Congratulations! Just a quick note to let you know that I choose today as my first day of smoke free. I appear to smoke in the exact manner you do. The reason I dropped them today, my husband and best friend was diagonosed with bone marrow cancer 11 days ago. I have tried everything you did. This time I will fight the battle as my best friend has one to fight too. Best friends work together. Stay strong and I will continue to pray for all of us.
Have a great day and remember to smell the fresh air not the stinky air we are used to.

Wednesday, a friend of mine went back in the hospital for the 2nd time in 2 months. Both times for his heart. He is 37 years old & has 3 stints in his heart. Friday, another friend of mine was in the hospital emergency room for what we later found to be early stage emphysema. He is 50. I am 35 years old & it scares me because I, like them, am a heavy smoker. I smoke almost 2 packs per day. I start smoking when I was 9 years old, so for 26 years, most of which has been about 2 packs per day. I am in! Support will be helpful. Thanks for the opportunity to post. Kel

I have a suggestion for you. Like you, I have tried many different ways to quit. Today is my one week anniversary of not having a cigarette. This is the best I have done yet. By using the patch, I was taking care of the nicotine, but I need to occupy myself, the way cigarettes occupied me when I would have one. So, along with the patch, I acquired an addiction to suckers. They keep my hand-to-mouth movement going. Good luck to you, you're gonna feel so much better!

I quit 42 years ago after smoking 34 years, but twice in the past three months I was almost overcome by a desire for a cigaret. Will I ever completely get over that craving? It seems to be getting stronger.

I quit 6 weeks ago this past Saturday. I had a very bad cold and after not feeling like smoking for 2 weeks I thought to myself, why start now?

My husband is on Chantix (working for him), he smokes no more than 2 cigarettes a day and his quit date is April 15th, at which time we will be in Florida for two weeks.

A good friend of ours, who just turned 57 on March 30, was diagnosed with lung cancer and given 6 to 20 months to live. They told him last week the cancer is now in his bone.

Yesterday was a big craving day for me, but I let the craving have it's time, and then it went away. I had the willpower to say no. No more wheezing, coughing and stinking like cigarettes. Plus I'm saving a loooooooot of money.

Good luck Chad and others. You can do it.

I have not smoked a cigarette since Feb. 4. I used the Chantix which made the smeel horrible. i took the pills for 2 weeks and then i stopped and i still have not smoked. those pills worked for me. some other friends of mine did not have the same luck. you also have to be careful because i have read stories about the chantix causing suicidal thoughts. for me it was a lifesaver and i have absolutely no desire to smoke.

Congrats on deciding to quit! I decided back in February that I was going to quit. I had made several attemts just like you did. I had been smoking for 12 years as well. I decided with the help of my friends(my whole family smokes) that 2/25 was going to be my day. You have to make sure that you set a date and stick to it because otherwise you will make excuse after excuse to keep smoking.
I started using the patch, which because I smoked less than a pack a day, I started on Stage 2. I had tried the patch before, but always took it off when I left work and smoked - so didn't work out.
I wore them for 24 hours and then switched - I may have had vivid dreams from it, but no bad ones.
So far I am still going strong - I didn't have any relapses and no major occurrences of craving. But I still have time before I am in the clear I think.
Good luck with your venture! I hope that you can use some of us as an inspiration to help motivate yourself when you have your little moments!
You will feel so much better about yourself after you stop! I know I do!

You wrote my smoking life story except that I started smoking when I was 13 and I am now 47. I too tried everything you could think of to quit, gum, patches, lozenges, cold turkey, weaning, praying, you name it, I tried it. I had 4 children, still didn't quit. I had a close friend who died at 48 from lung cancer, still didn't quit. I, at 46, had a heart attack which was the direct result of smoking. After that I became more determined to quit. My cardiologist prescribed Chantix. It really does work. I was down to smoking 2-3 cigarettes a day when I had a second heart attack. That was it. I quit the day I went to the emergency room and have not smoked since. People don't understand that smoking does not just cause lung cancer. It takes its toll on many different parts of your body and any one of them can kill you. It has been 6 months since I quit. I feel better, smell better, taste better, breathe better, and live better. It's not as hard as a thought it would be to quit and wish I would have done it years ago. Good luck, Chad. I hope this will inspire others to quit.

