Your say: Local doctor sacrifices dog during sales demonstration

A neurosurgeon at the Cleveland Clinic induced a brain aneurysm on a dog to demonstrate a medical device to salespeople.

What are your thoughts? Did the doctor go too far?

I'm appalled! The doctor needs to be disciplined accordingly--perhaps some "demonstration" on him might be a fair punishment! Let's hope the poor dog is finally at peace...

World Class Care, right? Sad thing is people in this city/region will still hold that place, and those arrogant sons of b1tches in high esteem. Serves you all right, and you should not be shocked.

The fact that they did this at the Clinic doesn't surprise me. Was this one of the devices that they have a vested interest in? How much was this "animal vendor" paid? Also..wasn't the clinic in trouble years ago about doing testing on animals or something along those lines? The Clinic has turned into nothing but a multi-million dollar money machine!

This is outrageous. It wasn't stated in the broadcast what the machinery was designed to do but obviously it wasn't to save a life after the aneurysm was induced.

I think the Dr. was very right.

Sales people need to know what they are selling. Doing on a dog or a rabbit or a monkey, for the advance in helping people.

They are to many dogs and to many cats. To many for people to adopt. I am a animal lover also and if my grandchildren heard me say this would be upset with me.
That is my comments. People come first.

From your news cast, the doctor followed all the procedure except for waiting for approval, which was wrong. But as far as doing this to save human lives in the future, I find no fault in the doctor, and if more animal testing can save more human lives, please leave the doctors alone!

I am horrified that a doctor at a well known hospital would do this to a dog during a sales demonstration! It's one thing if it's part of "necessary" research to save human lifes(which I still don't like), but during a sales demo? What was he thinking? I rescue dogs for a German shepherd rescue, and I am just horrified. That poor dog. I've also been in sales for 15 years, and would never let anyone go to such extremes! Please announce his name so rescuers never release a dog to him.

I have the utmost respect for Dr. Robert White, a brilliant surgeon who has saved many, many lives. I am an animal lover, but I know & understand that it is necessary to use animals to perfect a life saving procedure on a human being.

I am horrified, however, that an animal was "sacrificed" for a "sales" pitch. I don't believe this was necessary. I think that disciplinary action is appropriate.

i think that testing on animals is very wronge! the aniamal was most likly in pain while this was happening and that is just crule. i think that this doctor should be fired and sent to jail for aniamal abuse! what person would do that to an animal. how would he like it if someone killed him just to show how to use an new tool?...mabey we should just so he knows how it feels!!! the cleveland clinic should fire him ASAP and he should be sent to jail!

I see nothing wrong with what the Dr. did. Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice an animals life in order to test or demonstrate a piece of equipment that will save human lives. Even though I am against cruelty to animals and love them, they are not the same as human life and as long as the animal did not suffer and everything was humanely done, I don't see it as a problem.

People who have no regard for animals have no heart. This story just confirms my opinion of the surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic and their "God complex." The doctor involved should at least pay a fine, but jail time would be more of a just punishment. I agree with the person who said that a "demonstration" should be performed on him for sales training!

How heartless and cruel. To use an inocent animal for the financial gain of a doctor during a sales pitch crosses the ethical line. The Clinic should not treat this lightly. As a nurse and pet owner I was sickened and this only reinforces my already bad opinion of them.

I find it hard to believe that a neurosurgeon would defy the Clinic's policy and perform such a horrific act for a group of sales people! I would hope that more than a class in humanity would be instituted and this physician be held accountable for this unacceptable act. There are reasons policies are instituted and I wonder if the Clinic would have approved of this demonstration? This demonstration wasn't to collect further research data to save a human life, it was done as side show for sales people!!!

We would all be shocked and horrified if that " mutt" was your best friend. And maybe it could have been someone's best friend - I guess it will never get the chance now. Why do people continue to use animals, especially dogs for medical experiments. Haven't dogs at least proved their value to us enough to get more respect than that? I mean, they help the blind and handicapped to live a better quality life, they help rid our streets of drugs and crime, they give love and companionship to the lonely, and much more. My God people, at least have a heart.

Whoever you are Doctor, please read the words of Chief Seattle (1854) and then contemplate the slippery slope the Cleveland Clinic is on.

" . . . So we will consider your offer to buy our land.
If we decide to accept, I will make one condition - the white man must treat the beasts of this land as his brothers.

I am a savage and do not understand any other way.

I have seen a thousand rotting buffaloes on the prairie, left by the white man who shot them from a passing train.

I am a savage and do not understand how the smoking iron horse can be made more important than the buffalo that we kill only to stay alive.

What is man without the beasts?
If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of the spirit.
For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man.
All things are connected...."

And another comment on this passage from a poem I read.

"If all the beasts were gone, who would walk with us on the Seventh Day".

Since science has recently shown that dogs are as intelligent as the average 5 to 6 year old child, and being a believer of the adage that ones compassion towards any living being should in no way correlate to its intelligence, I am bothered by animal experimentation these days what with the vast information ALREADY accumulated. At what point do the "diminishing returns" of incremental information still warrant the suffering of an animal so that a 79 year old man can live another couple months? Some say there are too many cats & dogs. Well, if you take a look around this planet there are too many people, too! To all of the people who dump an animal at the pound with an unrealistic belief that "someone will take 'em", please remember this could be YOUR dog's fate.

