Your say: Local doctor sacrifices dog during sales demonstration

A neurosurgeon at the Cleveland Clinic induced a brain aneurysm on a dog to demonstrate a medical device to salespeople.

What are your thoughts? Did the doctor go too far?

I'm appalled! The doctor needs to be disciplined accordingly--perhaps some "demonstration" on him might be a fair punishment! Let's hope the poor dog is finally at peace...

World Class Care, right? Sad thing is people in this city/region will still hold that place, and those arrogant sons of b1tches in high esteem. Serves you all right, and you should not be shocked.

The fact that they did this at the Clinic doesn't surprise me. Was this one of the devices that they have a vested interest in? How much was this "animal vendor" paid? Also..wasn't the clinic in trouble years ago about doing testing on animals or something along those lines? The Clinic has turned into nothing but a multi-million dollar money machine!

This is outrageous. It wasn't stated in the broadcast what the machinery was designed to do but obviously it wasn't to save a life after the aneurysm was induced.

I think the Dr. was very right.

Sales people need to know what they are selling. Doing on a dog or a rabbit or a monkey, for the advance in helping people.

They are to many dogs and to many cats. To many for people to adopt. I am a animal lover also and if my grandchildren heard me say this would be upset with me.
That is my comments. People come first.

From your news cast, the doctor followed all the procedure except for waiting for approval, which was wrong. But as far as doing this to save human lives in the future, I find no fault in the doctor, and if more animal testing can save more human lives, please leave the doctors alone!

I am horrified that a doctor at a well known hospital would do this to a dog during a sales demonstration! It's one thing if it's part of "necessary" research to save human lifes(which I still don't like), but during a sales demo? What was he thinking? I rescue dogs for a German shepherd rescue, and I am just horrified. That poor dog. I've also been in sales for 15 years, and would never let anyone go to such extremes! Please announce his name so rescuers never release a dog to him.

I have the utmost respect for Dr. Robert White, a brilliant surgeon who has saved many, many lives. I am an animal lover, but I know & understand that it is necessary to use animals to perfect a life saving procedure on a human being.

I am horrified, however, that an animal was "sacrificed" for a "sales" pitch. I don't believe this was necessary. I think that disciplinary action is appropriate.

i think that testing on animals is very wronge! the aniamal was most likly in pain while this was happening and that is just crule. i think that this doctor should be fired and sent to jail for aniamal abuse! what person would do that to an animal. how would he like it if someone killed him just to show how to use an new tool?...mabey we should just so he knows how it feels!!! the cleveland clinic should fire him ASAP and he should be sent to jail!

I see nothing wrong with what the Dr. did. Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice an animals life in order to test or demonstrate a piece of equipment that will save human lives. Even though I am against cruelty to animals and love them, they are not the same as human life and as long as the animal did not suffer and everything was humanely done, I don't see it as a problem.

People who have no regard for animals have no heart. This story just confirms my opinion of the surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic and their "God complex." The doctor involved should at least pay a fine, but jail time would be more of a just punishment. I agree with the person who said that a "demonstration" should be performed on him for sales training!

How heartless and cruel. To use an inocent animal for the financial gain of a doctor during a sales pitch crosses the ethical line. The Clinic should not treat this lightly. As a nurse and pet owner I was sickened and this only reinforces my already bad opinion of them.

I find it hard to believe that a neurosurgeon would defy the Clinic's policy and perform such a horrific act for a group of sales people! I would hope that more than a class in humanity would be instituted and this physician be held accountable for this unacceptable act. There are reasons policies are instituted and I wonder if the Clinic would have approved of this demonstration? This demonstration wasn't to collect further research data to save a human life, it was done as side show for sales people!!!

