good. the illegal immigrants drain the already weak system and make it hard for the reat of us in the area to earn a living because they will work for pennies.
Immigrants in the US were recently given a generous amount of time to become legal, yet they chose not to do so. I think it's a shame that they are literally "hiding" in church basements, draining the resources of the parishioners. Go through the steps to be in the US legally or suffer the consequences. Unemployment is already high in Ohio and cheap, immigrant labor might have something to do with that fact. Churches should not be permitted to become "neutral zones" for people who are willfully breaking the law--last time I checked, it's illegal for someone to be in the US without the proper paperwork. The phrases "aiding & abetting" and "harboring a fugitive" come to mind.
Either enforce the immigration law or repeal the immigration laws. If we can't control the border, Homeland Security is one big expensive joke.
Any terrorist can fly/sail/walk into Mexico from South America and stroll across the border. Meanwhile, we spend billions of tax dollars checking airports for illegal gels, coffee, and shoes... Get serious...
Union leaders don't care either, so what if illegal immigration drives down wages. No one cares...
The key word here is "illegal". These are people who have already broken the laws of the U.S. and then expect us to cater to their needs. It's good that the government is finally doing it's job and enforcing the immigration laws so that immigrants who come here do so legally.
Send their asses back, every last one of them.

The only people responsible for the 16 year old being separated from her child, is the 16 year old's parents. These people have had enough time to become "legal"!!! Who cares how many trees they can dig in an hour?!? I know I don't. I care about resources in this small city being drained, I care about the fact that I have to follow the law...so should they. It's rediculous that they are being hidden by the church, the police should raid the church and send them "home".
I wish these illegals would stop whining and go back where they came from. The problem is, they don't want to be U.S. citizens. They want to come here, drain our city and go home..come back and do it all again. They broke the law coming here, and continue doing so, and NOW have a church backing them. They have more rights than citizens do, no wonder they like it here so much. Finally. Something is being done.

It would be nice to hear the side of the story from the agents who are checking for illegals. I hardly think that asking for proof of citizenship is "harassment". To the woman who said children are being harassed....please explain your definition of harassment. This reporting is sensationalism at it's best.
Screw political correctness. Wake up people, these Mexicans don't give a fat rat's behind about you or me. Time to build a 2,000 mile long wall that is 50 feet high along our borders. By the time this country foots the bill for the illegal lazy baby factories...crime sprees committed by them and all the dough put into prisons etc. etc, this wall could be paid for. Nobody talks about the fact that there are two main reasons for LEGAL immigration: a) Official checking of crime records and arrest warrants in one's home country; and b) Official checking for and vaccinations against dreaded disease. While people going thru the LEGAL process of immigration pay thousands of dollars and wait months and YEARS to obey the law, illegal aliens run across the TX and AZ border, fleeing crime and bringing in disease. The whole thing is a MOCKERY of the law and of all the honest, law-abiding people immigrating the right way.
I do feel sorry for the children born here, whose parents are illegals. And that leads to the other problem: Automatic citizenship for anyone born here, regardless of parental citizenship, needs to be STOPPED immediately.
The government turned the hatians around in their boats, but yet allow the illegal immigrants to come in and then allow them benefits, but yet they claim they can not control them, big business hire them dirt cheap and cause legal Americans to lose their jobs and home,were is the justice in that????
Mexico is our neighbor, these people should take the necessary steps and enter legally, we will let them stay, but rules and regulations are important.

Reading these previous comments makes me ashamed to be an American. How small, how nasty, how selfish can people be? As a parishioner of St. Mary Church, I will do everything I can to support Fr. Steve Vellenga and these people. They are lovely, warm, generous people who are simply looking for better lives for themselves and their families. How many of our ancestors did the same?
These illegal immigrants are so ridiculous. If you really want to be in America come here legally, go through the correct steps. I couldnt have been anymore happier to see that ICE was doing this operation...ABOUT TIME!
I am glad they are doing sweeps of the illegal immigrants in Painesville. They are a drain on the economy. The whole "no one would do the jobs they do" is such a load of junk. The authorities should have sat right down the street from this church and waited for all these people to come out because the people hiding are the ones that are here illegally. Why else would you hide out in a church basement, in "fear", if you did nothing wrong? Oh, that's right, they did do something wrong. Entering this country illegally is a crime. I am so sick of these ILLEGAL immigrants crying that we don't give them any rights. I feel we are giving them too may rights. If they want to live in this country, they need to do it LEGALLY! The illegal immigrants think they should have all the rights we do in this country, yet they will not respect our country by coming here legally.

