at least a third of an inch of rain fell in a 24 hour period of time.

Cleveland received a grand total of 3.66 inches of rain - none of which was recorded as snow officially at the airport, though some areas east of the city did receive at least a trace during the month.

Last year, the first snow had fallen by October 27th when a trace was recording at Hopkins.
So far since January 1st, the area stands at 31.60 inches of rain or .58 inches BELOW normal year-to-date.

Goodbye Daylight Saving, 'Fall Back' This Weekend

In the past, the time change happened on the last Sunday in October. This year, and all years after, the end of Daylight Saving Time will occur on the first Sunday in November.

Fire departments across the country also urge you to change the batteries in all your smoke detectors this weekend. The time change is just a convenient reminder to do that.

What's the purpose of changing the clocks anyway?

Daylight Saving Time (or summertime, as it is called in many countries) is a way of getting more light out of the day by advancing clocks by one hour during the summer.

During Daylight Saving Time, the sun appears to rise one hour later in the morning, when people are usually asleep anyway, and sets one hour later in the evening, seeming to stretch the day longer.

The reason DST seems to work is because its saves energy due to less artificial light needed during the evening hours -- clocks are set one hour ahead during the spring, and one hour back to standard time in the fall.

It was Benjamin Franklin who first suggested Daylight Saving Time in 1784, but it was not until World War I, in 1916, when it was adopted by several counties in Europe that initially rejected the idea.

Indian Summer Gets a Warm Welcome

CLEVELAND -- In a season where sick calls are a little easier to make, thanks to swine flu, Wednesday's weather made playing hooky a tempting option.

"This may be the last time I can play golf around here this year," said Henry VanHala, one of hundreds of golfers that filled Big Met golf course in Rocky River Wednesday.

"I'm the eternal optimist," he says. "There will be plenty more days like this." But when pressed a little, he caves: "OK, I don't think it will last long."

The hour-plus wait to play golf at the course was a sign of how intensely appreciative Clevelanders are of this Oct. 22 warm up.

Boaters like Don Adams were of like mind.

"October hasn't been a good month for fishing," he said. "But it's ok, God's still good and tomorrow's supposed to be pretty nice too."

Tom McMahon is a kayaker from North Ridgeville who took today to get back on the lake too. "It's been a cool summer, so I'm happy to sneak out here today," he said.

Downtown restaurants that provide outdoor options were also crowded, as were garden centers with green thumbs trying to get in some last-minute yard work.

An Indian summer that warms us up, and breaks us out of the cabin fever, seemed to set in early this year.

Northeast Ohio: Fall Colors Peak Fast Approaching

KIRTLAND -- As the days get shorter and nights grow colder, the colors of autumn have begun to show themselves.

In most of Northeast Ohio, the leaves are well into their yearly color transformation, with the most vibrant hues still a week or so away.

Winter outlook: NOAA Says Drier and Near Normal Temperatures This Year for Ohio

WASHINGTON -- El Nino to help steer U.S. winter weather according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration this winter.

El Nino in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean is expected to be a dominant climate factor that will influence the December through February winter weather in the United States, according to the 2009 Winter Outlook released today by NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.Such seasonal outlooks are part of NOAA's suite of climate services.

"We expect El Nino to strengthen and persist through the winter months, providing clues as to what the weather will be like during the period," says Mike Halpert, deputy director of the Climate Prediction Center - a division of the National Weather Service. "Warmer ocean water in the equatorial Pacific shifts the patterns of tropical rainfall that in turn change the strength and position of the jetstream and storms over the Pacific Ocean and the U.S."

"Other climate factors are also likely to play a role in the winter weather at times across the country," added Halpert. "Some of these factors, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation are difficult to predict more than one to two weeks in advance. The NAO adds uncertainty to the forecast in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic portions of the country."