We would all be shocked and horrified if that " mutt" was your best friend. And maybe it could have been someone's best friend - I guess it will never get the chance now. Why do people continue to use animals, especially dogs for medical experiments. Haven't dogs at least proved their value to us enough to get more respect than that? I mean, they help the blind and handicapped to live a better quality life, they help rid our streets of drugs and crime, they give love and companionship to the lonely, and much more. My God people, at least have a heart.

Whoever you are Doctor, please read the words of Chief Seattle (1854) and then contemplate the slippery slope the Cleveland Clinic is on.

" . . . So we will consider your offer to buy our land.
If we decide to accept, I will make one condition - the white man must treat the beasts of this land as his brothers.

I am a savage and do not understand any other way.

I have seen a thousand rotting buffaloes on the prairie, left by the white man who shot them from a passing train.

I am a savage and do not understand how the smoking iron horse can be made more important than the buffalo that we kill only to stay alive.

What is man without the beasts?
If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of the spirit.
For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man.
All things are connected...."

And another comment on this passage from a poem I read.

"If all the beasts were gone, who would walk with us on the Seventh Day".

Since science has recently shown that dogs are as intelligent as the average 5 to 6 year old child, and being a believer of the adage that ones compassion towards any living being should in no way correlate to its intelligence, I am bothered by animal experimentation these days what with the vast information ALREADY accumulated. At what point do the "diminishing returns" of incremental information still warrant the suffering of an animal so that a 79 year old man can live another couple months? Some say there are too many cats & dogs. Well, if you take a look around this planet there are too many people, too! To all of the people who dump an animal at the pound with an unrealistic belief that "someone will take 'em", please remember this could be YOUR dog's fate.

I was appalled to hear this story tonight. I was born with a congenital heart condition that requires ongoing cardiac monitoring as well as two open heart operations one of which was performed at the Cleveland Clinic. While I appreciate the cutting edge research that provides the renowned medical care of the Clinic I am also a devout animal lover and definitely think this doctor went too far. To sacrafice an animal in the name of making a sale is irreprehensible. As a continued "customer" of the Clinic I will be following this story very closely and demand that this doctor be appropriately disciplined for his callous actions. As a world renowned medical facility the Clinic has a duty and an image to uphold and as they have stated that this doctor was unauthorized to perform this "sales sacrifice" they should let the world know that this blatent violation of the rules will not be tolerated. If instead they decide to look the other way I may decide to look for medical advice somewhere else.

This doctor needs to either be fired or severely punished at the bare minimum. This time it was a dog, what policy will he or she decide is beneath him or her to follow on their next decision which may directly impact a human life? If a demonstration must be offered to sales people in order for them to have the capacity to sell this product, then video-tape the final test during the research process and utilize that legitimately approved animal test. Aside from this obvious, practical yet astute, let's think-outside-of-the-box solution, the Cleveland Clinic had better consider the mere fact this doctor took it upon their self to be above hospital policy and ignore procedure. How embarrassing for The Clinic should they choose to turn tail and back the doctor. With a world renowned establishment such as The Clinic, let's hope they use their well educated brains to prove to the public they won't be made a mockery of by one of their arrogant self exalting employees. I reiterate, while representing the Cleveland Clinic this doctor acted outside of policy. This disastrous decision resulted in the loss of life in an inhumane manner. As a form of community justice, too bad stoning isn't still in practice.

I am absolutely appalled at this doctor's behavior. His name should be released as I certainly would not want to be his patient. There should be ongoing unannounced inspections by animal rights groups and the state of Ohio to the Clinic labs where any testing is done with animals. What else goes on behind these closed doors?
Where were these salespeople attending the meeting? How in heaven's name did they condone this man's behavior?
As far as the dog vendor his name and photo should be released by Channel 3 so that area shelters, pounds, rescue groups and the like do not allow him/her to adopt animals.

The Cleveland Clinic needs to be more responsible and look to the works of some of their colleagues for more effective practices, such as the works of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). PCRM is an organization that promotes preventive medicine, conducts clinical research (not animal research) and encourages higher standards for ethics and effectiveness in research.