People need to realize that most companys that employ mexicans in this area pay the same rate they would pay our sons and daughters, this i know. And when they work for these employers they get paid by checks which have taxes taken out. This is how they get the jobs in the first place, it is true that they use fake S.S. numbers, but then most do not file taxes for being afraid of being caught, so the government gets their tax money and they do not get a refund.As for people saying they send money back to Mexico, this is true , but they still put money into our economy by paying for food, clothes housing. Did you ever notice that while the middle class and middle-class wage are DISAPPEARING in this country due to illegals taking the jobs for minimum wage. . . the UNIONS SAY ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the illegals pushing citizens out of the workforce. The only explanation for that has to be that the unions expect to bring them all into the union fold, with no regard for the law. But then, it WILL be a huge voting block, for the likes of Obama or Hillary, and that is what it's all about.

I have nothing against helping other people but I believe charity begins at home and we Americans need help, with all the killing overseas we need to be more concern about helping ourselfs for a change.
Gather them all together give them a test about what America is about, reading, writing, english, if they can pass, then I say give them a chance, but if they can't give them a ticket back to their home quickly. How many of them have had medical attention, what are they bring into this country??
Does anyone see the similarity between this and the rounding up of the Jews by Hitler in Germany? I am surprised at some of the heartless comments of some people whose parents , grandparents, ancestors immigrated to this country for a better life. Try putting yourselves in these people's places and realize that they are just trying to feed their families and make a decent living. If you were in their place you would be trying to do the same thing.

That is the perfect word for these Mexicans that flee to America for a free ride instead of staying in their own country and making it a better place for their children. America didn't become what it is by Americans fleeing by the droves, it is what it is because people stayed and worked and fought for what it is. They should really be ashamed for taking the easy way out and letting down their country.

Why don't the churchs allow the children of illegals to go the their schools and absorb the cost? The churchs are protecting and harboring the people that are here illegally. I've had serveral delivery and installation people sent from major companys to my home only to send a guy or guys that tell me they speak little English. Because no background check, no real traceable ID. Most likely stolen identity. All of these jobs are coming into our homes to provide services. I can name names. HUGE!!! Using 3rd party companys to keep their hands clean and I know the 3rd party is hiring people working under, one example a woman using a 10 year old girl's social from New Mexico. Any comments...on this type of Abuse on Americans??????
We need to send back anyone who is in this country ILLEGALLY. They are a burden to all of us who are LEGAL, taxpaying citizens. The proposal that is being voted on is an insult to all of those people who have come here legally and have obtained citizenship through the proper channels. I don't think it is right to cross the border, drop a baby and become an American citizen just because you had a baby in this country. I am tired of the people who "Make the laws" in this country, spending our social security (which none of them pay into) to support their wars and to support the illegal immigrants. Our government pays landscapers about $7.00 an hour for each immigrant that they hire to work for them, consequently our government is taking our tax money and spending it on people who are here illegally to take away jobs from people who are paying their salaries for them. I feel that this should be put to a vote by the taxpaying, working AMERICAN CITIZEN'S, not our government who is taking OUR money to undermine our country.
Our country was founded on immigrants. These people are willing to do back breaking jobs that us spoiled Americans refuse to do. If we don't have them here to do the hard work, who from America will do it? Very few. These people are good people seeking to feed their family. They deserve our respect and assistance.
This situation is really a catch 22. Unfortunately, there aren't many US citizens who will do the hard labor jobs that the Latinos will do....and it's not because of the wage....most of these employers pay above and beyond the minimum wage that is set, however, US citizens just don't want to do manual labor anymore. Two dozen arrested and 400 to 500 go into hiding at St. Marys. The problem sounds much, much bigger than the hispanic community wants you to see. If they want to come here, make them do it legally. My mother was an English war bride and she had to register every year and had a green card until she became a citizen. She followed the the rules so why do the hispanics think they are above the LAW?