Highlights of the U.S. Winter Outlook (December through February) include:

Warmer-than-average temperatures are favored across much of the western and central U.S., especially in the north-central states from Montana to Wisconsin. Though temperatures may average warmer than usual, periodic outbreaks of cold air are still possible.
Below-average temperatures are expected across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic from southern and eastern Texas to southern Pennsylvania and south through Florida.
Above-average precipitation is expected in the southern border states, especially Texas and Florida. Recent rainfall and the prospects of more should improve current drought conditions in central and southern Texas. However, tornado records suggest that there will also be an increased chance of organized tornado activity for the Gulf Coast region this winter.
Drier-than-average conditions are expected in the Pacific Northwest and the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys.
Northeast: Equal chances for above-, near-, or below-normal temperatures and precipitation. Winter weather in this region is often driven not by El Nino but by weather patterns over the northern Atlantic Ocean and Arctic, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation. These patterns are often more short-term, and are generally predictable only a week or so in advance.
California: A slight tilt in the odds toward wetter-than-average conditions over the entire state.
Alaska: Milder-than-average temperatures except along the western coast. Equal chances for above-, near-, or below-median precipitation for most areas except above median for the northwest.
Hawaii: Below-average temperatures and precipitation are favored for the entire state.

This seasonal outlook does not predict where and when snowstorms may hit or total seasonal snowfall accumulations. Snow forecasts are dependent upon winter storms, which are generally not predictable more than several days in advance.

September in Review: Slightly Warmer and Wetter Than Normal

CLEVELAND -- The month of September turned out to be slightly warmer and wetter than normal for 2009.

For the 30 day period, the National Weather Service in Cleveland says the area wound up a little more than two degrees warmer than the normal average for the month of September.

The highest temperature reached 81 degrees on both the 14th and 20th. The average daily high was 73.8 degrees.

The chilliest temperature recorded was 41 on the final day of the month. The average daily low was 57.0 degrees.

The area saw near normal amounts of precipitation for September with 3.84 inches of rain filling the gauge at the airport. That figure was .07 inches wetter than usual.

The greatest 24 hour rain total occured between September 29th and 30th when .96 inches of rain fell.

Since January 1st, our rainfall total tally stood at 27.94 inches of rainfall through the end of September, or 1.51 inches drier than the normal average of 29.45"

Elsewhere across northern Ohio, only Mansfield came close to record setting lows when the mercury fell to 43 degrees on September 1st. That tied a record low set at Lahm Airport in 1935.

Weather Poll Results: What Will Be The Highest Temperature We See This Summer In Cleveland?

CLEVELAND -- Earlier in the summer we asked you to weigh in on just how hot you thought it would get this summer in Cleveland.

The official results are in.

From the first day of Summer on June 21st to the last day on September 22nd, the high temperature only reached 93 degrees this year at Cleveland Hopkins Airport on August 9th.

The lowest temperature for the summer was 48 degrees on August 31st.

The greater Cleveland area only recorded 5 days above 90 degrees for the entire summer we discovered in analyzing the 90 day period.

The top five hottest days were:

93 degrees on August 9th
92 degrees on August 16th
92 degrees on August 10th
92 degrees on June 25th
91 degrees on August 17th

A Chilly Morning Kicks Off October

CLEVELAND -- A cold morning chilled the pumpkins across the area on the first day of October.

Temperatures in many areas away from Lake Erie fell into the 30's on Thursday morning.

Among the major National Weather Service reporting stations, the lowest temperatures ranged from 30 degrees in Findlay to 32 degrees in Toledo and 33 degrees at Mansfield.

Cleveland Hopkins International only dropped to 40 degrees, while the Akron Canton Airport dipped to 35 degrees.

WKYC Meteorologist Betsy Kling says "the chilly weather isn't that unusual" for early October. "It's more of a harsh wake up call from Mother Nature that the seasons are indeed changing."

Weather Focus 3: The October Harvest Moon

CLEVELAND -- October 4th will bring the annual Harvest full moon to northeast Ohio.

The Harvest Moon is the one closest to the autumn equinox. In three out of four years or so, the full Harvest Moon occurs in September. In the other years, it occurs in early October including in 2009.

This particular full moon is named as such because farmers can work late into the night by the amount of light generated by the moon. According to tradition, the Harvest Moon is when the corn, pumpkins, squash beans and wild rice are finally ready for gathering.

Although the moon rises and sets about 50 minutes later each day. During the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise around the same time over a period of several days.

In the U.S. this time is only 25 to 30 minutes different each night, while in much of Canada and Europe, the moon appears to rise just 10 to 20 minutes later each day during this same time. This effect has to do with the seasonal tilt of the earth in the fall.

People believe the Harvest Moon appears bigger, brighter and more colorful than other full moons.

The warm color is more an optical illusion, called "Moon Illusion" during the moon's ascent into the nighttime sky. When the moon appears near the horizon, an observer is looking at it through a larger amount of atmospheric particles than when it is found overhead.