I was appalled to hear this story tonight. I was born with a congenital heart condition that requires ongoing cardiac monitoring as well as two open heart operations one of which was performed at the Cleveland Clinic. While I appreciate the cutting edge research that provides the renowned medical care of the Clinic I am also a devout animal lover and definitely think this doctor went too far. To sacrafice an animal in the name of making a sale is irreprehensible. As a continued "customer" of the Clinic I will be following this story very closely and demand that this doctor be appropriately disciplined for his callous actions. As a world renowned medical facility the Clinic has a duty and an image to uphold and as they have stated that this doctor was unauthorized to perform this "sales sacrifice" they should let the world know that this blatent violation of the rules will not be tolerated. If instead they decide to look the other way I may decide to look for medical advice somewhere else.

This doctor needs to either be fired or severely punished at the bare minimum. This time it was a dog, what policy will he or she decide is beneath him or her to follow on their next decision which may directly impact a human life? If a demonstration must be offered to sales people in order for them to have the capacity to sell this product, then video-tape the final test during the research process and utilize that legitimately approved animal test. Aside from this obvious, practical yet astute, let's think-outside-of-the-box solution, the Cleveland Clinic had better consider the mere fact this doctor took it upon their self to be above hospital policy and ignore procedure. How embarrassing for The Clinic should they choose to turn tail and back the doctor. With a world renowned establishment such as The Clinic, let's hope they use their well educated brains to prove to the public they won't be made a mockery of by one of their arrogant self exalting employees. I reiterate, while representing the Cleveland Clinic this doctor acted outside of policy. This disastrous decision resulted in the loss of life in an inhumane manner. As a form of community justice, too bad stoning isn't still in practice.

I am absolutely appalled at this doctor's behavior. His name should be released as I certainly would not want to be his patient. There should be ongoing unannounced inspections by animal rights groups and the state of Ohio to the Clinic labs where any testing is done with animals. What else goes on behind these closed doors?
Where were these salespeople attending the meeting? How in heaven's name did they condone this man's behavior?
As far as the dog vendor his name and photo should be released by Channel 3 so that area shelters, pounds, rescue groups and the like do not allow him/her to adopt animals.

The Cleveland Clinic needs to be more responsible and look to the works of some of their colleagues for more effective practices, such as the works of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). PCRM is an organization that promotes preventive medicine, conducts clinical research (not animal research) and encourages higher standards for ethics and effectiveness in research.

As stated from in an article in “Good Medicine” from PCRM, Animal tests do not predict results in humans. We heard it too many times before that that a new treatment almost magically heals spinal cord injuries in mice or cures cancer in rats, fail miserably in human patients. More than 90 percent of drugs that appear safe in animal tests fail in human studies. More than half of all approved drugs will be withdrawn or relabeled for serious or lethal effects in humans.

If Cleveland Clinic claims to be such a leader in the medical industry then they should start to expand their medical horizons and realize that animal testing can prove to more dangerous to humans and move beyond animal tests toward better testing methods.

Thank you so much WKYC for reporting on this story! Let's hope that it provokes discussion and prompts action.

The death of this dog in the name of science is just another sickening example of our society's blatant disregard and disrespect for living creatures. Can you imagine the terror this dog experienced before it was killed?

I understand that the victim was obtained from an animal broker. It is highly likely that the broker got the dog from an overcrowded shelter, an unethical breeder, or through an advertisement for a "free dog".

If you are as disgusted by this case of animal cruelty as I, please take action. Examples of what you can do are: write letters of protest to the Cleveland Clinic, volunteer or make a donation to local or national animal -realted charities, or even boycott the Cleveland Clinic.

Just a few examples of worthy charities are The Animal Protective League and various no-kill/ foster home rescue groups and shelters, as well as charities working to end this kind of torture such as The National Anti-Vivisection Society, PETA, and Physcians for Resposible Medicine.

Most importantly, have your pet spayed/neutured and adopt a shelter animal when looking for a companion.

Don't allow another homeless dog suffer needlessly.

As an RN at one of Ohio's major medical centers, I believe it is imperative that the medical equipment sales reps fully understand the equipment, how it works and the risks of using it. Often, the highly trained sales reps are the sole source of training for the physicians being introduced to new equipment, procedures and medications. These same people that are screaming "animal cruelty" are the same people that would be first to criticize and to bring lawsuits against doctors and nurses when their loved ones do not have a full recovery after a procedure. Would they prefer that the sales reps, & in turn their physicians, learn on Grandma, their husband or newborn child?

I'd rather see an animal tested on than a human. I love animals but humans come first. There are so many dogs and cats that the humane society ends up putting them to sleep. Therefore, it's better if the animal can advance medical care for humans than to be destroyed just because there are too many of them. I don't want it killed for sales purposes but if that is what it takes to save human lives, so be it.

So what if the dog was ill and would probably die from this, the idea that they took his life just so they could show this during a 'sales demo?' What is this world coming too. We kill innocent creatures for our own good, and then we take the lives of innocent babies before they are born too, again ensure we adults live forever!

Get a life people, the world doesn't evolve around just us!

I understand that the general public feels that a dog is inferior to a human and therefore can justify doing such an experiment to 'help mankind'. But who determined that. In some countries cows are sacred yet we consume how many millions a year here in America. Continueing on that angle, I do believe in God and nowhere in the Bible did it say the dog was put here for us to experiement on for our 'well being'. Noah didn't save man when he went on the ark, he saved the animals. They only kill what they need to eat to survive, we merely do experiments to live longer. The other angle scientifically will be In a hundred years, this period of time will go down in the history books as humans acting as primitive as the caveman in medicine. Lets hope we learn alot faster! Thanks for opportunity to be heard.