Chad: You can do this! One day when my youngest son came home from school, he was in the 2nd grade, he told me that all his friends said "he stinks." I was shocked and asked "what do you mean, you take a bath every morning and always wear clean cloths"..he then said.."no, mommy, they said I stink like cigaretts." That broke my heart because it hit me...I am not only killing myself, but I am killing my child...I immediately broke up all the cigaretts I had, wet them and threw the remains in the trash..Chad, that was many, many years ago..my youngest son is now 26 and I have not picked up a cigarett since. Stay strong..you can do this!

Way to go Chad. I was in the studio on St. Patrick's day to get my head shaved for the St. Baldrick's event and you and Tom joined in the campaign to help raise money for childhood cancer research. Boy do you have your plate full. Bald, raising money to help kids and now your are going to stop smoking. You are one brave soul. I know that it is going to be tough for you to stop smoking,(don't ever say quit, because you are not a quiter)but it will be worth the struggle now to have years of health and happiness ahead of you. My husband stopped 8 years ago and he is constantly amazed at how he could ever have started smoking. He said food tastes different, the air smells different, water even has a taste that he didn't realize before. Don't let anyone tell you it is okay to fall and that you can always try again, just keep telling yourself that you are better than that. You keep telling yourself when you want a cig. that your life is worth more than the money you put out for your cig's. Because in reality, for every dollar you spend on cigarette's that is what you are valueing your life at...the cost of a pack of smokes. Aren't you worth more than the cost of a pack of smokes??? At the price of smokes today, if you put all of the money asside for each week that you don't smoke, In 6 months when you are an old pro at not smoking, I see a really nice technological gadget that you can buy yourself as a reward. Rewarding yourself is a must, so start saving those would be cig. bucks and let us know what you splurg on later.
Keep us all posted on the progress.
I am cheering for you!!

Chad I am 53 years old, and started smoking when I was 18. I am the one person in this world that thought I would never quit. I always had excuses, but last year out of the clear blue, I called the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line, and with their help and suggestions, and the patch, EUREKA!!! I quit. I have been smoke free for 1 year. My year anniversary was April 4 at 8:00 pm. I feel so good about myself, and all of my co workers and my fiance are behind me 100% You can do it Chad, if a old fogie like me can quit, young man so can you...there is nothing like it. Kudos to you for wanting to quit. If you are really ready to quit, you will...good luck!!! Beverly

I was a 3 pack a day smoker from my early teens until I was 25. I quit cold turkey and it worked for me. I believe it worked for me because I wanted to quit real bad and I think that is what gave me the strength to do it. I hate to be a bummer but if you don't want to quit more then anything else in the world you wont succeed. I would carry a picture of your dad in your wallet and everytime that you want to have a smoke look at the picture and remind yourself why you want to quit. Good luck quitting smoking and good luck in your marriage.

Stick with it and good luck. You can do it!

Congratulations! I quit smoking as an 8th birthday present for my twins - this past March, they turned 11 and I am still smoke-free! They kept asking me to quit and finally, I was ready. I agree 100% with you; you can only quit when you really want to. I didn't use any gums or gimmicks; I used a homemade method. You can call it "weening" I guess but I will always swear by it because it workded!! Their birthday is March 3rd, so at the beginning of March I took one day (I picked the first Saturday of the month) that first week and didn't smoke any cigarettes; the rest of the week, I smoked just like normal. The next week; I didn't smoke on Saturday and Sunday but smoked normally the other 5 days. The third week, I didn't smoke Saturday through Monday; and smoked as usual the other 4 days. I repeated this pattern until I was out of days on which I could smoke!! By the time I hit 6 days of not smoking and 1 day I could smoke, my body didn't want as many as usual. I haven't smoked since. I read your story and I know you said you tried weening yourself but if you haven't tried this method; please do!! I hope it works as well for you as it did for me! Good luck and don't give up hope or give in!! It's so worth it to be free of that awful habit!