During this time, the atmosphere is more able to scatter the bluish component of moonlight and allows the reddish component to reach our eyes.

In reality, this same process occurs with all full moons over the course of the year.

In other years when the full moon occurs later in October, the moon is called the "Hunter's Moon" or the "Moon of Falling Leaves."

Get ready to enjoy this year's Harvest Moon that will reach maximum fullness on Sunday, October 4th at 2:10 a.m., EDT.

Earth Gauge: Air Quality improved during 2009

According to EPA's AIRNow Program, the summer of 2009 had better ozone air quality than years past.

Many U.S. cities experienced at least 80 percent fewer days when ozone air pollution reached levels that were Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) or higher on the Air Quality Index.

This trend was especially apparent in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S., where above average precipitation and below average temperatures helped keep ozone pollution levels lower.

A stormy weather pattern kept skies cloudy and the atmosphere well-mixed, which limited the reactions between sunlight, heat and air pollutants that cause ozone formation.

Viewer Tip:

Weather conditions may have been the primary driver of better ozone air quality over the summer, but reductions in emissions contribute to better air quality, too.

Transportation accounts for more than 28 percent of U.S. energy consumption and 25 percent of our air pollution.

Reduce your emissions by giving alternative transportation a try - carpooling, using mass transit, walking or riding your bike to work or school just one day per week can make a difference.

Weather Focus 3: First Freeze Of The Year Is Right Around The Corner

CLEVELAND -- With the coming of Fall, the new season brings our first opportunity for freezing temperatures that can quickly bring an end to the growing season.

According to the National Weather Service office in Cleveland, most areas in northern Ohio will see their first 32 degree temperature at night by mid-October.

As you might guess, Lake Erie is a huge influence over the lakeshore counties acting as a blanket that insulates us from colder weather for longer into October than areas away from the lake.

Outlying areas can expect to see temperatures drop at night into the 30s during the first week of October and gradually sneak northward by the middle part of the month.

This occurs because the lake is warmer than the land temperature.

On average, Cleveland will not see its first 32 degree temperature until October 29th.

In comparison, Warren in Trumbull County usually records a freezing temperature by October 5th, Coshocton on October 8th, Ashland on October 11th and Chardon on October 14th

So keep in mind the nights will soon get chillier thanks to less daytime sunlight and longer nighttime hours.

And remember, the best chance of frost occurs on clear nights when winds are light to non-existent. When a frost advisory is issued, you should take steps to protect any outdoors plants whose life you wish to extend as long as possible.

Here It Comes: Fall '09

Say goodbye to summer. Autumn "officially" arrives Tuesday at 5:18 pm.

It always seems to arrive so quickly, doesn't it? Fall. It's back. Although cooler temperatures are nice, along with comfortable sleeping weather and lower humidities, we know what follows: Shorter daylight hours, colder temps, and dare we say it, SNOW!

Ever wonder what "equinox" means? It's latin for "equal nights" and it happens only twice per year. The equinox marks the time when the sun's most direct rays are falling at the Equator (or zero degrees latitude).

Moreover, daylight all around Planet Earth is exactly 12 hours. As the days wear on, the Northern Hemisphere continues to lose daylight and the Southern Hemisphere gains this time.

The equinoxes are precisely reversed in each hemisphere. What does that mean? The North's autumnal equinox is the South's vernal equinox and vice versa.

As our daylight and temperatures wane, places like southern South America and Australia bask in increasing daylight and warmer temperatures.

The exact day and time of the equinoxes vary each year because the Earth wobbles ever so slightly on its axis which affects the date and time of the equinoxes and seasons.

August in Review: A Month Of Temperature Swings

CLEVELAND -- August 2009 will go down in the weather history books as a little warmer and drier than normal.

That's the finding from the National Weather Service in Cleveland in their monthly climate report for August.

Temperatures swung from a steamy high of 93 degrees on August 9th to a chilly morning low of 48 degrees to end the month on August 31st.

The average daily high was 80.7 degrees with an average morning low of 64.2 degrees, giving us a bump of 2.3 degrees above normal for the whole month.

Although 3.52" of rainfall fell in the rain gauge at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, tha amount was slightly below normal for the month (-.17 inches). The greatest 24 hour rainfall occurred August 28th through 29th with 1.55" of rain, when a heavy area of thunderstorms moved through the area.

A least a trace of rainfall was recorded on 13 of 31 days this year.
