Toys for Tots turns down talking Jesus dolls
They could've had 4,000 talking Jesus dolls, just in time for the holiday season. But Toys for Tots is taking a pass. Read the story
What do you think? Should Toys for Tots have accepted the donation?

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I thought we were returning to using "Merry Christmas!" Besides, if the "non-believers" don't like them they can always "re-gift" the dolls to "believers." Or, to a church or orphanage.
The point of christmas is to honor CHRIST. it is almost tacky if they do not give out the jesus dolls. if the families do not want the jesus dolls, they can simply give it away.
If you look up the definition of Christmas, it is "the annual festival of the Christian church commemorating the birth of Jesus: celebrated on December 25"
How ignorant and selfish of the Toys for Tots program to not accept an offering of 4,000 Jesus dolls!
The children on the receiving end of these toys are not hoping for the best and greatest gifts this season -- they are hoping for ANY gift and to be remembered!
I agree with Toys For Tots, and support their decision to refuse the dolls. They are a subtle form of religious propaganda aimed at children. I firmly support the principle of freedom of religion, but implicit in that principle is freedom from religion.
I think that the whole reason for Christmas is the celebration of Jesus Christ our savior. If someone doesn't believe in that then they shouldn't celebrate Christmas at all.
Yes.. they should have accepted the dolls in question. The dolls could have been funneled thru the "Salvation Army", if no other way. The Salvation Army deals with thousands of needy children each and every day. Plus the "Pump House Ministries" in Ashland, Ohio would have found good homes for the dolls thru their outreach. Sounds like the higher ups in the 'Toys for Tots' are going the way of our government and trying to wipe out our Lord and Savior. WAKE UP PEOPLE.
Toys for Tots should have taken the donation. People, "non-believers" or not, should be greatful for the gift, no matter what kind of toy they are receiving.
The toys should have been excepted
this is AMERICA,I severed my Country, I am tired of these non believers, this Country was built under GOD, If People don't like ie then leave it
Isn't it ironic to say the least that Toys for Tots (which according to their website "brings the joy of Christmas" to needy children) is afraid that these dolls would offend nonbelievers??? HELLO!!!! Christmas is to celebrate the birth of CHRIST!!! If the family is not of the Christian faith, then I guess they wouldn't be celebrating Christmas!!!!!
Everyone is so political nowdays. Not even sure the is really America anymore. So , my personal view is no they did no wrong. If they took them and gave them out, chances are someone would have received one and would have been offended. And sisnce they didnt take them, well see there still being bashed for it so it seem to be a now win situation!!! Tots for tots is a great and meaning full charity. They do so much for so many, they should not even be judged or questioned for trying to do the right thing. Is this really America???
To turn down the Jesus dolls is defeating the purpose of celebrating Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birthday and to be thankful for life. It shouldn't be just about gifts. It would be outrages for anyone deny an offer of that amount. People should be thankful for anything if their children do not have.
thanks,
Melissa Santiago of Lorain
I dont think anyone who does not have some believe in Jesus would be celebrating christmas! The toys are for childern who dont have much. Take them and leave them unraped for the parents to make that call. This may be the only chance to bring something like this into their home. I think it would do us all good to hear some bible verses
Of course the doll should have been accepted. Christmas is a holiday for Christians, who all believe in Jesus. Why would you send Christmas gifts to a family who is not going to be celebrating the holiday representing the birth of our Lord and Savior?
If one must insist on holding to the strict definition of things such as "Christmas", then isn't it a violation of church-state seperation to have this as a recognized federal holiday? No, and I'll tell you why. Because Christmas has transcended its religious beginnings to become a cultural celebration of peace. Toys for Tots did what was in the best interest of the group that they serve... children. Reading the posts made so far, it seems that the other respondants seem to have forgotten this, too busy being wrapped-up in their own self-righteous fervor. The holidays can be a time for joy and happiness regardless of your religious affiliation. It seems sad to me that people would want to diminish that joy for kids who have so little just to push their own agenda. Please take a moment and try to imagine yourself in the place of a child with very little and not a christian. Or, better yet, how would you feel as a chistian child with nothing if a charitable organization gave you a symbol of another faith as your only gift for the holiday season? Kids just want to be happy, and that's what Toys for Tots is trying to do. How selfish can some people be to want to ruin that?
Since when is Jesus being turned away at Christmas. Isn't our country a matter of choice, freedom of speech and free will? There may be children out there who not only believe as I do but would love to have one of those beautiful dolls. The point of Christmas is Christ's birth and saying Merry Christmas as we have always done for centuries. Let the children make the decision as to whether they want them or not. Sandy
Toys for Tots is taking away people's right to hear God's word and choose to believe for themselves. John 10:27-30 27 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand 30 I and my Father are one"
Pay close attention to the ROOT word: CHRISTmas!!
CHRISTmas! Toys for Tots gives toys to children for CHRISTmas! Why would a Jewish or Muslim family go to Toys for Tots?
They should have been accepted but given to children who are Christian. We cannot force religious beliefs upon others. To those of you who are upset by the "non-believers", how would you feel if the dolls were of a Rabbi or a Muslim? Christmas may exist because of religion but the spirit of the holiday belongs to the children.
NO. As a Marine Corps Veteran who works on Toys for Tots (Medic)I say no again.