I am very appalled and heart broken by what happend to this innocent "Creature of Christ". My only consolation is that the dog is now with his loving creator...running and playing in beautiful green pastures. As for the Cleveland Clinic, the doctor, sales reps, and manufacturere of the "device" you are ALL DISGUSTING! Each and everyone of you should have your faces and names published, and be charged with Animal Cruelty. Better yet, subject ALL of YOU to the same testing!

I am a Medical Sale Rep. Had I been there, I would have grabbed the dog and ran out. YOU sales people are ALL gutless!!

Remember one thing...VENGENCE IS MINE SAYS THE LORD! God sees EVERYTHING and HE knows who YOU are! You will ALL get YOUR just PUNISHMENT in due time. AMEN!!

I have never been so saddened in my entire life. Does everything have to be about money without consideration for the innocent. This poor dog just wanted love and affection and the doctor gave him death for a sales pitch. This is most discussing and all I can say is I would not go to the clinic for nothing. I have spent my entire life trying to save any animal that I can and I do understand that you need research but this is beyond research. I am sickened and saddened at the same time. If you can kill an innocent animal just to show a bunch of salesman how a product works I would never trust you to care for a patient again. You are one sick person with no regards for life. And the shelter who handed the dog over to you should also be shut down. These are the time to have no kill shelters in place everywhere and using animals for financial gain is outrageous. May you pay for your actions when you meet your maker

World Class Care? The Cleveland Clinic almost killed my mother more than 30 years ago. Unfortunatly back then it was not common practice to sue a hospital or their doctors. If it was, I would own my own island in the South Pacific right now. I would never step foot in that hospital. And now they find it acceptable to kill animals in the name of "medicine??" This is more pure GREED on the part of the Directors and the doctors. Shame on them! I steer everyone I know away from the Clinic based on their sheer arrogance that they are the "best." They are nothing more than over-educated cocky doctors who actually believe their own press. How about asking my mother who still suffers from the mistakes of their "world class care?" Frankly I am not surprised they would do something this horrific. This situation begs the question, "when are they going to start demonstrating on humans and think it is okay in the name of medicine???"

How much did the doctor stand to make on this? They do this with people too. Last year they had to admit that were putting stuff in people that they were getting money for. Not a surprise coming from that place. They won't do anything to the doctor and will chalk the whole thing up to paperwork problems. Again.

I AM TERRIFIED THAT EVEN THE CLEVELAND CLINIC HAS YET TO LEARN THAT THE RESULTS FROM NONHUMAN RESEARCH KILLS/DAMAGES RATHER THAN HELPS HUMANS. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE NO MORAL RIGHT TO DO THIS TO ANOTHER LIVING BEING WHO GOD GAVE ALL CAPAPCITY FOR FEAR AND PAIN; THE DESIRE FOR FREEDOM AND LIFE, JUST AS GOD GAVE TO HUMANS.

The more you learn about animal research, the more you realize that it has done more harm than good. Tests results from animals cannot be extrapulated to humans. Animals continue to be used because it provides funding for universities, NOT because it benefits humans.

It's too bad that the laws of reciprocity don't apply to human-animal trangressions like this. If they did, one could imagine a prison where animal abusers would make amends by themselves becoming medical "research subjects" for the betterment of medical understanding. It also makes practical sense since animal models are useless in predicting human safety and efficacy. Over 99% of drugs that are found effective on non-human animals never make it to market, because they either fail during human clinical trials, or the drugs harm humans in those trials.

I work at the Cleveland Clinic and while I don't agree with the Doctors decision in what he did I'm very upset and frustrated at all of your comments that say we don't provide world class care, what do you expect from the Cleveland Clinic etc. If some of you would do your research and educate yourselves, you would see that we do provide world class care and it's because of us and other healthcare institutions that you all are alive today, If we didn't exsist and I'm not just saying the Cleveland Clinic I'm speaking for all of the healthcare institutions out there, what would all of you do if faced with a life threatining illness or disease?? Before making snap judgements and accusing of us of being insensitive to women and such for instance "Is the quack in question a middle easterner? They have no respect for women, why not animals?
What's wrong with the sales people? Were they afraid to stop the almighty doctor? They all make me sick. A doctor killed a friend of mine and was not held responsible due to the good old doc network. Pill and procedure pushers many times do more harm than good. They always think they are above reproach. Glad White's retired, one less egomaniac on the loose. As a Cleveland Clinic Employee, animal lover, owner and activist, I cannot find words to describe the way this news makes me feel. I am more than outraged and saddened. I believe in an eye for an eye. And this so-called doctor should be punished to the fullest extent. But that won't be much since the state of Ohio is at the bottom of the list for Animal Rights. In this state, you can get away with murder, which is what this doctor did, when it comes to Animal Cruelty. In this day of technology marvels, this was the only way to demonstrate this device? I don't believe it. This man is a poor excuse for a doctor and needs to have a "demonstration" performed on him or one of his family members-in Public Square-where all can attend!! What's wrong with using cadavers or death row inmates? Our tax dollars are only keeping them fed and alive.

This is absolutely sickening. I can not believe that in this day and age that some people still think it is necessary to test on animals. When I heard this story I became so angry and thought maybe I should I put a protest sign on my dog and walk the line at the Cleveland Clinic. To all involved with this demonstration you should feel ashamed of yourselves. To the doctor who did it, maybe you should take a walk through the APL shelter and see what abuse does to innocent animals. Animals have no voice and you clearly took advantage. But, I can tell you that all animals feel pain! I, also hope someone is investigating the "animal vendor". They too need to be punished and closed down. Remember, what goes around comes around.

