Bookworm Buzz!

It's Bookworm Buzz time, and our theme is Thanksgiving.

First, Reeve Lindbergh's book is titled: "In Every Tiny Grain Of Sand". It is about giving thanks...For the day, for the night and your home... Each wection aas a different illustrator. The selections are from a variety of authors, cultures, and religions.

Next is a funny book about Thanksgiving..."Thelonius Turkey Lives!" By Lynn Rowe Reed. Every Thanksgiving, a turkey disappears from Felicia Ferguson's farm. And this year, Thelonius Turkey is the only turkey left. So with only a week to go before Thanksgiving, Thelonius won't sit around waiting to be stuffed and roasted...all the animals decided to protect him from the table. And it has a happy ending.

You can find these books on my blog "Kim's Classroom Notes".

A Raisin in the Sun: A Tradition Continues

It's become a tradition. If the performance is age appropriate, I usually take my 9-year-old son with me on media nights at the Cleveland Playhouse. As a child growing up in Smithville, coming to the big city of Cleveland to see a show was a special treat for me. I'm grateful that I am able to take my boys much more often to experience the culture that Cleveland offers.

Last season, we saw "Sherlock Holmes" and "A Christmas Story" at the Cleveland Playhouse. My son, Terry, loved them.

Wednesday, we saw "A Raisin in the Sun" together. It was wonderful. There are so many lessons to be learned from the play. As the Youngers, struggle with what to do with $10,000 and racism, they finally arrive at the conclusion that their love as a family trumps it all.

For other parents thinking of taking their children, there are some mature themes and language. But it has a purpose. My son liked the performance so much, he wants to get the book at the library! That makes keeping him out until 11pm worth it, even with a science test the next day. Mrs. Hirsch, if you are reading this, we did study the day before!

My son particularly liked seeing the young actor who played Travis Younger. Aric Generette Floyd is a 7th grader at Hawken School. He added so much spark and had a smile that lit up the theater.

The plays is set in the 1950's but still relevant today.

All the best, Kim

"A Raisin in the Sun" runs through November 30th.

Backstage with Jeff Maynor--Les Paul Tribute

What a music weekend in Cleveland!

It's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Annual American Music Masters Tribute, this year honoring legendary guitar inventor and player Les Paul.

Saturday at Case Western Reserve University musicians, writers and academics will be discussing the extraordinary career of Les Paul. The day also includes a guitar clinic and discussion with Les Paul himself.

Les Paul is one of the inventors of the solid-body electric guitar, and for over 50 years the Gibson Les Paul guitar has been standard-issue for guitar players.

The Saturday night tribute concert at the State Theater is sold out. It will feature performances by leading guitar players Richie Sambora, Slash, Duane Eddy, James Burton, and many more.

Duane Eddy, 1994 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was a live guest on Channel 3's Weekend Morning News Saturday.

He told he he grew up idolizing Les Paul, who had his peak recording success in the early-to-mid fifties, pre-rock and roll.

Eddy has played several electric guitars over his career. He currently plays his own Duane Eddy Signature Gibson model.

Longtime viewers may remember one of my country favorites, singer-songwriter Dale Watson. Dale has a Duane Eddy autograph across the front of one of his guitars. I asked Duane if he remembers Dale and he said, "Sure do. Saw him perform at a wedding. He's great. Reminds me of myself when I was starting out."

More on the Les Paul Tribute Concert to follow.

UPDATE: West Side Story on the East Side!

I was moved to tears and amazed at how much poise kids from elementary school to high school can have at their young age! I went to see West Side Story Thursday night at Cleveland Heights High School, and loved it. My son Terry Pitak was performing with one of the elementary school choirs, they are the "mini-jets and sharks." Of course, I was a proud mom and that had something to do with all the tears.

But watching these talented young men and women perform such an important story for every generation was very moving for me. The message of working out our differences and how much we really have in common no matter our background--is one that is so important.

You still have time to check it out today (Sunday) at 4pm at Cleveland Heights High School at 13263 Cedar Roard. If you're like me take extra tissues!