If Toys for Tots is only about Christmas and giving toys to Christians, there's nothing wrong with accepting a donation of Jesus dolls. The story seems to indicate, however, that Toys for Tots distributes toys to Jewish and Muslim children for their holidays. As a Jew I know this is a Christian country, but I'm so tired of Christians who just don't "get it," that we don't want to be forever pestered by your Christian proselytizing propaganda.
Christmas is ALL about CHRIST and the birth of JESUS! Thank you for the story - I know who I WON'T be donating to - this year or any year after.
We're a nice Catholic family and we're active in our church and attend every week. We try to keep Christmas Christ centered. But even I think a talking Jesus doll is a bit strange. I don't think my children would be very excited to find one under the tree. And I question the motives of the company manufacturing such a toy.
Plus, although our family tries to keep Christmas Christ centered, I'm realistic enough to know that, to most people, Christmas is NOT a religious holiday in this country. There's a religious aspect to it for most people, but it's largely a commercial holiday.
Christmas long ago went away from purely being a christian tradition (hence all the elves, reindeer, and the millions of dollars we spend on it every year...) I totally support Toys for Tots. How disappointing to a child to receive a talking Jesus doll instead of a new truck or something fun; like a TOY to play with. Just furthering the agenda of shoving religion down others' throats...
I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE TOYS FOR TOTS. I HAVE BEEN A SUPPORTER OF THEM FOR YEARS. I WILL FIND A DIFFERENT GROUP THAT DOES "NOT" HAVE A PROBLEM HONORING CHRIST.
The whole point of Christmas is to honor the birth of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I think Toys for Tots needs to remember the true meaning of Christmas.
Personally I think toys for tots was right on the money with their decision.
They chose the lesser of 2 evils..........I would much rather them turn down the donation now instead of seeing an article around Christmas: Toys for tots gives Jesus doll to Muslim or Jewish child.
Either way they went, someone would have had something to say........
I will take those dolls from them. My family for the past 34 years has done a CHRISTMAS Party for the children at St. Augustine Catholic Church, the deaf, the blind and kids from the West 14th St area in Cleveland, Ohio and we do not ask what religion they are or ask to see a paystub or w-2 I feel that if Fr. Joe or Sr. Corita has sent them then they are in need. I beg for money so that I can purchase 600 gifts for this party.. It will be on Dec 3, 2006 at 1 pm. feel free to contact me and we will make arrangements to get these dolls. I am very low on donations and also 350 gifts short. God Bless You and your staff for making everyone aware of what is going on regarding the word "CHRISTMAS" and yes it does have CHRIST up front and I am not ashamed of it, we all need to be more like CHRIST and a lot more Christian. Debbie Korce
I do agree with Alex, it's all about Jesus anyways! If a family was to receive a Jesus doll, they should be happy others are trying to help.. It's the idea that counts, People can't be picky now! That's like saying a boy gets a G.I. Joe, but hates them; what should we do? Take lists? That's ridiculous...
I think the talking Jesus dolls should be accepted. If it weren't for Jesus there would be no Christmas! Part of being a christian is to spread the "word" and it would be great to do this by having a jewish or muslim recieve the doll! Bette Divis
What about the ones being offended by NOT receiving the dolls? Maybe a family would have enjoyed the Jesus speaking doll. Why not just take them and IF your offended give it away what's the big deal? People we need to WAKE UP and stop ALLOWING businesses and POLITICALLY CORRECT AGENDAS STRIP and STEAL OUR BELIEFS and RIGHTS away from us, and that means BACKING up your stance by NOT shopping at places that fund or go against Christianity and Americas traditional values and or American traditions ( Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, The Pledge Of Allegiance, English as OUR language etc..) that we hold dear to us, if we don't FIGHT hard and STRONG now while we still have something to fight for, I can almost GUARANTEE we will not have ANYTHING left to fight for and we will have only OURSELVES to blame!
unreal!!!!!!!!
Hurray for Those who understand the spiritual awarness in this country! This has nothing to do with "non believers, this has to be a controll issue with certain religions folk! Just because they are free does not mean everyone should have one. I am a Christian, and do not want my Grandchildren to be fed this propaganda!
Yes, someone might be offended by these dolls that say bible verses. Give these dolls to me. I'll distribute them to the girls who attend my in-school, after-school bible clubs in the public elementary schools of Greater Cleveland. They will make a lot of girls happy for Christmas and no one will be offended.
We all understand the origins of Christmas, but it's obviously more than just the celebration of Christ at this point. And there are some that celebrate other holidays at this time, not just Christmas. You can call me a "non-believer", but I still celebrate Christmas, with gifts. And to those that like to read into writings from 200 years ago that our country was built on "God", do some research, the country was built on the opportunity for RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. It's amazing the crazy thoughts that people can have when it comes to religion.
toys for tots has decided to give away the dolls i heard the news yesterday on wcfr
Ya know this is sad! first of all the christians made there holiday "christmas" from the original holiday YULE! , and how can people set there and say why would muslims or another religion go to these programs? not only christians have needy children, hmm but maybe thats the way christians think now a days, personally i think they all need to wake up and find out where there religion came from and if they do they will see it is a fairly NEW religion compaired to others, and should NOT be considered the ONLY religion! and if they think it should be then it just proves how wrong they truely are! NEVER FORGET THE BURNING TIMES!!!!
