Your say: Nationwide beef recall

Heinen's has voluntarily pulled some of its meat off the shelf after a Minneapolis company recalled 118,000 pounds of ground beef that may be laced with Ecoli. Will this make you steer clear of beef?

Well, at this exact moment I'm eating a premium chicken sandwich from McDonald's, when what I REALLY wanted was a Big and Tasty. The recall made me change my mind at the drive through window...so I guess it's going to at least make me stop and think.

It could be just like the pet food recall, and expand.

I find it interesting that some consumers seem to think that "organic" beef will shield them from problems of this type. As far as I know, meat is contaminated with E. coli during slaughter; an organic diet for the cattle isn't going to overcome problems with slaughter.

If meat becomes contaminated with E coli during slaughter, why is it the ground beef and not other cuts of beef. Isn't gound beef just ground up sirloin or round roasts etc. So are the beef roasts possibly contaminated as well?? Heinen's meat is pricey to begin with, shouldn't price reflect quality from the supplier??

I was lead to believe that Heinens raised their own beef in Montana. Sounds like false advertising to me. Why would they need to use a beef supplier if this is true. I am very upset with Heinens. I have been shopping there for over 30 years.

Regarding organic beef ... by definition, the cows cannot be slaughtered in a manner that would expose them to e coli contamination: Why Eat Organic Meat?

Cows raised organically will not be force-fed corn or grains it didn't evolve to eat. Grass-fed cows have a much lower e coli contaimination rate more

And ... for those still eating meat ... here are some videos of how your meal turned from mammal to chuck ... slaughterhouse video

All cattle contain E. coli in the gut, no matter whether they're organic or not. If, during slaughter or processing, contents of the gut come in contact--directly or indirectly--with meat, there may be contamination of the latter.

Here is a USDA press release about a recall last October of contaminated ground beef, including organic.

Here is a news story with the slightly misleading title "Study: 'Organic' beef no safer than alternative." The beef described isn't exactly organic; it was, however, produced without the use of antibiotics.