As stated from in an article in “Good Medicine” from PCRM, Animal tests do not predict results in humans. We heard it too many times before that that a new treatment almost magically heals spinal cord injuries in mice or cures cancer in rats, fail miserably in human patients. More than 90 percent of drugs that appear safe in animal tests fail in human studies. More than half of all approved drugs will be withdrawn or relabeled for serious or lethal effects in humans.

If Cleveland Clinic claims to be such a leader in the medical industry then they should start to expand their medical horizons and realize that animal testing can prove to more dangerous to humans and move beyond animal tests toward better testing methods.

Thank you so much WKYC for reporting on this story! Let's hope that it provokes discussion and prompts action.

The death of this dog in the name of science is just another sickening example of our society's blatant disregard and disrespect for living creatures. Can you imagine the terror this dog experienced before it was killed?

I understand that the victim was obtained from an animal broker. It is highly likely that the broker got the dog from an overcrowded shelter, an unethical breeder, or through an advertisement for a "free dog".

If you are as disgusted by this case of animal cruelty as I, please take action. Examples of what you can do are: write letters of protest to the Cleveland Clinic, volunteer or make a donation to local or national animal -realted charities, or even boycott the Cleveland Clinic.

Just a few examples of worthy charities are The Animal Protective League and various no-kill/ foster home rescue groups and shelters, as well as charities working to end this kind of torture such as The National Anti-Vivisection Society, PETA, and Physcians for Resposible Medicine.

Most importantly, have your pet spayed/neutured and adopt a shelter animal when looking for a companion.

Don't allow another homeless dog suffer needlessly.

As an RN at one of Ohio's major medical centers, I believe it is imperative that the medical equipment sales reps fully understand the equipment, how it works and the risks of using it. Often, the highly trained sales reps are the sole source of training for the physicians being introduced to new equipment, procedures and medications. These same people that are screaming "animal cruelty" are the same people that would be first to criticize and to bring lawsuits against doctors and nurses when their loved ones do not have a full recovery after a procedure. Would they prefer that the sales reps, & in turn their physicians, learn on Grandma, their husband or newborn child?

I'd rather see an animal tested on than a human. I love animals but humans come first. There are so many dogs and cats that the humane society ends up putting them to sleep. Therefore, it's better if the animal can advance medical care for humans than to be destroyed just because there are too many of them. I don't want it killed for sales purposes but if that is what it takes to save human lives, so be it.

So what if the dog was ill and would probably die from this, the idea that they took his life just so they could show this during a 'sales demo?' What is this world coming too. We kill innocent creatures for our own good, and then we take the lives of innocent babies before they are born too, again ensure we adults live forever!

Get a life people, the world doesn't evolve around just us!

I understand that the general public feels that a dog is inferior to a human and therefore can justify doing such an experiment to 'help mankind'. But who determined that. In some countries cows are sacred yet we consume how many millions a year here in America. Continueing on that angle, I do believe in God and nowhere in the Bible did it say the dog was put here for us to experiement on for our 'well being'. Noah didn't save man when he went on the ark, he saved the animals. They only kill what they need to eat to survive, we merely do experiments to live longer. The other angle scientifically will be In a hundred years, this period of time will go down in the history books as humans acting as primitive as the caveman in medicine. Lets hope we learn alot faster! Thanks for opportunity to be heard.

I am very appalled and heart broken by what happend to this innocent "Creature of Christ". My only consolation is that the dog is now with his loving creator...running and playing in beautiful green pastures. As for the Cleveland Clinic, the doctor, sales reps, and manufacturere of the "device" you are ALL DISGUSTING! Each and everyone of you should have your faces and names published, and be charged with Animal Cruelty. Better yet, subject ALL of YOU to the same testing!

I am a Medical Sale Rep. Had I been there, I would have grabbed the dog and ran out. YOU sales people are ALL gutless!!

