Grocery Store Price Comparison
WKYC's Chris Tye and Carole Sullivan set out to find how much prices differ from one grocery store chain to another.
The found quite a price range depending on the item. So if you're willing to spend the extra gas money to shop around, you could save on your grocery bill.
But do you have your secrets for cutting your food bill costs? Are there certain places that always sell food items at cheaper prices than others?

We save $$ on our groceries by "stocking up" on sale items - i.e., if Maxwell House Coffee is on sale @$5.99 we purchase 4-5 cans & likewise for other non-perishable items. Why pay "full price" at a later date?? We also grow our own veggies during the Summer Months at a local Community Garden & "preserve" what we can by freezing many items for later use.
I shop at Aldi's, NOTHING can even comes close to what I'm saving there! Though I have watched their prices rise as well, still it is a great savings. I also make my own baby wipes, I like them better than the store bought ones. I also am starting to use half the meat in recipes. I also only fill my tank up with ten gallons worth, I make my errands last on ten gallons, if I run low, I change my schedule.
The cheapest store to buy groceries at, although depending on your needs is sometimes limited, is Aldi! Many of their products are actually name brand items-just packaged with a different label! I couldn't survive without that store, and the food quality is just as good. I buy the bulk of my food there, then Marc's, and whatever I can't get at those two stores I go to Giant Eagle for. I alternate stores every week or so, buying enough of an item at one store to last about a month.
Every store has weekly specials and I purchase those items then if I know that I will use it. Buy one get one free and so forth.
When I shop I also take into consideration the cleanliness of the store and the dates on the products. What good is a discount item if it goes bad in one day.
For fresh produce, shop local markets and even the West Side market for in season food.
Lastly, consider the employees. Are they minimum wage employees with no benefits? That puts an extra toll on the community to provide services and keeps the income taxes needed to run the community down. Unfortunately it has become a race to the bottom and because we only look at the bottom line price on a gimmie item in a store, the unionized employees trying to raise a family are sometimes forced to shop at non-union stores themselves. It is up to the community to raise these standards and learn the whole picture.
What about Aldi's? When my husband lost his job, we cut down by shopping at Aldi's. The prices are great! For most items, the quality is very good. There are still items I couldn't get at Aldi's, so Marc's gets my business. On top of that, my daughter works at Marc's, so she shops for me and gets her employee discount. Every little bit helps. I stopped shopping at Giant Eagle and my food budget goes much further now.
Definitely shop at Aldi's you can save. A great place for cleaning products, paper products, trash bags and lunch bags is dollar general.