To the person at St. Mary's, and the woman who has children of an illegal I say this. I am not selfish, or mean. I too have ancestors who came here from aother countries, and I'm proud of them for doing it. They did it because they wanted to find a better life, work hard and be AMERICANS. They SHARED their culture with others, and added TO the cultures already here. They didn't SNEAK in, break LAWS, disrespect the people already here, refuse to speak English, or wave the American flag. Maybe the illegal dad should have become legal before having sex??? At Sears they are paid more then the Cashiers!
Day Laborers ask more then minumum wage. (and most households are not paying rent, medical, food or childcare because of public assistance) Allows for New Mortgages (Expensive homes and Incmome property, new Trucks) Can we go to Mexico and get the same service? Everything paid for and we can work and use all of our income for the extras...Some American DREAM, huh?
How do you explain Sears, allowing for years those cleaning the bathrooms and buffing the floors to be paid in cash by a 3rd party company $5.25 an hour in cash because they have no papers. Then about 5 months ago a new company Hellermeyer hires only those with social security paying $9.00 an hour. So, one example as I just gave earlier is a young woman told a Sears Mexican/American Employee that she is so happy because now she can make more money. But, she had to buy a social security number and fake ID. One of a 10 year old girl from New Mexico. She is also happy because her Husband who used to stand outside of Home Depot as a Day Laborer now works for $9 an hr through Hellermeyer at Macy's, also using a bought and stolen Social Security card. Full time work. This company Hellermeyer is being utilized by many major retailers. As well Sears, like many company's used to pay it's Delivery people more $ Now because ..."These people are willing to do back breaking jobs that us spoiled Americans refuse to do." Sears has lowered it's wages and cleaned it's hands it hires subcontractors that are verified by again Spanish speaking Relatives of the delivery teams. The Delivery drivers show up earlier in the morning most all speak no English. The Delivery guys Nephew (a Sears Employee said his Uncle takes any one with him he wants on a delivery. Like is someone just got here from Mexico and needs work they just hop in his truck pull up to Sears and hop into your home. You have no way of finding out who was in your home. If documents were ever asked they could just use the Swap meet purchased ones. The ones that cost $150, street market has gone up from $50. Sears has not verified any ID, Background check, or drug testing. Yet, all Sears Employees undergo all of this and Sears cashiers are paid only $7...less then the illegals committing a crime using stolen ID, they, the Husband and Wife team make $9 an hr at Sears and $9 at Macy's.
The Newspaper did an article about a year ago. Talking with several day laborers. They all said they agreed to not accept any less then $10 per hr. Some of the new people that just got here (paying Human Smugglers/often also associated with Drug Cartels)want to take less but it is up to the guys that have been here longer to get them to understand they have to stand up for at least $10 or they will keep cutting the price down. The mall where Sears is, is just like Mexico. Walking in almost any day almost all you here is Spanish, Big trucks (All are new or near new...much better then I had when I was just starting out)in the lots with Spanish Music blarring, the flags (not American) of there County hanging on the rear view mirrors. The Store announcements in English and Spanish.
Is everything becoming available more and more in Spanish because they are doing the jobs Americans don't want to do? We need to stand up to these Companies when we see non English speaking people employed. It was, or is it still a requirement to take a citizenship test in English?
I believe there is nothing wrong with LEGAL immigration. My grandparents came here for a better way of life, LEARNED AND SPOKE ENGLISH (BY THE WAY, FOR THOSE OF YOU THINK SPANISH IS THE LANGUAGE OF OUR COUNTRY, YOUR ARE WRONG!!!!!) They were PROUD to take on the ways of this country. They worked hard to earn a living, NOT living off the system.
I feel that for the people that are here illegally, they have no right to expect us government to change EVERYTHING to SPANISH so that they can understand it;learn ENGLISH. St. Mary's church is nearly all immigrants now. There really aren't many caucasian parishoners left now, as that whole area is is mainly immigrants, and they are mostly Catholics.
From now on, the only politicians I will vote for are the ones (if there are any) that are for getting rid of illegals. I'm tired of hearing about them, and knowing all of the problems they are creating. Now we are at war in our own country, and by the rate we're going, we'll be begging to leave the U.S., because we don't know spanish. I'll be damned if I'm going to learn their language! Obviously, the people aren't being listened to. Judging by the comments here, there are way more against, then for illegal immigrants.
So, St. Mary's does not want to lose the money they get from it's members. The Catholic Church must gain much financial contributions from the Hispanic community. That is most of it's membership, right. They combine that with the political agenda. Church and Politics, you know that marriage for joint purpose. What is the governments reason for fighting so hard to keep illegal here?
1. World Banks (including America) start ups and exchanges in 3rd world countries to drain the resource, polute the lands and drive out the native land owner's (owners by generation of heir. Basically in the family way back...squatters rights)
2. The slow introduction of the Biometric card. Of which, Americans would Never have agreed to but, since we now have such a major crisis created or allowed by our Government they have now created the problem which allows them (Big Daddy) to deliver to us the solution. Our Saviours...a Biometric Card would solve all of this ID problem. Americans that did not want to give up their freedom. Will now more like comply. Look it up Biometric Card. Already used in some areas of government. It contains EVERYTHING about us just like a scan bar in the grocery store. It has our name, address, medical history, Credit file, and more. One more wall would be broken down to gain control and monitoring over us.