UNBELIEVEABLE. The Cleveland Clinic needs to be fined and warned that something like this will NEVER happen again. The Dr. needs to have his name published, his license suspended and be charged with animal cruelty. Lastly, yes, everyone would like to find out who released this dog and who it was released too. That person should alse be charged. I work in animal rescue and I can tell you that animals have so many qualities that we humans could learn from. I am in agreement, if you need something to experiment on, pull someone from death row. Those people have commited a crime, dogs have done nothing but have been born more than likely because of an irresponsible human.

One of the many reasons I will never go to the clinic for any type of procedure. What a sickening display of arrogance and greed on the part of the surgeon.

I'll bet the device he was demonstrating was one that he developed. Maybe he should use a family member of his for the next demonstration instead of an innocent animal. To have done this for no other reason than to demonstrate the device to a bunch of slimy sales people is the worst of all. Fire the surgeon and anyone else who knew about this ahead of time and sever all ties with the sales people who attended.

If the clinic cannot be trusted to treat animal life with dignity then it certainly cannot be trusted to do so with human life.

The physician was not "pithing products" she/he was teaching a team of sales persons how to properly train other medical staff personnel. Brain aneurysms are a very serious complex disease that very few centers can treat adequately in the US. The sales persons often train staff nurses, techs, PAs, physicians on how to adequately use the devices in actual procedures. If the sales people do not know all of the little intricate details of the product then they are putting patients at risk. Adequately training a sales team who teaches medical profesionals daily in such a terrible life-threatening disease state is vital. Animals used in the training labs are always under anesthesia and suffer no pain. If you had a brain aneurysm being treated you would want staff members who were adequately trained, good chances were that they were trained by a sales rep!

They are not going to punish this doctor to much of any extent, you all MUST remember this doctor is bringing in MONEY for the Clinic. And by using a new product to advance technology on resolving a problem?? The Clinic will not put a stop to that. Not when they can be put in the "high light" of publising a new way of technology. I believe the Clinic gets away with alot, including MURDER, not to only ANIMALS, but to humans also. I am sure that there is alot, we the public NEVER hears. As for the ANIMALS, whether family pets or homeless Ohio is the WORST STATE period for ANIMAL LAWS !!! I don't understand why this state can't make it better for them. Anyone that doesn't find this appalling doesn't care about life in general. Yes animals are euthanized every day in pounds. But what I find appalling is that fact that they forced an aneurysmn to occur forcing the dog to suffer regardless if it was under anesthesia. This is a whole different ball game then just putting a dog down. There were other options. Not just getting a random mutt for 3 dollars and forcing it to suffer and then putting it down. That dog could have been adopted into a family that would have loved it. Not sacrafice it for a stupid sale.

(He'll be under anesthesia so he wont' feel a thing-right?) Moreover, instead of inflicting undo harm to a creature of God, (and DOG is "God" spelled backwards) why not test on the bastards on death row who are guilty of molesting/killing women and children? I think that the prospective buyers of this product were also at fault!!! How could they stand by and let this poor thing be killed? The Clinic needs to show compassion for this animal and levy some hefty fines, or fire this cold harted doctor. I hope I never have to see him as a physician, I could be too afraid of becoming a sales demonstration. What is interesting to me is that so many people are quick to say how unlike we are to the animal kingdom, yet somehow they are good enough and so much LIKE US that we will perform cruel and painful experiments on them. If they are in ANY way like us, we should NOT be doing this. And they ARE like us - they feel emotions like fear & loss and certainly feel PAIN!

Humans do have one thing that it appears animals do not: MORALS! We must treat all of creation with compassion and kindness - it is our moral obligation.

THERE HAVE BEEN STRAY DOGS THAT HAVE ATTACKED CHILDREN AND ADULTS AND HAVE EVEN KILLED, I AM SURE THEN IT WOULD BE OK TO PUT THE DOG TO SLEEP. YA, WAS IT THE MOST TASTEFUL THING TO DO? NO, BUT WHEN YOU SUFFER FROM THE SAME THING AND THE HOSPITAL APPLIES THE "NEW" TECHNOLOGY TO HELP TREAT YOU, I AM SURE THAT YOU WOULD BE GREATFUL. EVERYONE NEEDS TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. Appalling and inhumane what the surgeon did to that helpless animal. There is no need to test on animals in the first place let alone a demonstration for sales people, this is horific and cruel and shows that the surgeon is more interested in promoting a money making idea that treating a helpless animal inhumanely and unethicial since he didn't have permission in the first place. Would you let this surgeon operate on your family member with knowing he lacks concious and remorse after punishing an animal.

11:35 AM

Although I am extremely upset that this physician did not wait for the proper approval from the clinic, I'm sure he will be dealt with accordingly. What people need to understand first and foremost, is that with out the use of animal testing (and perhaps demonstrations), we as medical professionals would be forced to essentially "experiment" on humans. How many of you want your family members to undergo experimental procedures with the "hopes" that everything will be ok. Animal testing allows the medical community to learn and more importantly, save the lives of the people we love. Every life saving surgical procedure we are capable of is a direct result of the fact that they have been successfully carried out on animals. As upsetting as it may be, it is a neccessary evil as far as saving human life is concerned. An animal lover myself, it does upset me, however, knowing that one day my loved ones may be spared their life via the sacrifice of a precious animal's life is of some comfort. The general public needs to know, that these animals, when procedures are carried out on them, are treated with the utmost respect and dignity. They are very closely monitored, they are given general anesthesia, and are humanely euthanised once the procedure is complete. These animals are HEROS, and tragic as it may seem, they give their lives so that we may go on to live ours.

"Appalling and inhumane what the surgeon did to that helpless animal." Agreed, it's too bad so many people consume animal products, food animals have a lifestory not unlike that poor dog.

