Eyes of the Intern
Saturday, May 17, 2008 11:06 a.m.
Hi! My name is Lauren Yelichek, and I'm a Kent State student interning at Cleveland's WKYC News Channel 3. Today is just my 2nd day at the station. My first day was Wednesday, May 14th. I worked an 8 hour shift from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was a pretty exciting day. I just finished my junior year at KSU. I'm a broadcast journalism major, and have never interned anywhere before. Here's a breakdown of my first day:
I left Kent at 7:30 a.m. to make sure I made it to my first day on time-- I'm not used to Cleveland traffic, and didn't know what to expect. I arrived around 8:40 a.m. and waited to meet with the internship coordinator, Janet Christopher. She gave me a key and showed me around the station. I didn't realize how big the building actually was until she gave me my tour. The walls in the hallway are decorated with colorful paintings that give the building a little bit of a homey feel. As she accompanied me down the hall, we passed the control rooms. As we quickly walked, I looked through the glass into the control rooms at the blinking lights on the switch boards. I caught glimpse of the televisions covering the walls and the producers and directors talking on their headsets.
As we passed these rooms, she guided me into the crazy news room. I just saw people pacing throughout the room. Some were walking across the news room carrying their morning coffee, others were chatting with co-workers and some were getting ready for a morning meeting. It was a very busy room. As I looked around, I saw familiar faces that I remember watching on the news while I was growing up. I walked through an isle of computers passing a table with several boxes of chocolate, rainbow-bow colored and icing filled doughnuts. Yum! Janet walked me to the assignment desk where I met the helpful some helpful ladies. I stuck by Michelle most of the day. She walked me through the news room to everyone's computer desk to introduce myself. Everyone was really nice. Then she showed me my responsibilities at the news assignment desk. These consist of answering the phones and transfering callers to reporters, etc. Just when I started to settle in my seat at the assignment desk, I was encouraged into one of the many morning staff meetings. I sat in at the table with everyone in the conference room and listened to the story pitches. We went around the table and everyone pitched their story ideas as a producer wrote them on the dry erase board at the front of the room.
Throughout the rest of the day I talked with particular people about helping them with things throughout my 9-10 weeks at the station. And before I knew it... it was 5 p.m. It was time to drive back to Kent through that lovely evening Cleveland traffic. That was one of the best parts of the day (said with a lot of sarcasm). It only took me about 30 extra minutes to get home :) I was back at Kent around 6:45 p.m. That's okay. It was a great first day, and I was really excited to head back on Saturday.
Onto my 2nd Day:
I arrived at WKYC around 8:45 a.m. -- There's definitely been a change in the atmosphere since Wednesday. It is much more laid back today. I'm wearing nice black dress pants and a nice top, and everyone else (who isn't on-air) is in jeans and more casual dress. I can count the number of people in the news room on two hands. I started the day off in the control room with Matt and Caitlin. I helped with the Weekend Morning Show with Kim Wheeler and Jeff Maynor. Matt is the director of the show (he started this blog), and Caitlin is the producer of the show. During the show, I helped take videos on a little digital camera for the blog. I helped greet the guests for the show today and take them into the studio. Matt showed me how to upload video to the server and put it on the blog. And now, here I am telling you all how my first couple days are going as the new intern! So far, so good! The more comfortable I get in the station, the more I'll be doing, and the more I'll be doing, the more I'll be telling you about on here! Wish me luck!