Remember one thing...VENGENCE IS MINE SAYS THE LORD! God sees EVERYTHING and HE knows who YOU are! You will ALL get YOUR just PUNISHMENT in due time. AMEN!!

I have never been so saddened in my entire life. Does everything have to be about money without consideration for the innocent. This poor dog just wanted love and affection and the doctor gave him death for a sales pitch. This is most discussing and all I can say is I would not go to the clinic for nothing. I have spent my entire life trying to save any animal that I can and I do understand that you need research but this is beyond research. I am sickened and saddened at the same time. If you can kill an innocent animal just to show a bunch of salesman how a product works I would never trust you to care for a patient again. You are one sick person with no regards for life. And the shelter who handed the dog over to you should also be shut down. These are the time to have no kill shelters in place everywhere and using animals for financial gain is outrageous. May you pay for your actions when you meet your maker

World Class Care? The Cleveland Clinic almost killed my mother more than 30 years ago. Unfortunatly back then it was not common practice to sue a hospital or their doctors. If it was, I would own my own island in the South Pacific right now. I would never step foot in that hospital. And now they find it acceptable to kill animals in the name of "medicine??" This is more pure GREED on the part of the Directors and the doctors. Shame on them! I steer everyone I know away from the Clinic based on their sheer arrogance that they are the "best." They are nothing more than over-educated cocky doctors who actually believe their own press. How about asking my mother who still suffers from the mistakes of their "world class care?" Frankly I am not surprised they would do something this horrific. This situation begs the question, "when are they going to start demonstrating on humans and think it is okay in the name of medicine???"

How much did the doctor stand to make on this? They do this with people too. Last year they had to admit that were putting stuff in people that they were getting money for. Not a surprise coming from that place. They won't do anything to the doctor and will chalk the whole thing up to paperwork problems. Again.

I AM TERRIFIED THAT EVEN THE CLEVELAND CLINIC HAS YET TO LEARN THAT THE RESULTS FROM NONHUMAN RESEARCH KILLS/DAMAGES RATHER THAN HELPS HUMANS. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE NO MORAL RIGHT TO DO THIS TO ANOTHER LIVING BEING WHO GOD GAVE ALL CAPAPCITY FOR FEAR AND PAIN; THE DESIRE FOR FREEDOM AND LIFE, JUST AS GOD GAVE TO HUMANS.

The more you learn about animal research, the more you realize that it has done more harm than good. Tests results from animals cannot be extrapulated to humans. Animals continue to be used because it provides funding for universities, NOT because it benefits humans.

It's too bad that the laws of reciprocity don't apply to human-animal trangressions like this. If they did, one could imagine a prison where animal abusers would make amends by themselves becoming medical "research subjects" for the betterment of medical understanding. It also makes practical sense since animal models are useless in predicting human safety and efficacy. Over 99% of drugs that are found effective on non-human animals never make it to market, because they either fail during human clinical trials, or the drugs harm humans in those trials.

Does anyone realize the "sales people" are on commission and the life of a dog is not their #1 concern? And...better, yet, who actually owned this dog and allowed such a horrific procedure to occur? The ASPCA arrests people like this.

Disgusting!! This is a case for 'an eye for an eye!' Who the hell does this SOB think he is?! Animals are not ours to experiment on!! This is MURDER for profit!!!! SHAME on that so called DOCTOR!!! The Clinic should fire him NOW!!!