"There is no need to test on animals in the first place let alone a demonstration for sales people" It's true, other research shows that a vegetable based diet without animal products can meet your nutritional needs, I would argue eating them is just as cruel

"this is horific and cruel and shows that the surgeon is more interested in promoting a money making idea that treating a helpless animal inhumanely and unethicial since he didn't have permission in the first place." I think that the problem is inherent in that we view Humans as being 'superior' to Animals. Isn't it time we all started respecting eachother and became vegetarian?

"Would you let this surgeon operate on your family member with knowing he lacks concious and remorse after punishing an animal." I sure wouldn't, would you allow someone who does this same thing 3 times a day (usually) but then consumes the corpse to be your friend? A question worth researching I say.

Did he become a doctor for the money?? I believe he did the experiment to help himself, not mankind. Animals, all animals, are breathing, feeling beings. They are to many dogs and to many cats. To many for people to adopt. I am a animal lover also and if my grandchildren heard me say this would be upset with me.
That is my comments. People come first.

11:10 PM"

This view is grossly flawed by human ego. There are too many unwanted children, as well, too many for people to adopt because we would rather have designer babies from a tube or genetically selected from our own wombs. Disease and war are nature's population control. For those who feel otherwise, donate yourselves to the cause. If you feel so strongly about medical research, how about a little self-sacrifice? Animal research cannot be generalized to humans, and these animals don't volunteer their health, safety, or freedom for the sake of humans. Can we blame them, with the way we treat animals as disposable?

For those of you who feel humans are superior to all other living creatures, why use that against them? We should be protecting and nurturing these 'inferior' beasts with our knowledge and wisdom. Instead, we choose to exploit them for our own gain.

The doctor should lose his medical license. He will do this again. He just won't get caught the next time. Just because there is a lot of animals that need to be adopted does not mean we should start inducing them into a stroke and pain and then kill them. I hope the people that feel it is ok die and get reincarnated as a dog and this gets done to them. It is wrong, especially just to show sales people!!!!! The Dr. already knew how it should work, the sales people just bull-shit people anyway. This doctor needs fined or put in jail for a few months. It is wrong and unethical to take the law into their own hands. Just because they are doctors does not mean they are better than anyone else. Cleveland Clinic has gone down hill as far as I am concerned. They hire people from Egypt that can't even communicate and treat women terrible. One person commented that she/he would perfer a dr. that practiced on a dog, hello this was just to show sales people!! Something needs to be done or it will just continue. Dogs and Cats are creatures of God that feel pain and should not be used this way!! Practice on dead people intstead. a.d.

Some of you obviously didn't read the article correctly. He wasn't training doctors, he was training SALES PEOPLE. There is no excuse or argument for using a living animal for a sales demonstration. I imagine these sales people will not be using a live animal when they go to sell this thing to medical vendors, so I don't see how it was relavent. People do not always come first before animals, I know alot of animals I would save before a lot of people. This is the same freak who transplanted monkey heads in the 60's and I don't see any improvements in our lives that we can thank "monkey head transplanting" for. This is wrong!!! Killing another animal for gain of a human being is not right. We are not on this earth to better ourselves at the sake of another life. I don't care if it is an animal. This is about power and money. I hope someday I am around long enough to see this world change. Find another way not killing one life for another. It especially sickens me that it was for a sales demonstration. Animals are what life is all about. If we have to live a little less longer then that is what nature and the spirit of why we are here intended. I am so angry at all the abuse going on. Both the Clinic and the Doctor should be accountable. And I don't mean a slap on the wrist!!!!!

Finally some light is being shed on this disgusting behaviour! Sad to say, but animal testing/procedures are also being conducted in Akron hospitals as well! (From what I was told though, we can't hear the dogs cries because as soon as they recieve the animal, they sever the vocal cords so they cannot cry out) Of course, we won't see this advertised in their marketinf of "exceptional care and concern". Perhaps it is time that the public was informed about the cruelty that is taking place on a daily basis in these Akron and Cleveland area hospitals. Where are the investigators when we need them?

My wife, also, left the room as soon as she heard the lead-in. The fact that the doctor didn't wait for approval on this sickening sacrifice of a life shows A) that he/she knew that it wouldn't be approved, or B) shows that the CCF system doesn't work since obviously someone can kill an animal without approval. We are animal lovers and deciding that an animal's life is expendable for a SALES DEMONSTRATION sickens us.

it is very easy for us to prey on things weaker than us, animals, children, elderly, etc. Why don't we do some experiments on these researchers and see how they like it, hopefully that poor animal has passed through this life through the rainbow bridge free from us humans and the pain we have caused it..

I believe ALL creatures are equal in God's eyes. Man is supposed to take care of God's creatures, not destroy them. Doctors perform on animals more than you think. I used to work for a group of major Orthopaedic Surgeons in St. Louis, MO. They did HORRIBLE things to animals, and the things they did/do can haunt you. For example, they would purposely break the bones of animals just to fix them. Science should be advanced enough that we shouldn't have to do these things. Please understand, I'm not preaching. This is just what I feel. I'm not pressuring anyone to think what I think, I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Am I naive in thinking that doctors and nurses are being trained by experts, by technical specialists, by other doctors and not by sales people? Were any of these people doctors and nurses? And this wasn't training, merely a demonstration. And why would a clinic doctor be demo'ing for the sales staff of a company? Was he reimbursed? Does he have stock in the company? Are the doctors and resources of the clinic for sale? Do clinic doctors do demos on human patients for sales people? Someone needs to answer.

