Eyes of the Intern

Good afternoon everyone! My name is Kate and I am another summer intern here at WKYC. This is day four of my internship and my first weekend day. So far, the internship is going great and I am already learning a lot. Everyone here is very friendly and have made me feel very comfortable.

Last week, I was able to travel into the field with Education Reporter, Kim Wheeler. It is very interesting to see the entire process of covering a story. We went to Strongville High School and interviewed a student who was able to prove goldfish communicate. It's such a fascinating feat for someone so young!

I appeared on the morning show last week as a "model" for Maureen Kyle's segment "Trendy Tuesday". Maureen had a professional makeup artist in the studio giving tips on how to get a flawless look at home. Talk about an EARLY morning. I got a little taste of what it is like to be a part of a morning show (even though I arrived several hours after the producers, anchors and reporters--and I got here at 4:45 a.m.). I will say that I was very thankful for the coffee that was brewing in the newsroom!

Today, I was able to sit in the control room during the Weekend Morning Show and watch Dawn, Matt and Caitlin at work. You would not believe how much stuff is going on at one time. There are about ten television screens in the room that each have something different on them. The switcher, which controls what you are seeing on your television screen at home, has what looks like a hundred or more buttons on it. Dawn, Matt and Caitlin are also constantly talking throughout the broadcast about what graphic needs to be on the screen, how much time is left until the next commercial, what camera the anchor will be appearing on and the list goes on. I now have a greater appreciation for the amount of work that is required from people behind the scenes, that are responsible for creating each and every newscast. It is not an easy job!

Well I hope you all have a great Memorial Day!

Kate