My comment is, nothing would surprise me coming from our government. That card is probably already in use in more areas than we know of. They can do anything they wish, S.S. etc. and they know it. I doubt they would need this situation to enable themselves to utilize the card. But, who knows. Anything is possible.
It just gives a reason for Americans to go along with it a reason why. Just like Americans need a reason why to go to war.
Most of them may be lovely, warm, generous people as the parishioner calls them. However, they could just as easily put all the energy and determination they use to cross the fence or river, into doing something about changing the conditions in their own country. Then they nor their children or grandchildren would ever have to leave their own country to earn a living. It is terrible for the children when their parents get arrested, but it is the fault of their illegal alien parents and/or U.S. Citizen second parent who knowingly put them in that situation. As if that's not bad enough, then want to use them as excuses or shields for not going to jail or getting deported. It was really a shame to hear that fourteen year old girl lie about being questioned on the street by agents just to get herself on TV. She did not fool those of us with common sense and neither did the opportunistic media hound attorney, David Leopold. As for the businesses in Lake County, if they really aren't paying minimum wage, you should report them to the labor commission.
I'm not sure which way I stand on this issue yet, but come on people...some of you need to grow up. If you're going to disagree about something, do it with a little maturity. I can't believe some of these comments. "Fat" and "Maggotty asses" are not the way to win an arguement. It just shows how childish you are - and you have no business debating something. Speak with some intelligence, and get off your high horse.
To the woman who has children with an illegal alien: I certainly hope you're wisely investing his earnings for the future. If something were to happen to him on the job, he won't be eligible for workers' compensation nor disability benefits. If he dies before your children are 18, they won't receive any social security survivors' benefits. If he does manage to stay here illegally and lives long enough to retire, he's still not going to be able to receive social security benefits.
For the few folks that can't stick to a subject, please, learn how to follow directions. This forum is about the upcoming immigratioin bill in reference to the Painsville incident, not commenting on other's comments.
I say if the immigrants who come here illegally want to stay in this country then they should prove to us that they want to become citizens by joining the military and go to Iraq and fight for our country for 2 years then give them citizenship, if not then ship them home. As for any church giving them sanctuary, there is a separation of Church and state, and if they take a stand for the illegal immigrants then the feds should get a warrant and search any church that grants them sanctuary. The church is here to preach the GOOD NEWS of Jesus Christ, not to grant sanctuary to anyone who breaks the law or is here illegally.

The facts are very simple. Coming into this country to visit, work or live requires certain documentation. We are a land of laws. If you come in without permission or overstay your allowed visit or just sneak in, then you have broken the law. If you have children or family or spouses, you are responsible for your actions of breaking the law just as any citizen in this country is if they break the law. If an American citizen breaks the law, their family suffers the consequences of those actions. Why should people here illegally be any different? There are safeguards in place to protect them from returning to dangerous situations, i.e. political asylum. If anyone provides a "neutral zone" to illegal activity, i.e. illegal immigration protected by entire cities and churches, then the protectors must also be held accountable under the law! The churches are no exception, the Catholic Church is still paying for its crimes! A crime is a crime! Aiding and abetting and Harboring a fugitive are crimes and we must get real and prosecute all crimes or prosecute NO crimes! No one really should care if these people do not approve of the law enforcement officials and their methods they used yesterday to round up criminals! They are FINALLY doing their jobs!! If an elected official or any public servant offers safe havens, they should be rounded up, fired and charged with a crime as well! The attitude of the reporters carrying this story is even more of an outrage. It seems there was sympathy beyond comprehension! These same reporters show no mercy to other criminals in the news! The local news stations don't even wait for people to be convicted before they splash their names and faces all over the news for alleged crimes! What is the deal?! My mother follwed the laws to become legal in 1968! Anyone who thinks they are above those laws to live in this great country clearly does not deserve to even visit! And, if you think it is not great, LEAVE!!!

Of course by staying at home then they will get evicted because they can't steal the job or work illegally which is the real reason they come. Who is holding the employers accountable! The majority of illegals would not come if they didn't have a way to work and earn wages ten times what they are paid where they are allowed to work. Work place enforcement is the most efficient way to enforce the immigration laws. Unfortunately, the business community gives money to political campaigns and has effectively bought a halt to this type of enforcement.