These sales organizations in medical device often are the only ones to train physicians and nurses on how to use surgical products. If the educational oppotunity bestowed upon these individuals helped save one life then it should not be condemned. I have no problem with utilizing an animal under anesthesia that normally would be put down to help save human lives.

I cannot condone killing the dog for a sales demonstration. Neither can I condone animal testing for cosmetics. I do support some animal testing for medical research. Where would humans be without it? So many wonderful cures and treatments, thanks to animals. PETA needs to back out of this, though. They are hipocrits of the highest degree. They kill animals by the thousands. And people that think they are helping them are donating millions of dollars. Find a local shelter or rescue and help them with your dollars. Check out this site for the truth about PETA. PetaKillsAnimals.com. If we don't start standing up to these AR fanatics (HSUS included) we will have no pets let alone food animals. THere are way too may laws being passed in the U.S. to make it too onerous and too expensive to own pets. Mandatory spay and neuter will remove all breeding dogs eventually. Puppies will be for the very rich only. Legislators are spending tons of time drafting laws to eliminate animal ownership instead of focusing on human needs. Wake up animal and pet lovers! The internet is great for researching these issues and propsed laws.

Without the "sales people" informing the doctors of this procedure many others will die from the same affliction. We are human beings that have the ability to learn and apply our knowledge for the advancement of mankind. Although this appears cruel on the surface, I ask that each of you examine this procedure from a less emotional perspective and understand that this is a scientific advancement that has the potential of savings many lives and that without the medical profession being aware of this product/procedure many other will die. These are medical professionals learning how an advancement/procedure works in order to promote a medical procedure to save lives, not used car salespersons or realtors selling you the product of the week.

I can hear it now just another nut case in favor of pro life. You are correct I believe in life for the unborn child as much as you believe in life for this dog.

I heard someone on tonbight's newscast say that God was not happy about this killing and I ask do you think that God is happy over the multitude of children who have been slaughtered because of convenience or maybe even to help save a another human life. What if this was us and he was performing this experiment on us and something went wrong. The animals have just as much as a right as we do. We develop systems to protect our ethics. When anyone crosses this line they should be punished. This is responsible societal culture. Otherwise we descend to the level of Nazi culture. They also deemed it acceptable to experiment on the weak.

PETA sent a letter to the Cleveland Clinic prior to this occuring, and they paid no regard to their plight. As a healthcare worker, I'm embarassed to be in this field. The MD and the Cleveland Clinic as a whole should be ashamed and embarassed. They have never been known for their caring nature, and this proves that fact. I sincerely hope that their selfishness has taught them a lesson.

Last year, the clinic fired a doctor for failing to disclose royalties device that he invented. In 2005 Dr.Cosgrove's relationship with a medical-device company and the clinic's role in a venture capital firm that invested in it were disclosed to be ethically questionable. This is just another example. And the clinic will deny that they have a financial interest in the device. Then why did he do it? To kill a dog? To teach the salesman of a company with NO affiliation with the clinic? Stick to teaching clinic doctors and residents and leave poor animals alone. And it wasn't teaching or training it was a sales demo!

This Dr. broke policy, did this without approval because he knew it wouldn't happen, and then pleads ignorance. With such disregard for policies, why wouldn't he be carefree with other regulations in place for our protection.I'm sure others at CCF knew what was going on. This was SALES reps. It's about the $, not saving human life. I do think METROHEALTH & UH will see an increase in Pt.'s now. My heart aches for the poor dog and hopefully he's with God and St. Francis.

The doctor should loose his license and they should both be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law as if it was a human they tourtered that poor dog. Humans have no right to believe we can treat other beings as any less than us. Any human that will hurt an animal will do the same to a human even a child. They are mentally unstable and need to be locked up or euthanized.

It's a sad commentary on our society where it is acceptable to kill millions of babies a year (okay, call it termination, or abortion), but people become outraged when an animal is harmed for medical testing.

MAYBE THE ABOVE MORON SHOULD VOLUNTEER HIM/HERSELF. THEN A HELPLESS ANIMAL WHO HAS NO VOICE

Modern Medicine as we know it would not be possible without the use of animal test subjects. If the public is so opposed to animal testing, they should stop taking all prescription drugs because every product on the market was once tested on 1,000s of animals. Furthermore, would you anti-lab animal testing folks be willing to have medications and procedures tested on YOU and your family instead of on animals? Mary Beth Sweetland [of P.E.T.A.] certainly would not do such a thing. I wonder how many prescriptions she takes a day...

I think that if we want to be able to achieve advancements in medicine, it is necessary to test new ideas; we have two options: animals or humans. The purpose of the testing is to create a longer lifespan for humankind by finding ways to cure medical problems. I don't think people should automatically jump when someone uses an animal to try and create a better life for the public.

The issue in this case is NOT whether or not animals should be used for research or teaching, but that there is ALREADY in place a LEGAL and HUMANE guideline for such use, and this doctor violated BOTH! It is another case of doctors believing they are above the law, and above the process, that MUST be followed. This doctor's disrespect of the process is the whole reason that people worry about the abuse and waste of life in an effort toward "the greater good" in medicine. Let's hope that this blatantly arrogant doctor will not be allowed to be above the just consequence for such a violation. How sad that a poor animal has to die to further the career of a doctor and the hype of a hospital. Doctors care more about their bank accounts than people these days.
Let's face it, if you don't have insurance you are not treated as well. First question when you walk into a doctor's office or hospital is who's your insurer. So the killing of a poor defenseless dog wouldn't faze them if it meant more money and hype.
An investigation should be done both of the doctor and hospital.
someone had to know that animals were being used for such purposes, or did he sneak the dog in? I DOUBT IT.

