Pothole Patrol

'Tis the season. The typical Ohio winter, cycling between sub freezing and spring-like balmy temperatures, is taking its toll on the area roads and highways.

We don't have to tell you, because you've probably been swerving around or landing in more than a few of these potholes on your daily travels.

If you've spotted a real big pothole or have noticed a particular trouble spot, let us hear from you.

take a drive down route 8 and then check your tires to see if they are still alive!!!

The potholes are so bad on Sprauge Road from State Road in North Royalton to Broadview Rd in Broadview Hts that it impossible to drive without hitting one and trying to avoid another. They really should be out there fixing the roads better since that is a main highway of traffic.

Nottingham Road off 185th & St Clair. What a mess until you get to Dille Road.

Speaking of Sprague Road, the problem starts in North Royalton from Abbey Road to Broadview Road.

All the roads in Parma are terrible. I hit a crater hole on York Rd. by Pleasant Valley which cost me $142.00 to have my tire fixed! It's really unsafe to have to look and dodge holes rather than the car in front of you. Fix your streets Parma!!!

Puritas Avenue between Grayton Road and Rocky River Drive, the whole road is absolutely horrible with potholes. Even if you swerve to miss one, you end up hitting another one. And then there are times you can't swerve because of a car next to you or car(s) in on-coming traffic, and that's when it's the worst.

Try driving down Broadway toward the Third Federal Headquarters. Pothole heaven, from I 490 to Aetna. Needs to be addressed !!

Puritas Rd. from Grayton to 130th is a mess.

Also, in North Olmsted, on Stearns Rd., the bridge that goes over I-480 is horrible. The city keeps pouring the black tar stuff in into it, but they aren't even patting it down. They just shovel it into the hole and move on.

So now I am avoiding potholes and I have black tar and rocks on the bottom of my car. Thanks North Olmsted!

Take Rockside Road in Seven Hills west until it turns into Snow Road in Parma is the WORST!!!! I almost got into a few accidents with people trying to swerve to avoid them!!!

90E just after the 271N express lanes end. The guy in front of me blew out both left side tires and I bent my left front rim beyond repair.

(Don't even get me started on the epic design flaw that is 271S where the express lanes end at 480, that engineer needs a kick in the rear)

I am a 96 year old man. I was in downtown Cleveland last week and tripped over a pothole on Superior Ave. Just my luck, my dentures flew out into another pothole. I could not get them. And wouldn't you know it, an RTA bus came by and smashed them to smithereens. Now all I can do is eat soup three times a day, I can't afford to replace them. Thanks a lot Mayor Jackson.

Take a gander of the pothole on I-77 North bound, on ramp, Stone Creek. That bad Boy cost me $1000.00, that is right One Thousand Dollars.

try driving in Elyria on Route 57 from Lorain Blvd. to Chestnut Ridge Rd., i thought of video taping it and putting it on youtube.com as a challenge to find a stretch of road that stays as bad for as long as this one does.

The potholes on McCracken Road between Lee and Broadway are horrible! You cant even try to avoid them without hitting another one. Talk about tire damage. All they do is fill the holes up time and time again and its back to where it was before.

S Main street in akron is full of them and there is no way to avoid them. After driving on them for a few days i had to get new tires the city should do something. Also down Interstate 224 towards lodi on the right side inbetween exit 261 and 94 going west is full of them as well!!!

There has to be a way where the street department of the city of cleveland can invest a little foresight into purchasing a better grade of asphalt for pothole repair and street paving. Hint, look at the high speed track in Germany known as the autobahn.....These materials do exist and have been there for years.

The roads of Northeast Ohio are in the worst shape I have ever seen them in. Makes no difference if it is a side street, main drag, or highway. There are so many holes that a drunk driver looks more in control of his car than someone who is trying to avoid the holes and high repair bills. My drive from Cuyahoga Falls into Euclid takes me across Route 8, 271 North, Cedar Road, & Euclid Avenue. There is not one spot of road that is in good shape. The State of Ohio and the local cities need to step up and get the holes fixed before someone gets seriously hurt.

Stark County...State St. between 43 and Cleveland Ave. There is a pot hole that I swear will swallow my entire car! Takes up HALF, yes HALF, of the driving lane! Can't be avoided!!! I get white knuckled just thinking about it! The best part, they patched all the other pot holes on the road last week and neglected the injury causing crater!

Pick a main street in Parma--any street-- and you are bound to hit a pot hole. The worst are to be found on Snow Roadas well as State but believe me the side streets can be just as bad. Hard to believe that the city of Parma has one of the area's highest tax bases and yet surface repairs are almost non existant.

Broadway Avenue from Rockwell to East 65th is a Big Mess. My 1998 Mercury was severly damaged, the City of Cleveland should not allow this to happen, but I'm sure the mechanic who repaired the damage was happy.

Also a REALLY huge problem on 76/224 west between Rtes 261 and 57 in the right hand lane. Truckers are trying to avoid them too and crowding you in the left lane. I saw one that could have swallowed up a small car! Desparately needs work done!

I agree...Parma - get you're act together. So many streets are in horrible shape, but Sprague Rd is the worst! And it's been this way for over a year. I've even seen the crews filling small holes, but pass up the big ones. Who's running the show in Parma.

An an engineering staff member of a community not listed here, I felt the need to respond to the ignorance of some of the gloggers. First of all, each City expends significant resources trying to maintain the roads in your community. In addition, the politicians in these communities feel the need to listen to those from the community that feel entitled to spend excessive amounts of money from city budgets to pay for YOUR garbage collection and other services. For each service offered, the money has to come from somewhere, which in many cases comes from the day to day maintenance of city streets and other facilities. For the $2.5 million that one community pays for garbage collection, significant sections of roadway could be repaved each year. This alone would reduce the pothole problem. For those that think things are better in Germany, move there!!! Their roads are better due to the design thickness of the subgrade and pavement. Each road in Ohio would cost about 4 times as much to construct using this practice. In the effort to save money and spread the construction dollars, our communities can not do this. Many of you complained about the potholes, only to have others complain about the only solution to potholes, cold patch. This tarry substance is used as a filler and is easily compacted by traffic. By overfilling holes, the compaction allows rutting and future maintenance to be delayed. Due to the job losses and shrinking economy, many communities are forced to do more with less. This year's freeze-thaw cycle just adds to the problem, resulting in more potholes. Before complaining that cities don't care about fixing problems, GET THE FACTS!!!

As mentioned in previous comments, the majority of the roads in Greater Cleveland have an excessive amount of chuckholes! Many of these are on State Routes! Doesn't the State of Ohio have any obligation to contribute to the cost of maintenance on these roads?

I-90 east & westbound from the Lorain/Cuyahoga line to about Route 611 in Sheffield/Avon. There are spots that you are no longer in control of your vehicle, with more than 100 feet of successive potholes. You get into those and just get shot around uncontrollably and hope for the best. I don't understand why this section is so bad. I can't imagine the freeze/thaw cycle has been any different in this couple of mile stretch. Poor engineering is the only answer.
