Your say: Purity Balls
Purity Balls are often organized and sponsored by Christian organizations. They are growing in size, and popularity.
One is scheduled next month at a country club in Allen County, Ohio.
Many articles have been written this year about Purity Balls; sme supportive of the idea while others are critical of the idea of girls pledging their chastity in lavish ceremonies.

I was stunned when I saw the story on the 11 o'clock news about the 'Purity Ball'! Young women escorted by their fathers to a 'Ball' to declare their intent to remain chaste until marriage. What irks me is not the admirable declaration by these young women of self respect, but the yet again glaring absence of young men who would greatly benefit by accepting and declaring such intentions for themselves. Until men learn to accept responsibility for their own actions and the bar is raised beyond the sexist adage that 'boys will be boys', all the proclamations and best intentions of women will be for naught.
It's good to see young women making positive decisions regarding purity and being able to feel special about it. It's a hard decision to make and even more difficult to keep.
Still, not all who do this are religiously motivated. Even as a youth pastor, I'd like to see more of these events targeting teens who want to make the same commitment but not because of religious conviction. It leaves a large group of people out.
While I applaud the notion of empowering young women to make the correct choice for themselves, where is the purity pledge for young men? It seems as if this is another way to impose a double standard on women. If women are ever to achieve parity in life, we have to talk to both young men and women and clarify values for both sexes equally.
Ridiculous! Teach your children moral, ethical behavior in the home. Teach them tolerance and to be kind to one another and maybe the world will improve. Instead of spending large amounts of money on a lavish party why not take that money and take a trip down to help with Habitat for Humanity or donate it to the local food bank or charity of your choice. I'd love to follow a few of these girls for the next 10-15 years and see if they've lived up to their big promise and what a sexist idea, are the boys having purity balls too. I am the mother of three girls 8 and under and find this idea inane.
this is utterly too much the fathers are control freaks I am sure when the dads were young they were allowed to be boy hores. And are these purity balls for the boys, Why should women get soiled goods from the boys. This culture needs to teach boys to take the lead in birth control. this is so stupid.