Congrats and Best of Luck to you. I have been smoke free for 19months and 23 days. It is truly a wonderful feeling. I quit cold turkey because I promised my kids I would quit. They made me promise becuase they know I "Never" go back on my word. We set a quit date about 6 months in advance of my quitting and at about 30 days out from that I just started mentally preparing myself for the inevitable. When that day came I was totally ready to quit. The hardest part was my father passing away 6 mos after I quit and not going out and buying a pack of cigaretts. What kept me from smoking was the Promise I made to my kids. They had to deal with an irrateable mom for about a week but we all lived thru it. I'm not going to tell you it is easy espically since I am the mom of 13yo twin girls and that is enough to make anyone want to smoke or drink for that matter!!! You just have to have a good support network and people you can call when you want to smoke so they can talk you out of it. And they are absolutely correct that things start to taste and smell better. I wish you all of the luck and feel free to e-mial me if you need to.
Best of Luck

I have been smoke free since 10/7/97 after smoking since I was 15. On an average day anywhere between 1 1/2 to 2 packs. It took me 3 attempts before I quit for good and will never put smoke in my body again.
How did I quit. Not feeling well I thought I was having a heart attack so I drove myself to the hospital and I figured that if I was dying I would enjoy my last cigarette on the way there. Fortunatly it was not a heart attack, but I was kept over night for observation and stress test the next day. My daughter (then age 3) walked in to my hospital room crying and I decided right then that I wanted to live to see her grow up.
You must really want to quit as it is a mind game and you can make every excuse but you must have the will to do so.
4 years ago I lost 65 pounds through eating right and extensive exercising. It is a commitment that I have made to myself and today I am healthier at age 51 than I was at age 18.
Just do it one day at a time and don't let your mind tell you that you can't do it, YOU CAN.

Hey all. I have been a friend of Chads for about 12 years and I know this is something he has wanted to do for a very long time. I smoke too and we always talk about wanting to quit but nothing we ever talked about works. However I have talked with him about what he is doing now and I really believe he can do this. He has the support staff he needs and if I know one thing about him it's that if he says he will do something he will. He hates to make a promise to himself or others and then have to back out of it for whatever reason. I'm here to support ya buddy and I'll check in on ya from time to time to make sure you get your 30 mins of walking in a day. I'm going to try to quit with ya, not sure if I'm ready today but I'll do my best. I'm here if you need any help!!!!!!

Good Morning everyone!
I had a good day yesterday. No real big cravings. Some small ones but nothing I couldn't handle. The patch is working great along with the pill. When I got home yesterday I took my lab out for a 40 minute walk. I felt great afterwards. Your stories are helping me through this. Everytime I had a craving yesterday I logged on and read your stories. They kept me on track. You are all my quit smoking buddies and my support. Thank you! I also wanted to mention that one of you said you had your last cigarette on January 28, 2008, that's my birthday. So Congrats to all of you for deciding to quit. Don't give up! We will do this together. Have a wonderful day and I will talk to you all again very soon. Remember to watch the Good Company show today, from 10am to 11am, on WKYC channel 3. I will be giving an update on my progress. I will continue to give updates on the show throughout the next couple months. So tune in and lets get through this together.

Good luck to you. As a smoker for 20-plus years, quitting was one of the hardest things I've ever done. However as a husband and father of three young girls, I knew I had to do it. The best advice I can offer is to change the routines of which smoking was a part. If smoking was part of your morning routine, your commute to or from work, or your after work/evening activities change them. By developing new habits, you can dump the old ones - it takes around three weeks to develop a new pattern. Once you do, you'll almost forget about smoking.