Well once again the almighty Cleveland Clinic has been caught at something. Seems so sad it took something like this. Whats not to say the higher ups didn't approve this sick demostration. But since they got caught they will deny it. Just like the cover up of the treatment of women from there foreign Doctors. Complaints from paitients are laughed at behind closed doors, and from staff members nothing is done. I know I worked for a Clinic hospital. It's so sad the city of Cleveland puts this place on a pedastool. But like everything else The Clinic will get away with it like they do everything else. investigators should not annouce a visit to give them time to clean things up. If they dont give a dam about there doctors treating people inhumane why will they care about a dogs life. Seems to me instead of worry about McDonalds selling food, or smoking on there property, or having only healthy food in the vending machines they should be looking at the way these doctors act. Oh and by the way have you drove past a clinic hospital and seen all the employees out in scrubs smoking bet they just walk back into the or taking the germs with them. I wouldnt't let the Cleveland Clinic work on my dog. Hope you all think about it and go somewhere else. so sad the city has to have its name on it. This has really upset me. I am not preaching, but for those who believe in the bible, read the first few chapters. God created animals before humans! We were put here to care for them. We kill the deer because of over population, if we were not constantlay developing on THEIR land, they would have room to live. Cities have passed laws that you cannot feed the birds, and other wildlife, because people do not want them in their precious landscaped yards. Who gave humans the right to feel they are superior over animals!
I also have to agree with what another post said, there are so many people on death row, or imprisioned for life, that we the taxpayer support. We house them, feed them, educate them, give them free recreation. Maybe if they were used for these experiments instead, our crime rate would go down! I know I would think twice about commiting a crime, If I knew what happened to that poor dog, could happen to me!!!!

I have numerous medical problems with a device in my head that has saved my life. This
device was tested on animals, even dogs and cats, before it was used on humans and these
animals suffered and died in the process. This is where I am supposed to say that I am
grateful for animal research. I am not going to say that. I will say that I am grateful for
medical research but not animal research. Making animals, especially dogs and cats,
suffer in so many different ways and then die for me and what I need to stay alive does not
make me feel like a good person. It is selfish, arrogant, convenient, easy, and cruel to use
innocent animals rather then our God given nimds to solve problems we humans have.
We have become a selfish culture, taking what we want when we want and how we want
it. We are a culture of quick and easy solutions and methods. Those who cannot keep up
are the ones that are left behind, destroyed or blamed. The Innocents are paying the price
of this bullying culture. For me,animal research is partly why we have become so
insensitive to the suffering and problems of other humans. You start accepting dog and
chimp labs as normal human activity then ten years later you accept factory farms as
normal human activity and then ten years later you sacrifice a dog in front of a interactive
crowd for such an opportunistic reason as this was, then why should we be surprised that
homeless people are being beaten to death for fun in our streets? Its all connected, when
you make one easy the rest is even easier and we find that human suffering is acceptable
human activity, as long as it is not you doing the suffering.. Well guess what, I dont want
to be that way, even if I die instead. Some things are worse then dying--- like how you
live your life and what you condone. If anyone thinks for one minute this dog is the only
incident and its suffering was the only mistake then they are living under a rock, if you can
find a rock anymore. Humans kill animals ‘in the name of science’ constantly. We as a
society have ignored it, to our peril. Why is this incident an outrage but the dog labs in
every hospital in the country not an outrage? To me, both are sickening and show the
worst in humanity. The Cleveland Clinic is only sorry they got caught, not that it
happened. If they are really sorry then let them shut down their cat and dog labs, and
pledge to not outsource them either. Betcha they don’t. Betcha one doctor sitting under
a rock then don’t.

Since I don't know this doctor, I can't judge his motive. One thing I can comment on his his lack of judgement in not following the guidelines in place for such an event. If he knew that what he was doing was not following hospital protocol, he never should have completed this procedure. While it is true that we need medical advances, The Clinic's own stated policy would not have permitted this. If he could still do this, then they need to investigate why
he was able to obtain the space and opportunity to do such an appalling procedure. He is not existing in a vaccumn. If the sales people present their devices to the hospital surely they are aware of the policies and in my opinion are just as guilty as he is.
As a nurse I applaud the advances in medical devices but in no way do I support killing a living being to sell a device to sales people.

Using animals in research is a sad but necessary part of saving human life. Certainly if the rules were not followed correctly by the doctor, he should face disciplinary actions, but the Cleveland Clinic itself should not be looked down upon for using animals for biomedical research. As an animal lover and someone who has worked in animal research before, (yes those two statements don't seem to go together I know, but even research animals need people that love animals to take care of them, to ensure the laws and rules are upheld while they are in our care, to make sure their experience is as good and pain free as it can be, under the cirumstances). Anyone working in animal research would love for there to be a day when we don't have to use animals for research, but unfortunately, that day has not come. The human doctors need to perfect new procedures before they conduct them on people. People is a broad term, think of your grandmother, or god forbid your child. Wouldn't you rather have an animal humanely used to perfect the techniques rather than trying it on your family member for the first time? I would answer yes, this only being my opinion of course. It is important to note that most of the time these animals are anesthestised and on pain medication when these things are being done, or monitored closely for any signs of pain or distress if conscious tests are being done. These are LAWS, not suggestions, there is a whole commitee on site dedicated to deciding whether or not a procedure can take place before the animals can even be brought into the building. It broke my heart on a regular basis working with research animals but I could see the greater good and knew that I was doing my best to make sure their stay was comfortable and that they received the best care possible while I was with them. I just wish people wouldn't automatically jump to the conclusion that animal research is such an unthinkable, horrible act. These animals are used to perfect a surgical technique, develop a new cancer treatment, help to test a new vaccine or drug that could save someone's life, there are so many more examples that I could point out. Before I worked in animal research, I jumped to the same conclusion that most people do. I am so fortunate that I had the opportunity to work with these animals, for now I can share the REAL information about what goes on in biomedical research rather than being fed doctored pictures and inaccurate stories about research from groups such as PETA. aalas.org is a good website to explore the TRUE facts about animal research. This is the american association for laboratory animal science's website. I encourage all that are horrified by this story to at least read about the truth behind animal research. Again, I am an animal lover, anyone that knows me is aware of that, and I would LOVE for there to be the day when animal research is over, but until then, it is a sad but necessary part of saving human life.

