This sounds like nothing more than another scam to sell more tires or alarm little old ladies that you are going to help with. If you rotate your tires on a regular basis including your spare, you should never have a problem unless the tire was defective in the first place.

My car is now 9 years old. I have never used the spare even though I put new 4 tires on the car. First thing I will do when I have a chance is check the expiration date on my spare in the trunk. I also want to know how you can tell if it's no good anymore other than just the date.

Mine sits under the back of my Trailblazer so its easy to check the tire pressure. Can't tell you how important it is to check it!

My VW's original all-season Michelin tires are still going strong 6 years and 52K miles later! As far as a 'spare' goes, I think I have one of those temporary 'doughnut' tires. As far as I know, it should not need replacement.