I took up running every morning before going to work. Initially I hated it because if you exercise and still smoke, you begin to feel like the biggest idiot on earth. I feel better than ever. I've lost 20 pounds and have more energy at 41 than I did when I was 30. While I still crave a cigarette from time to time, there's no place in my life for it.

Well it's the second day of not smoking. I feel ok cravings were a little more intense yesterday, but I just kept telling myself "I'm a non-smoker". I read your blogs again and that helped me get through. I wasn't sure about using the patch again or the pill again because they didn't work before. But, Dr. Roizen was right the combination of both the pill and the patch is working very well. The walking is great! Hopefully I will lose weight in the process too! I hope you all are doing well. Don't give up! It helps me to write to you, so keep writing to me and tell me how you are doing, it helps I promise. Stay strong and I will talk with you tomorrow.

Good Morning Everyone! I have been doing my walking which really helps. I didn't understand what walking had to do with quitting smoking but it works. Yesterday was a tough day. It was my first day back to class where my classmates and I would smoke during breaks. I went out with them but I did NOT have a cigarette. I won't lie, I wanted one, but I stayed true to our quest and fought through it. I am proud of myself. It has been 72 hours now and it is getting easier everyday. I don't crave cigarettes as much any more. I am finding that I just crave them when I am in my old heavy smoking situations, like last night at class. Things are smelling so much better, I have more energy, I am sleeping better, and I am not out of breath from just walking up the stairs. So there are great benefits to quitting that far out way the benefits of smoking. Keep up the good work everyone! We can do this. Dr. Roizen said that if I can get to Friday April 11, one week, then I will be over the hump. So push hard until Friday. We can do it! I really feel it is only going to get easier. Best wishes for a great day! I will talk to you tomorrow.

Good Morning!

I just wanted to say keep up the great work! You are a nonsmoker and, because of that, you will be around to enjoy your life and be there for your future children. My mother was a smoker and she died at age 47 from complications due to diabetes. However, the doctor who performed her autopsy said that her lungs were those of an 80 year old woman due to the damage smoking caused. I was only 20 when she died and I am speaking for your future children when I say please do anything you can to make sure that you are there at their weddings and when your grandchildren are born because they will need you. Best wishes on your journey towards health!

I too started smoking roughly a pack a day at the age of 19 after I constantly told my older sister that it was disgusting. Why, I'll never know, but I smoked for 10 years until I decided enough was enough and quit in November of 2004. I have been smoke free ever since. I did it cold turkey and although it wasn't easy, I learned it was as simple as breaking my routines- lighting up after dinner, lighting up the minute I got into the car or lighting up when I was having a drink. Day after day, week after week got easier and easier. Not everyone has the will power to do it this way, but it can be done! You just need to be in that mind set and REALLY want it. Good luck!

Good Friday everyone!

I just wanted to say I'm proud of all of you that have stuck with it. We have made it past the bad part now. Now it is just the mental part of telling ourselves that we are non-smokers and we don't need or want it.

Have a good weekend everyone!! Talk to you Monday.

Hello everyone!!

To answer the last persons question, I am not having bad mental cravings anymore. I think about it sometimes but try to change what I am doing to help get my mind on something else. I have bad cravings the first 2 weeks, but the subsided after that.

Are you taking the pill and the patch or what are you doing?

You can chew gum, eat suckers, or even chew on a straw. I know it might sound funny but take the sucker or the straw and use it when you normally would have a cigarette. If you go out side to smoke then continue to go outside but use the straw or sucker to help you get through the cravings. I promise the cravings will subside with time.

Remember anything worth doing is worth doing right. And if it is worth doing it is probably not going to easy to start, but rewarding once you see it through.

I thank all of you for your support and remember I am here to answer your questions and be someone to listen to you.

You all have a great weekend!!!