There is a vote in the Senate on tomorrow on legalizing the 12 million who have broken into my country. My wife was born in Asian and did everything according to the law to become a citizen. Forgiving these law breakers is a slap in the face to anyone who immigrated legally.

I understand the situation these people are in and feel for them, but we can not afford this.
We have people here who are struggling to make ends meet every day and they are told all the time that they make too much money for help. My daughter lives beside these illegals and they dress better than she can dress her children and she is a single mom and they have tons of big expensive toys outside to ride and my daughter can not afford this for her children. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE. If they stay it needs to be on there own sweat and no help from our government. We need to help OUR OWN first.
The law states you MUST come to this country thru legal means, you MUST speak and know English to take the test for Citizenship. You MUST show proper documentation to get a Social Security card. If you obtain a card by any other means, it is IDENTITY THEFT which is a FELONY! My grandfather immigrated to this country LEGALLY and worked in construction (whoops one of those jobs no American would take). Raised 7 children with NO GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. Learned to read and write in English-even with an 8th grade education. My suggestion to those whose parents or spouse is in this country illegally-question them why they hold such racist views that they are better than anyone else and that they are above the law. Maybe they need to talk to those who struggled to come to this country legally. Please tell my neighbor who came here from South Korea and went to night school for SIX years, learned English and became a US citizen,whose only daughter is in Taiwan teaching English prior to going on assignment for the Peace Corps why illegal immigrants are better than her and they are above the law. As far as the Catholic church being a neutral zone-what do you expect from a church that makes up it's own rules as it goes along? Remember they couldn't even control their own priests in repect to the law of the land. Try living in a border state-you can get told that the are just "non-criminal illegal immigrants".
It's time our government started taking a good look at the possibility of sending Mexico a bill every time we have to foot the bill for their people being here illegally, right on down to any incarceration for crimes committed plus transportation BACK to Mexico plus interest and fines.After all, these illegals are still MEXICAN citizens.

Unfortunately, I think we are fighting a losing battle. I spent quite a while reading profiles of the presidential candidates just now. They ALL seem to be ready to take in these and more. I don't think they care at all what the American People want, and they definitely do not care for the feelings of legal immigrants who fought and worked so hard to be here..and become Americans. I think this is a slap in the face to them. I for one, am proud of them for working so hard, & respecting this country. I'm glad they are here. Now, I just want all illegal immigrants to go away. To the man who fought in the war and is offended at the ATM, I'm with you. Americans shouldn't have to push a button to get get the english language. It makes me so ashamed of our officials.
I think we have bigger fish to fry, the mexicans are quiet and family oriented, at least they work, and work hard for nothing, how about all the legal african americans that recieve free schooling and government money? How many of them do you see abusing the welfare system, walking in for their food stamps with diamonds and gold around their necks and caddilacs outside and cant keep a job? I also do not think it was very tactful for the government to go into these family homes and take parents away in front of the eyes of their children, how sad, they should have gone to their place of employment or given a fine first. These people are trying to live a better life too and I dont see any other country booting Americans out of theirs. Dont we have better things to do?
Why doesnt the goverment just come and round up all these people each time they hold one of their rallys or just sit in front of Home Depot and snatch them as they walk in.
Forget buliding a fence along the border, what we need to do is bulid one around Painesville or should I say "Little Mexico". Lake county is going down the drain and it doesnt seem to care. You can also forget trying to get any assistance from lake county, They only offer help to the Mexicans it seems now. There is 14 million illegal Mexicans in this country, I say let them enlist for four years in the military and in return they are granted citizenship. The war in Iraq would be over in a few days if we sent a surge of 14 million mexicans over there.
To "bigger fish to fry", no one approves of people bleeding the system when they can work. But they are here legally and if their children saw them arrested, maybe they should have become legal way back when they were warned which was quite a while ago. And, Americans aren't sneaking illegally into other countries, if they were they would be in that countries jail.
Making illegal men serve in the military in exchange for citizenship is a great idea. The wives and kids could go home, and after dad earns his right to stay, he can send for them. Also, they should be trying to improve their homeland, not running from it. Most don't want to be Americans anyway. What they want is bring Mexico here. They work for nothing, live 20 to a household and send money home so more can sneak in. Mark my words. If we don't stop this now, there will be no english language left in five years. EVERYTHING will be in spanish and we will be the odd people out.