I work at the Cleveland Clinic and while I don't agree with the Doctors decision in what he did I'm very upset and frustrated at all of your comments that say we don't provide world class care, what do you expect from the Cleveland Clinic etc. If some of you would do your research and educate yourselves, you would see that we do provide world class care and it's because of us and other healthcare institutions that you all are alive today, If we didn't exsist and I'm not just saying the Cleveland Clinic I'm speaking for all of the healthcare institutions out there, what would all of you do if faced with a life threatining illness or disease?? Before making snap judgements and accusing of us of being insensitive to women and such for instance "Is the quack in question a middle easterner? They have no respect for women, why not animals?
What's wrong with the sales people? Were they afraid to stop the almighty doctor? They all make me sick. A doctor killed a friend of mine and was not held responsible due to the good old doc network. Pill and procedure pushers many times do more harm than good. They always think they are above reproach. Glad White's retired, one less egomaniac on the loose. Message to you all, YOUR BUSINESS AND YOU EGO ARE NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE DIGNITY OF LIFE" was said PLEASE GO BACK TO COLLEGE AND EDUCATE YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!! You all disgust me and I hope you never need our services.

This is a horrible offense to an innocent life. I hope that doctor is severly disciplined because what he does was wrong. There is no grey area on this matter. It's wrong. I am shocked that the Clinic could allow this to happen. And I will be watching to make sure they do the right thing.

The clinic better come clean about the financial arrangements between the doctor and the company. Is this ANOTHER case of a clinic doctor having a cozy relationship with a medical company? The top doctor there got caught in a deal with a company, another was fired for the same thing. Now this. I'd be afraid to be a patient there. Would I end up as a demonstration for salesman?

I am completely disgusted. An innocent animal dies for what? A sales demo? Maybe the next time this doctor wants to do a demo he should use his wife or one of his children...

Grow up people. How many dogs are put to sleep in pounds EVERY DAY. If every pet were "sacrificed" in the county, it wouldn't be as important as one person being shot and killed.

As a Cleveland Clinic Employee, animal lover, owner and activist, I cannot find words to describe the way this news makes me feel. I am more than outraged and saddened. I believe in an eye for an eye. And this so-called doctor should be punished to the fullest extent. But that won't be much since the state of Ohio is at the bottom of the list for Animal Rights. In this state, you can get away with murder, which is what this doctor did, when it comes to Animal Cruelty. In this day of technology marvels, this was the only way to demonstrate this device? I don't believe it. This man is a poor excuse for a doctor and needs to have a "demonstration" performed on him or one of his family members-in Public Square-where all can attend!! What's wrong with using cadavers or death row inmates? Our tax dollars are only keeping them fed and alive.

Couldn't they have used a cow instead, and had steaks and burgers afterwards? These people need sales training.

This is absolutely sickening. I can not believe that in this day and age that some people still think it is necessary to test on animals. When I heard this story I became so angry and thought maybe I should I put a protest sign on my dog and walk the line at the Cleveland Clinic. To all involved with this demonstration you should feel ashamed of yourselves. To the doctor who did it, maybe you should take a walk through the APL shelter and see what abuse does to innocent animals. Animals have no voice and you clearly took advantage. But, I can tell you that all animals feel pain! I, also hope someone is investigating the "animal vendor". They too need to be punished and closed down. Remember, what goes around comes around.

UNBELIEVEABLE. The Cleveland Clinic needs to be fined and warned that something like this will NEVER happen again. The Dr. needs to have his name published, his license suspended and be charged with animal cruelty. Lastly, yes, everyone would like to find out who released this dog and who it was released too. That person should alse be charged. I work in animal rescue and I can tell you that animals have so many qualities that we humans could learn from. I am in agreement, if you need something to experiment on, pull someone from death row. Those people have commited a crime, dogs have done nothing but have been born more than likely because of an irresponsible human.

One of the many reasons I will never go to the clinic for any type of procedure. What a sickening display of arrogance and greed on the part of the surgeon.

I'll bet the device he was demonstrating was one that he developed. Maybe he should use a family member of his for the next demonstration instead of an innocent animal. To have done this for no other reason than to demonstrate the device to a bunch of slimy sales people is the worst of all. Fire the surgeon and anyone else who knew about this ahead of time and sever all ties with the sales people who attended.

If the clinic cannot be trusted to treat animal life with dignity then it certainly cannot be trusted to do so with human life.