Unfortunately, I believe that "trials" like this go on all the time without our knowledge. I would bet that the Cleveland Clinic was fully aware of the process at hand, and turned a blind eye, probably saying to the Dr. in question,"If something goes wrong, we know nothing."
I've had a very recent incident with the Cleveland Clinic, but I won't get into that.
If you've never been there, go. Marvel at the beauty of the place. The fine art, well lit tunnels and skyways, the "over friendly" staff, and the underlying "Soylent Green" type atmosphere that I experienced.

Dr. White, meet Dr. Frist. Two Frankensteins who should know better, who have no ethics, no morals, no conscience, will lie and cheat, and are sociopathically arrogant. Disgraceful behavior, unneccessary, money-grubbing, regressive, and we allow them to be leaders and the animal "brokers" to go about their "business". Very sad commentary on our society. The dog only had one life, too, bastards. You will end up helping no one with your pathetic and primitive "research".

Ridiculous! How can he justify what he did?!? The dog could not say that he did not want to participate, now could he? He was put through the misery so he could sell his invention. I think he should be punished...maybe someone could "test" their tools on him...see how he likes it.

Look, I feel that what the doctor did was so wrong, because their was an alternative method that could have been used. But I am very mad at some of the other comments. The Cleveland Clinic is an amazing hospital one of the best in the country, and this is not their fault. It is the fault of the neurosurgeon who did it without authorization. I love the clinic, and nothing can take away from that.

Stop insulting the clinic. I know it was horrible what they did to the dog, but the cleveland clinic has the patients best interest at heart. Unless you know what the heck you are talking about dont talk. The dog was in no pain at all, in was drugged with anesthesia, and then euthanized.

AS AN ADVOCATE FOR DOGS AND A SURVIVOR OF A BRAIN ANEURYSM, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY. HOW DARE THIS DR. INFLICT THIS HORRIBLE, PAINFUL CONDITION ON AN ANIMAL AND FOR WHAT? MORE MONEY? MORE SALES? HE NEEDS TO BE FIRED, LOSE HIS LISCENSE AND BE FINED FOR ANIMAL CRUELY, HE SHOULD FOR SURE NOT BE ALLOWED TO OWN AN ANIMAL!!

When something like this makes headlines it actually makes me lose hope in the human race. People die at that hospital everyday...actual human beings, and a news crew shows up for a dog? This just in.....but animal shelters euthanize dogs on a daily basis for no reason other than they can't care for them anymore. People need to look at the big picture. Technology is key in influencing and advancing medical techniques, thus saving HUMAN lives. It makes me laugh because the people who are posting idiotic comments about cruelty to animals are probably the ones who eat steak every night for dinner and will be the first ones to complain when someone they know dies of head trauma because this technology wasn't properly tested. And all you morons who keep saying we should use the technology on the doctor have lost it. What, you want to live by the philosophy an eye for an eye? Then go to Iran and see how much you like that concept. You're all pathetic.

I can't believe that someone could do this to an animal! It breaks my heart that a dog was sacrificed to sell a machine. Have we really got that greedy? Hopefully, the doctor will be terminated for being such an awful human being. Oh, and by the way all you people saying the doctor did the right thing...you need to shut your mouths!! I despise people like you...only concerned about yourselves. This was a precious animal that couldn't defend its self. Along with the doctor we should treat you with the machine!

We cannot blame the entire Clinic for one doctor's cruelty.A doctor at the Clinic diagnosed a condition I had that no one else could. My current physician diagnosed 2 separate conditions on the first try without unnecessary testing.
However, I do believe that the Clinic should make public whatever punishment this doctor received and educate its entire staff on proper protocol.
Yes,doctors are human and do make mistakes, but we should not judge all on the basis of a few.
I think what shocked most of us was the fact that this did happen at a world renown facility.
The thing that boggles my mind is if this device was to treat a human condition, why was the victim a dog? In my opinion, if the poor animal had to be destroyed, then the device obviously did not do what it was intended to do.
I still would like to know the name of this doctor and he should not be under the protection of the Clinic.

How appalling, this doctor needs to be fired!!! He should never never be allowed to work in the medical field again. Isn't it sad that the only punshiment was 2 years of no animal research. Maybe the Cleveland Clinic should release the name this so called doctor and quit protecting him. That bastard needs to be treated how he treated that poor dog, inhumanly. That doctor not only should be treated as he treated that dog but forced to live in the same conditions. Maybe he should have something implanted in his head. And what about the people who were watching, punshiment needs to go their way also. I am boycotting the Cleveland Clinic and maybe others should to. It doesn't matter to the Cleveland Clinic how they make at a profit, as long as there is one.
Arrogant Bastards!!

Just because we have the ability to do something does not give one the right to do it. The animal in question did not give consent, he was totally innocent. Why not use death row inmates. They owe a debt to society anyway.
