What I do when I have the hiccups is eat a spoonful of peanut butter. It works every time.

I don't know, but I have always used the old remedy of swallowing a teaspoon of sugar straight down as fast as you can. It is hard, I've done it, but it seems to work. What have you got to loose?
Good Luck!!

Two tablespoons of vinegar taken one right after the other always works for me.

What I have done in the past is fill a shot glass with water, light a match and put it out in the water. Then take the shot of water as fast as possible after putting the match in it. I do this all the time and it works really well.

My husband has had the hiccups on two different occasions lasting the longest 2 1/2 weeks! The doctor prescribed numerous medications that proved not to work, even referred him to an allergy doctor. We also tried all of the home remedies out there. They finally prescribed Nexium and they stopped!

Here are some comments e-mailed to Romona Robinson today:

Hi Romona,

I was watching your news program, tuesday evening, about the man who has the everlasting hiccups. A cure that had worked for me in the past, was to take two teaspoons of pure granulated suger, and swallow it down.

I'm sure he has tried most everything already but, you never know.......

Love your news program,

Jack.........

I get hiccups occationally. And when I do, my remedy always works. I eat a spoon full of peanut butter. If one spoon full doesn't work, then I do another one. It works everytime. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Ann Cantrell

I agree that the peanut butter treatment usually works.

An E.R. doctor also suggested using Zantac, which does have some longer lasting benefits.

What works for me is that I hold my breath for as long as I possibly can. Sometimes, it doesn't work the first time around but usually by the third trial, my hiccups are gone. (a quick dizzy spell is a common side effect if you get up too fast afterwards)

My late husband graduated from Ashland College in l965, before I met him. He told me that while he was in college he had had hiccups which he could not get rid of. The prescription drug "Thorazine" was prescribed, and did the job! I don't know if this drug is even available today, and have no idea what dosage was used. He was hospitalized in May/June of 2002 with a cancer diagnosis. He called me one day at work and asked the name of the drug that had cured his hiccups when he was in college,as he couldn't remember and had them again. Either the doctor prescribed the drug or the hiccups stopped on their own, because he didn't have the hiccups when I went to visit him. I hope this helps.
